Did Dwayne Johnson reveal he is the new Green Lantern three months ago?

Feb. 4, 2014by: Alex Maidy

Rumors have been bouncing around that Dwayne Johnson's mysterious DC film is in fact the role of Green Lantern John Stewart in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, JUSTICE LEAGUE, and maybe a standalone film as well. With BATMAN VS SUPERMAN pushing to 2016, rumors have escalated that all of the potential DC superheroes out there are coming together as part of Warner Bros plan to populate their DC film universe.

While Dwayne Johnson has still not revealed officially which role he is taking, did the star of G.I. JOE: RETALIATION and the FAST AND FURIOUS franchise reveal his Lantern casting months ago? Batman News dug up an old Instagram photo from Johnson. Check it out below.

Known this beast since he was 15. I was on the football field playing for Miami, he was leading the Hurricanes marching band as Drum Major. He spent years of working on my WWE story lines & Rock monologues. Then years of being on every movie set with me learning the film business from top to bottom. Today, he's one of the best and most sought after producers in Hollywood. Brilliant, relentless and one big motherf*cker! Proud of you brother & thank you for all the hard work. #ProducerHiram #TeamRock #JohnStewartCanStillWhupSupermansAss

See that hashtag? It seems a very odd and random hashtag to put on a photo right before the news that the actor would be working with DC. Still, this is not a true confirmation but it definitely keeps the train rolling in the right direction. Putting Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jeremy Irons, Amy Adams, Dwayne Johnson, Jesse Eisenberg, and Laurence Fishburne on the same screen and you have a star cast with enough firepower to compete with Marvel. Here's hoping we get official confirmation soon.

BATMAN VS SUPERMAN hits screens May 6, 2016.

He's kinda big for John Stewart. I mean maybe circa Southland Tales where he was looking a less improbable. But ever since Fast Five he's been pretty consistently enormous.

If it's true, this would be so awesome!!!

WB & DC has really flexed their muscle (no pun intended, or maybe) when it comes to their castings!

I love THE ROCK, big fan. But 1)He's way too big to play GREEN LANTERN. He's bigger than Cavill. It's going to look weird that GREEN LANTERN is more muscular than SUPERMAN. Also, even though THE ROCK is actually partial black, he does not look black at all. He looks more Puerto Rican than black. It's going to be really weird looking at a super buff John Stewart GREEN LANTERN who looks hispanic.

Who cares about the size. You're not going to find talented people with the exact size ratio as the comics. Given Cavill's size you'll need to get Peter Dinklage for the role of Green Lantern to match that expectation. Just accept it, be happy about it, embrace it. If this is true, it's a good move by DC.

Not the worst rumor

But I think he is too big for a Green Lantern. They are supposed to be strong in will and not necessarily in muscle and I think his body-build would be much more suited for a Black Adam, LoBo or even a Cyborg - someone incredibly well built. Because other than those characters, no one in the League should look bigger than Superman and Batman, whose power is based on physical strength - Superman is basically the embodiment of power and Batman is the peak of human abilities.

I know John

I know John Stewart is a soldier so it makes some sense but in all honesty he's still too big. He would be a fantastic LoBo in my opinion.

Listen, I have always been saying on this site that Superman could have been a midget and he still would have been as powerful because he gets his strength from the sun. But they went the other route by choosing Cavill, training him and used him as "the embodiment of strength". And no, I don't believe I'm being too nit-picky, because Dwayne Johnson, as much as I like him, is not some Oscar-caliber talent that would have been lost. There is a lot more actors that could pull of John Stewart. And

That's a nit-picking complaint. You can't expect the studios to find talented actors with correct size ratios as in the comics. The fact that Superman is the strongest man on Earth doesn't need to be shown by his size. It can be shown by his actions.

Goldilocks

Some of you guys are hilarious! This woman is too small to play Wonder Woman; this man is too big to play Green Lantern. Now we need an actor that is just right to complete the Goldilocks version of DC casting. I hope everyone can see the sarcasm. Whether he is huge or not Dwayne Johnson is a good actor and would bring a fierceness to John Stewart/Green Lantern. I like the idea and I hope it turns out true.

Why would he be physically the weakest? Everyone is trumped by Superman in terms of strength. But there's been no deciding factor that Batman is stronger than Green Lantern or GL is stronger than Flash. To look at it realistically, John Stewart was a soldier so he could be as strong as Batman. It's just being too nitpicky about it.

Yeah, and you don't think it's gonna look kind of ridiculous, that the biggest, most imposing heroe in the group, is physically the weakest. There's so many characters he could be, why would they not choose a character that shows off his greatest assets, his muscles. It just seems like a waste. Put some hair on him and he would make a great SHAZAM!

Great casting, if it's true

I'm only familiar with John Stewart/Green Lantern through JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED. But Stewart's supposed to be a former Marine, which would explain Johnson's bulk in the movies.

If they're not going to do a movie version of Lobo (let's face it: it would have to be a Hard R), they could do much, much worse than Dwayne Johnson for John Stewart. Johnson may not be the greatest actor, but he always brings his A game to every role.

He can easily slim down. I too don't understand people who think the Green Lantern shouldn't be bigger than stronger characters. They're strong because of super powers, and it has zero to do with their physical attributes.

Exactly! When watching the movie, I can comprehend that Superman is strong based on him punching through walls and mountains and shit. I don't interpret his strength based on his size.

Awesome news! He'll make a good john Stewart. To anyone saying "he's too big" to play John Stewart you guys just prove that no matter who they cast you guys have to find something to bitch about. They cast the Rock as green lantern and your response is " his chest is too big". Facepalm.

But that would be some amazing casting news if it is!! He would make for a great John Stewart and a badass looking Green Lantern. I'm all for this, mainly so I can wash that Green Lantern taste out of my mouth.

Meh.. Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner are my favs.. If they wanna go with someone other than them might as well go with Simon Baz the Latest one as imo Dwayne looks more like Baz than stewart.

out of all the casting choices DC has made till now in their DCU I haven't been excited for a single one. I don't think they can pull a Ledger all the time.

I love The Rock. He's badass, he's charming, he's competent in front of a camera. The guys got what it takes to be top tier in the next generation of action legends, but of all the DC comic book hero's and villains out there he's gonna play John Stewart? It just seems like a waste.

It's okay for John Stewart to be as big as The Rock because he's a human being. Yeah, he's bigger than Cavill's Superman, but Supes is an alien with enormous strength, so even if he's smaller than Stewart he's still 100 times stronger. Look at the Justice League animated show: GL, Superman and Batman are all roughly the same size and it didn't matter given each character's particular set of skills.

For some reason I expected Dwayne to play a role that would use his size as a example. Even so far as playing Darkseid, but I dont mind seeing him as John Stewart. I always wanted to see Common in the role, but the Rock is cool. The Big thing I'm waiting for like so many others on here is to see what The_Soloist is gonna say? Will He change his Avatar? I might change mine of he does.

I would want Reynolds back as Green Lantern since he made for a great Green Lantern and I fucking love that film and the fact that I'm a big fan of continuity. So this news does disappoint me in that aspect.

Too bad Martin Campbell's Green Lantern flopped but that movie suffered the same fate as Bryan Singer's Superman Returns. Green Lantern drags out so long until any real story telling (plot wise) kicks in. By the time we're about to get some action, it's "Action Scene. Bang. Boom. Done. Go on to the next scene". Green Lantern deserves a Man of Steel treatment - get the right amount of action and drama and keep audiences involved in storytelling.

On a side note I've noticed that a lot of people are giving soloist a hard time. I'm new to commenting but I've been a reader for years. All I can see that soloist is guilty of is loving movies too much if that's even possible. At least he's optimistic and not whining about things as trivial as chest size. Can somebody please explain the issue with him to me? I really am just curious

1) He likes movies that nobody else likes and his avatar is a constant reminder of this.

2) Some people have accused him of being gay because he goes on about Ryan Reynolds and Bradley Cooper the way straight guys go on about Scarlet Johansen and Anne Hatheway.

3) In addition to being a Smallville and Green Lantern fan. he is also a fan of the show Arrow, which is fine but then when he trashes the Amazing Spiderman and Agents of SHIELD people dismiss it as a pro-DC anti-Marvel bias.

4) When Kelly Brook had a miscarriage he asked why she continued modeling while she was pregnant. Well. a lot of women don't know they are pregnant during the first month. She obviously wasn't showing. There are probably still people downvoting every post he makes as a result of that and other insensitive comments.

You did ask.

Disappointing if true. He's one of the few actors who looks like he can kick Superman's ass so I thought he'd make a better bad guy. I guess the next question is how does he get a GL ring. Are they going to completely ignore the 2011 film?

Every single rumor of casting surrounding this film has been wrong. Batman, Wonder Woman, Lex, all of it. This rumor will continue and then they will release a name no one saw coming. So I don't believe it at all.

Now if this was a Marvel film I'd be more inclined to believe it, but DC/WB has kept their secrets way better. Who saw Affleck coming? No one. Who saw Jesse Eisenberg coming? None again. Until there is an official announcement I am done listening to rumors on the film.

Why not...
Still, I'd like the return of Hal Jordan better (yes, even with the return of Reynolds who, despite GL being a bad movie IMO, wasn't a bad Hal, on the contrary), especially with the buddy movie kind of relationship he's supposed to have with the Flash...

So Green Lantern is going to be a massive hulking man that towers over both Superman and Batman? And they are going to make him a white guy? Well, whitish, but certainly not black. There might be black in there somewhere, but it doesn't show. Maybe.

My point is that The Rock does not fit this character in any way shape or form. He acting doesn't fit, he physically doesn't fit, and he is a completely different race. Nothing works here. This is as miscast as Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. Nothing fits the role.

No idea what the point you're trying to make is!

If this is true, I'm sure Marvel are regretting not getting to him earlier. Kevin Feige said so himself that he'd love for The Rock to be a part of the Marvel clan. He literally is the #1 actor in Hollywood today. Getting him to be the Green Lantern would finally give the character the badassery he deserves on the big screen.

"The Green Lantern" was one of most disappointing and horribly executed comic book films in a while. Reynolds was ok but we definitely need something new now. Even though the film, and I say this mildly, is a GUILTY PLEASURE, the CGI suit, TERRIBLE Villains, and Horrendous script made this a terrible comeback for DC. It just was NOT quality film making at all. So if we can get something better with Dwayne Johnson, I'm definitely interested.
