Well, folks. I know we were all looking forward to taking a trip back to Amityville this year, but I regret to inform you that we won't be visiting that famous haunted house at the end of June like we were planning to.

The long-delayed AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING, the latest installment in the official AMITYVILLE HORROR franchise (don't be fooled by those Amityville-in-name-only movies that have been flooding the market recently), had been sitting on a release date of June 30th, 2017 for a while now, but anyone who has been keeping track of this project knew not to get too hopeful about seeing the movie on that date. THE AWAKENING was filmed in 2014 and was originally intended to be released on January 2, 2015. Dimension Films has delayed it several times in the last two and a half years, and they just did it again.

Just over three weeks out from release, AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING has been pulled from the schedule. It will not be reaching theatres on June 30th. Dimension hasn't yet announced the next release date they're going to try.

Directed by Franck Khalfoun (P2, the MANIAC remake), THE AWAKENING stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bella Thorne, McKenna Grace, Cameron Monaghan, Kurtwood Smith, Taylor Spreitler, Thomas Mann, and Jennifer Morrison.

The synopsis:

Belle, her little sister, and her comatose twin brother move into a new house with their single mother Joan in order to save money to help pay for her brother’s expensive healthcare. But when strange phenomena begin to occur in the house including the miraculous recovery of her brother, Belle begins to suspect her Mother isn’t telling her everything and soon realizes they just moved into the infamous Amityville house.

I'm not sure why Dimension doesn't just dump the movie out at this point. Has delaying something for more than two and a half years ever really paid off? Paramount delayed RINGS for over a year, and we saw how that turned out – the movie was such a box office disappointment that it even got a FRIDAY THE 13TH reboot canceled.

We'll see AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING someday, I'm sure, but not this month.

This trailer was released on August 25, 2014
