Did Drew Pearce confirm Joss Whedon as the director for The Avengers 3?

02.25.2014

Many assume Joss Whedon will be back to direct THE AVENGERS 3, but there's no guarantee he will return for another film with the superhero team. There's a very good chance Whedon will helm THE AVENGERS 3, however as far as we know, he hasn't signed a deal for a third film yet.

But screenwriter Drew Pearce seems to think Joss Whedon is already a lock to direct THE AVENGERS 3. In an interview with Movies.com, Pearce was asked if the new One-Shot "All Hail the King" will have any impact on Marvel's Cinematic Universe, and while he couldn't reveal too many details, he may have accidently confirmed Joss Whedon for THE AVENGERS 3.

"Honestly, it's a question above my pay grade. One of the things when you're a writer or director in the Marvel universe is you come in, you leave some tasty morsels dangling at the end, and maybe you're the one who comes in and picks them up again next time, or maybe it's someone else, or maybe they just hang there awhile and that's fine too. Despite any cliffhanger-ness to the short, I also don't feel like it's unsatisfying. That's all you can really hope to do. Unless you're Joss [Whedon] and you're making Avengers 2 and 3, and then you have a pretty good idea if you're making the next one or not."

Maybe, like most of us, Drew Pearce expects Joss Whedon to return for THE AVENGERS 3, and doesn't actually know if he will direct another movie. But since he's involved with Marvel's films and not just a fan saying, "Dude, of course Whedon will be back. It's The f*cking Avengers!" he probably has a litter better idea of what's going on with Marvel.

Second unit filming for THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON just started this month, and the movie won't be hitting theaters until next year. You might be thinking, "What's the rush if THE AVENGERS 3 probably won't start filming until 2016 or even 2017?" but there is a ton of planning needed when it comes to Marvel's films, and the studio will likely want Joss Whedon back for another movie.

As we all know though, things can change and directors can get bored. Maybe Joss Whedon won't even want to direct another movie after completing work on THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, but if I was a betting man, I'd put my money on Whedon returning.

Joss Whedon's THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON will be released on May 1st, 2015.

Joss did a good job with the Avengers. I think he should stick around for a few more of them.

He's definitely going to direct Avengers 3. Then after that will be done. There's no way he lets the biggest movie of the Avenger Universe get directed by someone else after all of the build to leading to it.

If someone else had to direct Avengers 3, the only director I would feel comfortable with is Jon Favreau since I think he did an amazing job with getting Iron Man off the ground and making him the most popular character out of The Avengers.

There's no way he'd pass it up, unless $2 billion dollars landed on his doorstep to do a Buffy Broadway musical.

I think Jon Favreau was a lock for Iron Man 3 but he gave up when the script wasn't coming together. I don't think that will be a problem for Josh: I think he has enough of an idea what to do for Avengers 3 that it is going to happen. He's even described Avengers 3 as "the finale" which suggests 1) he is committed to doing it and 2) he isn't planning to do Avengers 4. The question then would be who would do Avengers 4. I like Guillermo del Toro. I realize he has his own franchises with

I like Guillermo del Toro. I realize he has his own franchises with Pacific Rim and Hellboy. Oh and if they can get Guillermo del Toro for the Avengers then they could get Peter Jackson for Doctor Strange but they'd probably get either Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell or David Yates... or all three if they make a trilogy with three different directors... because they'd be cheaper. Then again, they don't have a director yet for Thor 3. Marvel might want to shell out to shell out to get Peter Jackson in the director's chair for that. Then there's the proposed Inhumans, Ms. Marvel and Black Panther movies, which could also potentially be franchises. Who would Marvel want to direct those movies? Brad Bird, Len Wiseman and Simon West come to mind. And if they wanted to do a Black Widow, Falcon or Hawkeye movie they could bring back the Russo brothers. Done.

Smart move by Favreau by jumping ship on that turd of a script for Iron Man 3. I can just imagine him reading the Mandarin Twist and thinking "No WAY am I going to film that."

I actually like Iron Man 3 better than Iron Man 2. Neither is a perfect movie and neither is a turd.

I think they need to keep it in the Marvel family

Joss can't keep directing these movies forever. I am assuming he will do 3 and thats it. But after that I expect only directors who have taken on other Marvel films to step up to the plate. Jon Favreau or Shane Black (Avengers X-mas anyone?) are my choices. But also it would be cool to see Joe Johston or Kenneth Branagh (even though his last action movie, Jack Ryan SUCKED)

If they do an Agent Carter series then Joe Johnson should be involved.

I actually did like Iron Man 3 so I wasn't the one who downvoted you for suggesting Shane Black.

If he doesn't return, they should get Jon Favreau to direct it. Look what he did for Iron Man!

Jon Favreau would make sense if and only if something drastic happened (death, coma, crippling injury) to Josh Whedon and he wasn't able to realize what he has planned for Avengers 3. Shane Black would make sense if it were an opportunity for him to introduce the Mandarin as a real villain, say for example if either Loki or Thanos were the one who gave him his rings.

If Marvel/Disney is smart,

they'll keep driving truckloads of money up to Joss Whedon's house until he says yes to another AVENGERS. I can see him moving away from directing and taking a producer's role in the future, but I doubt Marvel/Disney will want to mess with a good thing.

I'd bet that Joss will be back for Avengers 3, but possibly sharing the writing (or directing) duties with someone else - passing the torch for someone else to oversee phase 4
