Director D.J. Caruso gives an update on the Preacher adaptation

Aug. 20, 2013by: Niki Stephens

While I'm genuinely excited for most comic adaptations coming to the big screen, the one that definitely has held my top spot for some time is PREACHER. However, the damn thing can't get a good push. I completely understand. The material is a little out there not to mention at times f*cked up but is this an abnormal thing? The studio puts up the money because they think it's something they can sell a project though this is probably one they are having a harder time with.

This is why I keep jumping back to the HBO idea. Cable television gives you a little more leeway to express yourself creatively. They also tend to take on the jobs that people don't want to wager on. So until someone figures out how they can market the material (especially the ending), we will continue to get updates like this one from director D.J. Caruso:

"Im still attached to Preacher and were wrestling with Sony because I got another movie at Sony called Invertigo, which is a big action film were trying to get going this summer. So Preacher got put on the back burner, but were still involved with Preacher and hopefully well have some good news on that soon. Todd August wrote a great script. I think its one of those features that has to kind of go through the studio system if its going to be made for a certain price. So were kind of revisiting a way to approach making the movie in the right way. "

Still not sold on Caruso as the right fit for this. He did make the underrated THE SALTON SEA with Val Kilmer but PREACHER is a whole different ballgame. Plus after hearing Edgar Wright talk about the changes they wanted to make with SCOTT PILGRIM, I'm wondering if Caruso has that same integrity. If you do this, you have to be as faithful as possible or don't do it at all.

Shaky all the way around

I dont trust Caruso 100% and i dont trust any studio to do this right. Not to mention, this material deserves a fleshing out that begs for a series, but, with the nature of the material, i dont think anyone will touch it. I can see the incorrectly spelled picket signs already. Who has the balls to go the distance?

Regardless of which avenue they go with bringing Preacher to the screen, there will be creative compromises. Perhaps not so much with HBO - that will be more cutting out extra exposition from the story, but bringing it to film means changing parts of the story. I'm sorry, but you can't blame Caruso for not having the same integrity as Wright when adapting this. Scott Pilgrim's subject matter would be easier for a studio to get behind and give trust to the director with his decisions,

Scott Pilgrim's subject matter would be easier for a studio to get behind and give trust to the director with his decisions, especially since it was being aimed for a PG-13. However, with Preacher, no matter what rating they go for, PG-13 or R, there is going to be serious backlash from religious groups based on the material, for that reason studios will need to get involved to make sure the finished product gets butts in the seats and limits the number of religious groups protesting it's release.

A show not a movie

You could almost do it an issue an episode. There are a few bits where you would mash up two or three issues into in one episode but for the most part there is just too much to do this as a single movie.

Put it on HBO or AMC dammit!

With the amount of material in the comics this could easily be stretched for 6 or more seasons. With HBO bringing out True Blood and AMC The Walking Dead, it proves that TV can handle harder material. I really want to see Preacher on a screen but if it hits the big screen I think at bare minimum 2 movies would be needed, possibly a trilogy.

It honestly doesn't feel like something that would work as a safe, big studio adaptation. Far as edgy comics go, the Preacher well out-edges Kick-Ass. We shall see.

While I am annoyed at the various hang-ups going on with the movie, I am very excited by Caruso's involvement. He's got a great visual style, and even with bad scripts ('Eagle Eye') his kinetic style and visual storytelling skills rises such things above being a complete waste of time.

No offense to you but preacher is an underground classic and it's worthy of someone better.

Would love to finally see Preacher on the big or small screen, but I don't think Caruso is the right guy for the job.

Learn from other studios mistakes

Preacher is one of the best comic book series and I for one think the attachment of Sony and Caruso is a bad idea.
For one, this is a very dark and messed up series. It needs the touch of a seasoned pro or an independent studio like Lions Gate. Any major studio will dissect the crap out of it until its not even preacher
Second, I always thought preacher should go the cartoon route that hbo did with spawn. At least with animation you can get away with anything dark or messed up.

D.J. Caruso/Sony will shit on your dreams and act like you ask them too...

I have no faith in this director, or in Sony Pictures as the studio to bring "The Preacher" to life and do in any semblance of justice. I love this comic. With a hard L... and while The Salton Sea was a decent flick, it should not be the saving grace of a film directors career that has shit out countless studio dribble for the last decade. There are criminals in Movie Jail with better track records. I anxiously await the chance to eat these words and be proven wrong, but I'm not holding my

I will give Sony props for not fucking up Hellboy but I agree Caruso is not right for the material. Hopefully he'll drop it like he did Y: the last man

A solid Preacher series is something I've dreamed of for years. I just hope they don't rape the source material as that's what made it shine, (SPOILER ALERT, BUT YOU REALLY SHOULD HAVE READ THIS SERIES BY NOW) right down to the retarded offspring of Jesus.
