Dicaprio third man?

10.23.2009

Is it time for a Leonardo Dicaprio/ Tobey Maguire team up? Well, besides that time they were on the television show, PARENTHOOD. Maybe.

It's being said that the two leading men will star in a remake of the 1949 classic THE THIRD MAN.

For those not familiar with the movie, here's a plot summary: After arriving in post-WWII Vienna, Holly Martins learns that his friend Harry Lime, who invited him, was involved in a strange car accident. Martin starts to investigate his friend's death by talking to friends and associates to find out what really happened. On this journey, he finds out more than he bargained for.

Apparently, the remake is being written by Steven Knight (EASTERN PROMISES) and will be released by Studio Canal. The film is about to go out for bidding, and it's going to be rather heated, despite the fact that no director is attached yet.

There's no word yet on who will be which character, but one of them gets to fill the shoes of Orson Welles who played Harry Lime. I'm pretty sure DiCaprio got that role, but I've been fooled before. This could turn out to be a great remake but who should direct it? Or should it be remade at all?

Extra Tidbit: If you haven't seen the movie yet, check out the trailer.

At first, I was like: "Alright, that might work." And then I realized that I had misread this as "The Thin Man". I was very confused as to who should play Nick and who should play Nora.

All you had to do was make a connection to Eastern Promises and wham, im on board. this is going to be a kick ass movie. we'll see if tobey can stand toe to toe with leo, since leo has really proven to be one of the best actors while tobey has made films like spiderman 3.

DiCaprio and Maguire also teamed up for...

... "Don's Plum", a low-budget b&w indie made when they were young. It's not great, although DiCaprio plays an excellent jerk, and it's nice to see Jenna from Rilo Kiley acting as an adult, and there's a fun bit with Ethan Suplee begging for money. Maguire and DiCaprio sued to make sure it never got released in North America.. You could get the DVD in Australia for a while.

As for the remake idea, I'm not bothered. The great, great original will always be there, so if someone else wants to

If anything I'd say Maguire did this already with "The Good German", itself another mystery about postwar anxieties in a divided city. Unfortunately, that one wasn't so good, more a film about 1940's mystery than a 1940's mystery flick.

I couldn't agree with you more, MrPhox. This is a HORRIBLE idea. Why don't they remake "Citizen Kane" while they're at it.

Absolutely not!

No no no.

You don't remake The Third Man. You don't. It was shot in black and white film in the 40's and that's the look that needs to stay. I don't want my Vienna chase scene through underground tunnels done in blue and gray with bad police drama music.

Leave me my Orson Welles and my zither-filled Anton Karas score.

why?

Look, The Third Man is a classic. You don't need a remake. It would obviously be Dicaprio as Lime, because there is no way that Tobey could fill Orson Welles' shoes. I have doubts that Dicaprio could as well.

The Third Man is a classic on the same level as Citizen Kane. If you say you never heard of it, your opinion on this site will never have any credibility again.

Its a movie-related Halloween costume, and we're on a movie website. I thought it could make a good avatar you know. And Im only talking movie credibility, if you've never heard of The Third Man, you might as well never have heard of movies.

yeah, i always see you taking heat from people here. A lot of them need it but it's like trying to sweep the sand into the ocean. you see people jumping up and down for shit like the Expendables, diablo Cody and even Michael Bay films while bashing Tarrantino and "elitist art house film"... and my heart weeps for cinema.

That said, at leas t "Hip Hop Legend" (Big Daddy Kane, is that you???) is interested in seeing the original after reading this article.

Wow, let's all be dicks about it. Some people on the site are younger or just getting into film. Relax. If you are looking to discuss film with schmoes who love cinema, the forums is a good place to start. The strike backs are where a lot of casual readers add their input. But for now, get over yourself.

Well why not be a dick about it ?! Being young or just getting into film isnt necessarily an excuse. My students are young and just getting into cinema and none of them claim Transformers on their top movies of the year. But in the end I dont really care, they can like whatever they want, I just got too much time to lose and like to break their fanboy heaven. Somebody has to do it, thats how they'll learn.

As much as I like the talent involved, especially DiCaprio and Knight, The Third Man is an untouchable classic, like Citizen Kane. You just dont touch it. But since we're talking about the possible remake, well here's my top 5 choice to direct it:

- Curtis Hanson
- Stephen Frears
- Peter Weir
- Roman Polanski (I know he's not available at the moment)
- Sam Mendes

I agree with Hanson. He did a good job with L.A. Confidential, I think he could do good with this. Lets hope it never happens though.

Of course it shouldn't be remade...

But since Hollywood loves remaking movies that don't need remade, all we can do is not see them and watch the originals. Even with DiCaprio (and a director to be named later) it won't reach the level of the first.

But all that aside, isn't that a fucking adorable picture of those two?

I'll be that guy.

Not enough people whining about this so I needed to throw a red box up here.

The original was just so damned good, and especially great because it took place in post-war Vienna, and was actually filmed in post-war Vienna. Unless they update the story, do you think a modern American audience will really care? And that final chase through the sewer...60 years later how could a new version be anything but cliche?

It doesn't even seem like this would make enough money to warrant a remake

It doesn't even seem like this would make enough money to warrant a remake (although that should never be a basis for a remake in the first place.) It seems strange, but this is the most disappointing remake news I can ever remember hearing.

I like both DiCaprio and Maguire. And if they were still doing that series where actors re-enact their favorite movie scenes I could totally see these two. Steven Knight wrote two terrific movies. Too bad the 1949 movie had Graham Greene writing the script, else I'd think Knight perfect for it. But...

But for those of us who have the nerve to call ourselves true movie fans have or will seek it out at least once in our lives. And with good reason, because as far as '40s suspense thrilles go, it's hard to find a more iconic movie villain than Orson Welles' Harry Lime.

Mr. Martin Scorcese. I can imagine Leo saying, "Hey why don't we get my buddy Scorcese to direct it. He's pretty good." And he's be right. Scorcese is pretty good. :)

Is this unnecessary? Of course. Does it still have the potential to be good? Yes.

If someone has to fill in for Orson Welles, I think DiCaprio's about perfect. They've got a solid cast thus far and an awesome writer, now they just need a great director...

Director Ideas:
1. Frank Darabont
2. Gary Ross
3. Billy Ray
4. Kevin MacDonald
5. Brad Anderson

Sigh

Common sense tells me that if you're going to remake a movie, why not remake one that could have been better? The Third Man is fine as it is. Let's get to work on making a better version of Killer Klowns from Outer Space....not that it doesn't kick a sizeable amount of ass as it is....really I just want them to go in and change the line: "It looks like something from Klowns R Us". *Shudder*

The original is one of my favorite movies. I think Maguire is bad casting, and actually Leo seems weird too but I really like DiCaprio so I guess I'm excited for this. As long as they don't modernize it I'm cool.

I don't think I even need to whine about this remake. Someone else will surely take that role. The original is a really sick flick.
