Digital Smurfs!

02.19.2008
I spent at least ten years of my life sleeping with two stuffed smurfs, one of which was Smurfette. She had the stringiest yellow hair, and I used to brush it for her and kiss her on her little blue button nose. Then she vanished. I still don’t know what happened to her, but I suspect the cleaning lady. But now Smurfette is coming back to me, in the form of a CG-animated SMURF MOVIE and we’ve got your first look at it here. Below is some artwork for the film—which will be released in 2008—and you can click on it to head over to Comingsoon.net to check out some more images and a small clip.

Extra Tidbit: The Smurfs originated in 1958 as a Belgian comic strip and NBC launched "The Smurfs" in 1981, spawning 256 episodes and multiple Emmy awards.

"You know when it comes to racism, people say: " I don't care if they're black, white, purple or green"... Ooh hold on now: Purple or Green? You gotta draw the line somewhere! To hell with purple people! - Unless they're suffocating - then help 'em." - Mitch Hedberg

Oh, wait. We were talking about blue things. Nevermind.

You know if you separate the Smurfs from the 80's and recognize that they've been around since the 50's (and still quite popular in Europe), then I think it'd be pretty cool to see an update on the franchise. However, I don't know how I feel towards it being CGI... I generally HATE CGI "cartoons", so we'll see. Personally, I think it would be rad to see it done as a hybrid 2D/3D style characters (like Cel shaded) on bright, trippy real & CGI backgrounds (like Speed Racer). Maybe it's not too

You know, I always saw Alan Rickman as Gargamel. Is that cliche?

why the smurf not?

If it has Gargamel in it, I think it will be pretty smurfing cool.

I tought that the recent TMNT movie turned out pretty good and think that CGI is a good avenue for some of our favourite childhood staples.
I would prefer to see a CGI Thundercats for instance than a lame ass live action piece of crap that ruins the legacy of the original source material.
That said I hope that SPEED RACER doesn't let me down and at the end of the day I can always watch the piss funny send ups of the Smurfs on both SNL ( starring Garth Brooks ) and Robot Chicken!

just keep the theme song

If they "la la lala la laaa" they're way onto the big screen, then how could it be a failure, right?

Stop. Just stop

I can't see how a CGI movie would outdo the old cartoon by Hanna-Barbera. Or even be able to match itself to it.

This is bullshit.
