Director Alan Taylor says that Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise would be inspiration for Terminator reboot

Oct. 18, 2013by:

Director Alan Taylor wants us all to know that he is only rumored (he's under personal policy to say that it's a rumor) to be directing TERMINATOR 5 so any ideas given hence forth may or may not come to fruition.

That out of the way, when the helmer of THOR: THE DARK WORLD was interviewed by /Film and Film School Rejects, there were a few interesting tidbits about where Taylor would take the rebooted franchise.

He began by talking to /Film about how the news of his involvement spread so quickly with the online community:

Funny thing was it came out really early, a reminder of what the blogosphere can do. I had one conversation, didnt tell anyone and then all of a sudden, BOOM, it was online the next day. So my agent said, You probably should know [this is gonna come up]. Its progressed a lot since then, but Im still officially going to call it a rumor.

Now when Taylor states that he's drawing inspiration from Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise, he's not saying "darker and edgier". He's actually talking about respecting the original work:

We all love the first two and I actually went back and watched them again and my respect level only went up. I think there is another famous franchise that had a wonderful beginning and then turned a little bananas.Tim Burtons first Batman is just glorious and by the time it got around to nipples on costumes and all that stuff it sort of lost its way. And for [Christopher] Nolan to come in an say I respect this material so much Im going to take it up to *here,* thats a great inspiration. I think any version, whoever is directing Terminator, would be very respectful and serve the first two and probably feel a bit more freedom by the end.

This thought was continued in the interview with Film School Rejects:

The funny thing is, those [first] two films could not be more different than each other. The first one was more of a low-budget horror movie, while the second one was more an amazingly well-produced, glossy thriller with a sci-fi concept. They were both so successful, so theres certain things you learn from them. If youre going to try and enter the franchise, you better try to come in at that level. Also, its a challenging thing, because what they have in mind is a reboot but not an entirely different way of thinking.

If Taylor does direct the new TERMINATOR, and it sounds like he's definitely put a lot of thought into it as a "rumored" contender. I believe he's on the right page when it comes to his outlook on how the next franchise should be approached.

Do you agree with Taylor? Where should the TERMINATOR go next?

Instead of a remake/reboot, I'd rather see a continuing story after Terminator: Salvation.

I'd rather see a sequel to Salvation than going back to page one and starting all over again.

Can we please get the full on war movie thats been cock teasing us for for two decades. No big name actors, no crying robots or children, just people shooting terminators.

anyone who wants to see this is missing the point of this franchise, and it's the reason why Terminator Salvation failed. save that shit for the ultra-nerds who can read the extended universe comics or watch the tv shows. keep the movies sleek, efficient and singular in spirit.

I think I'd like to see something a bit more in the vein of T1; well thought out suspense and stalking horror. I've had enough of balls-out robot battles and CGI-laden action sequences, there's plenty of movies that do that.

Why not use the original terminator for some fucking inspiration?!? This shouldn't be a reboot in the 1st place! Just keep the story going. Idk if this next terminator isn't rated R I'm done with this franchise

That's what everyone has been saying about their reboot. However, I think Alan Taylor sounds like he knows what he's talking about and he has hit the nail on the head on how different Terminator and T2: Judgement Day are from each other. I didn't mind Terminator Salvation and I think there's lots of potential in going further into the future war and maybe having several bands of soldiers who go on parallel journeys over the course of the film. A fellow schmoe suggested a "post-apocalyptic Band

A fellow schmoe suggested a "post-apocalyptic Band of Brothers" approach, and I'd be fully on board with that concept. I'm not going to write off a reboot yet, but I think the reaction to the RoboCop reboot might influence the team behind this new Terminator film at least a little, and that one doesn't look great.

The Dark Knight trilogy was essentially a remake of the four Batman movies from the eighties and nineties except without the Riddler, Mr. Freeze or Poison Ivy: instead we got Scarecrow, Ras Al Ghul and Talia Al Ghul. Rise of the Planet of the Apes and dawn of the Planet of the Apes is also covering some of the same material as the original four Apes movies. This could be interesting: we could start with the machines taking over and John Conner becoming the leader of the resistance and then

This could be interesting: we could start with the machines taking over and John Conner becoming the leader of the resistance and then have John Conner send Reese back in time to meet his mother. In fact you could have Reese be the main character in all the movies instead of John Conner. People forget that there was no John Conner in the first movie so there's no reason to have the sequels all be about him.

I gotta bite this bone here and I'm surprised no one has yet. First, I'm a batman lover, but not Nolan lover. I've thoroughly enjoyed some his films (inception is prolly the best) and he did some very good things with the franchise, but none should get an oscar nomination for best picture. In fact the holes in rises made the movie unenjoyable for me and i wondered did they not have a 3rd person read this? But to say his movies are same as the 4 before except for the villain is completely

I agree with your terminator comments, but Nolan's films only had some names of characters the same, but the characters were still way different, AS THE STORIES

So this would be a remake/reboot? Couldn't agree with doing that more. Just bc the last two sucked doesn't mean completely start over. And there were good ideas in the 4th one. This is the same with Spidey 3 - it was really uneven - but I'd rather watch Spidey 4 from him than redo it. There's just such a wide universe for this. Don't start over. Come up with a new twist for a sequel. I've gotta say, this is the worst sequel reboot in the pipeline, and for a long time for me personally.

Poor Nolan

Do you think Nolan ever imagined that the success of his fresh approach to Batman would result in a decade of copycat reboots and remakes? There were, of course, successes, but the well has run dry on properties that are appropriate for a reboot. That well is just as dry as the "new idea" well.

IMO for those wanting to see what happens after Terminator Salvation its like wanting to see what happens after Police Academy 4. You'll get all excited when you hear about the sequel and then you'll get Police Academy 5.

I've said this once. I'd rather see a sequel to Judgment Day than a sequel to Terminator Salvation. The main problem with the franchise is that the later movies didn't build up to anything. The third film should have been a disaster movie with an Empire Strikes Back feel where every crap actually hit the fan midway through the movie and focus on John Connor try to stay alive long enough to mount a resistance. The fourth movie should just be about an all out war. Instead we got a rehash of

Instead we got a rehash of Judgment Day's plot as a third movie and a very out of place fourth installment that just threw everything out the window, including common logic.

honestly i don't know what to take of this news? I mean terminator salvation was already similar to Nolan's batman trilogy and it was not that good. I had hoped that we will finally get a foreclosure on john connors long awaited destiny but now the fucking studios are going to reboot it? I hope that this reboot will in a way finish what cameron started and yet reboot it sort of like xmen first class or the upcoming days of future past will do.

Why can't they make the salvation sequel? Or another sequel/trilogy right after that?

"Its progressed a lot since then"

This probably means he is now under contract to write a script but the movie isn't greenlit yet. "Im still officially going to call it a rumor" means it isn't a rumor but he doesn't want to get his hopes up.

I suppose a reboot would be fine, but Arnold has to be involved. He is and always will be a Terminator.

No Kidding!!!

Yes, we all know you want your movie to be like the Dark Knight trilogy... how original. We have been hearing that from filmmakers trying to reboot worn out franchise's now for the last 7 years.
