Die Hard 5 gets a new director and takes McClane to Russia

Aug. 1, 2011by: Mike Sampson

What is yippie-ki-yay in Russian? Twitch is reporting that the upcoming fifth installment of the DIE HARD franchise will have John McClane going global and stopping an international terrorist in Russia. The film will reunite McClane and his son (who was noticeably absent from LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD) who are traveling to Russia and become involved in a conflict with local forces. So to recap, McClane has gone from LA to Washington, DC to New York City to all of America now to the whole world. Up next: John McClane saves the universe!

In addition to a new locale, DIE HARD 5 is also getting a new director. Back in February, it was announced that Noam Murro would be directing DIE HARD 5 but just a few weeks back, Murro opted to direct the 300 prequel XERXES instead. Now Fox has hired Irish director John Moore (MAX PAYNE) to take over the gig. UPDATE: Deadline now reports that Joe Cornish (ATTACK THE BLOCK), Justin Lin and Nicolas Winding Refn are all on the shortlist with Moore who has yet to get the gig. Who's your favorite choice?

Moore is no stranger to Fox, having directed only four films (PAYNE, THE OMEN, FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX and BEHIND ENEMY LINES) all for the studio, but hasn't directed a film in three years. Willis just wrapped MOONRISE KINGDOM for Wes Anderson and is currently filming indie drama FIRE WITH FIRE. No word yet on when DIE HARD 5 will begin filming.

Don't you love how these "short lists" always seem to include one genuinely talented director who you know will never be given the job?

The Die Hard franchise should have ended with DH3. This being said, I kinda like the idea of McClane in a foreign country, unable to speak the language, riding a snowbike accross Siberia, swearing along the way and shooting bad guys. McClane in the snow works, as DH2 demonstrated. I'd like to see this as long as they make it less silly and over-the-top than DH4.

Bring back the hairpiece!!! Then, and only then, might I consider paying to see another Die Hard. The last movie was a piece of shit without it.

Ten years ago this would have gone direct-to-video. Now it's being made to release to theaters. More than likely it will be in 3D too. After all it has to follow the mantra, "If it's crappy, make it 3D." Especially since Die Hard 4 was such a dog.

I actually welcome a new Die Hard film. They've always been stupid fun. I didn't think the 4th one was actually part of the Die Hard canon but it was a solid action film that worked well so if we could get more of that I'd be contented. The series has been pretty inconsistant anyways...

I really would love to see a Joe Cornish directed Die Hard. That would be so weird but I don't think he could pull of the action required for it.

I used to think Moore had potential...

...after Behind Enemy Lines. It was pretty solidly directed for dumb entertainment (although the ending got waaay too over-the-top). But his follow-ups were just plain bad, and Max Payne completely missed the mark of the videogame. I couldn't quite forgive him for that, because the storyline and style of the game could have bred a really killer, dark and emotional film.

HOWEVER, Nicolas Winding Refn?! FUCK YEAH! Not only would he almost definitely deliver an R-rated return to gritty form,

HOWEVER, Nicolas Winding Refn?! FUCK YEAH! Not only would he almost definitely deliver an R-rated return to gritty form, anyone who's seen "Bronson" or the "Pusher" films knows he's an auteur, and his upcoming "Drive" (starring Ryan Gosling) is getting stellar reviews. He could be just the right guy to resurrect the franchise.

(BTW, for what it's worth: I thought Len Wiseman did a pretty superb job on the last one. Yeah, it was PG-13 and all, but it was a lot of fun and it was fast-paced and entertaining and the action scenes were framed well -- you could actually tell what the hell was going on, which is a sorely lacking trait in many modern action films. I think the hate it gets just because it's PG-13 is unfortunate, because on its own terms it's a lot better than most action movies, and I think it was a lot better than Die Hard 2.)

The clear sign of writers running out of ideas for sequels is when they team up the hero with their kid. Every movie that does it turns out to be a disappointment: Indy 4, Mummy 3, Rocky 5, Godfather 3, heck even Die Hard 4. Add to that a bad director and I've lost any hope I had for this movie.

Wow, the fifth Die Hard movie is going to Russia? Great! Because that worked sooooo wonderfully for the Police Academy movies...

On the other hand, if the series keeps going on its current trajectory, then it's only a matter of time before the following awesomeness becomes a reality:

Die Hard 5: Revenge of the Mime

The story involves the mime that McClane nearly ran over in Central Park during DHWAV and the grudge that he holds against the beat NYC cop. Along with the help of Sgt. Al Powell and Zeus, McClane must stop the Mime and his army of party clowns from destroying NYC and stealing all the aspirin needed to relieve McClane of his hangover headache.

I love the character and would love see him continue on and the plot seems interesting because it would put McClane out of his element. Hopefully they can find a better director and hopefully it'll be rated R.

Well, Behind Enemy Lines was a fun but forgetable flick and Max Payne was fucking awful. We need to move away from the direction the 4th centered on and back to the original trilogy... but no.. another international terrorist? Fuck.

Terrible choice of director. Max Payne was shit, Behind Enemy Lines was shit, the other two I don't even have to see to know they're shit. Too bad Wiseman can't come back, I'm one of the few who likes his style. Come on, he was able to make a decent PG 13 Die Hard, something I would've thought impossible. That takes skill!

Ugh seriously? This is quite possibly my favorite action franchise. The only way they can get my ass to a theater seat is if John McClain has a receding hairline, use the word "fuck" and it's derivatives at least 30 times, the shootouts and action sequences are grounded, gritty, and gory.

I dont mind this movie

This movie wont be on my most anticipated list but i enjoyed them all so far and Id rather have a new die hard movie than not have one. Maybe there could be a scene where Mclane has to shoot his son to stop a nuclear bomb going off or does he leave it and destroy everything..BANG he shoots his son in the head and the audience is stunned.

I love Die Hard

but I lost faith in this series during the 3rd one. it lost the intimacy of the first two IMO. That is what separated it from other action series in my mind. He's not running all over God's creation trying to save the world.

Let the series die. Remember that claustrophobic action film from the 80's with Bruce Willis trapped in a building with terrorists? Yeah, that was much better than any so-called "Die Hard" movie could ever be travelling to Russia, or saving the nation. This series has become a parody of itself, and it's saddening to see.

Extra Tidbit should be according to Kiefer Sutherland he said that the orginal 24 movie ideas was going to have cross over with Die Hard which was going to be called Die Hard 24/7. The plot was going to involve Mclain and Bauer teaming up to stop terrorists. Keifer said he didnt want it to happen because he feels 24 can do good on its own.

Let me guess..

Even more CGI with incredibly stupid plotline, bad references to "I'm too old for this shit" and lame "comedic" moments with the younger partner?
They used to make DH movies for adult audience back in the days, not for toddlers.

Love the character. My favorite action movie character of all time. Love all the movies as well. Don't care if it's PG-13, as long as they do two versions and release an unrated DVD like they did for LFoDH.

And he did slow mo for Max Payne because it's a part of the video game (it created bullet time). It's not like he's Zack Snyder and uses Slow mo for everything. Behind Enemy Lines was a great action movie. He's a very capable director, no different than Len Wiseman, really.

Lovely...

Does this mean with Moore`s extensive background in Action movies we`re going to see McClane doing slow motion dives while shooting and lots of shaky cam shots?!

Why can't we get a good director?

This will range from shitty to average, judging from his other movies. It will also probably be PG-13. Just fucking stop.
