Director Duncan Jones to direct period action film based on 007 creator Ian Fleming

May. 21, 2012by: Paul Shirey

MOON and SOURCE CODE director Duncan Jones has announced his next project, which he's currently casting for, in the form of a biographical period action film based on the life of Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond 007.  While we all anticipated Jones taking on a big action/sci-fi franchise (a la TERMINATOR), it seems that he has his eye trained on something much different.  And, I'm all the happier for it.

From the press release:

Before Ian Fleming became the globally renowned best-selling author, his own life was no less exciting than that of the hero he created. Fleming travelled the world and masterminded real life top-secret operations, inspiring him to create James Bond. Duncan Jones’ take will explore and tie together those events in the author’s life that gave birth to Britain’s greatest superspy.

Jones has emerged as a shoe-in name for many of Hollywood's upcoming big budget projects, but hasn't taken the bait on any of them, instead opting for something that seems to inspire him.  Gee, imagine that?  The story will be based on the biography “Ian Fleming, The Man Behind James Bond” by Andrew Lycett, although I'm sure we can expect some embellishments.

“Fleming lived through one of the most perilous periods in world history, in a position that allowed him a unique vantage point of all the players, all the stakes.  He witnesses true heroism first-hand.  And he saw the evil men could do.  Then, when the war ended, he went off to write fiction. The essential question for me is; where did Ian Fleming end and Bond begin?” said Jones about the project.

It's kind of amazing how the character of Jame Bond has stayed with audiences for so long and continues to deliver top notch entertainment.  With SKYFALL, the latest Bond opus, hitting theaters this November (and judging from the trailer today, looking pretty badass) it appears that Ian Fleming's legacy will continue to deliver the goods.

This should be an interesting one.  More as this project develops.

Oh, and in case you wanted to know where James Bond got his name:

Extra Tidbit: Duncan Jones dad is none other than David Bowie. That is all.

This is great. Not sure if anyone else knew about this but back in 1990 there was a film made called "Spymaker: The Secret Life of Ian Fleming" (you can find it on IMDB and watch the entire thing on YouTube) and amazingly enough, Fleming is played by Sean Connery's son. Your mind blown yet?

I never knew Ian Fleming led such a daring life. I'd definitely be interested in seeing this film, especially with Jones helming. Both Moon and Source Code were great movies, and I have a feeling this would be better than both. Mostly, I just want to see more movies from Duncan Jones.

Am I the only one...

... who thinks Fleming looks a bit like Geoffrey Rush?

No, and I'd even say that would be a fantastic casting choice.

An Ian Fleming biopic! I can't think of any action biopics off the cuff, so there's lots of potential to be mined there.

I'm sure he doesn't want to, but Duncan Jones should really cast his Dad in something, a supporting or bit part, seeing as how good an actor he was in The Prestige.

All fine and all that stuff

Sounds good. Hopefully it will turn out better than the misguided "Source Code".

I really enjoyed Source Code, and was one of the few who thought the ending worked. Of course, we're all entitle to our own opinions.

I really liked Source Code. It was easily in the top 10 movies of last year for me

I think "Moon" is a masterpiece, and went into "Source Code" very excited (very positive early buzz helped a lot), and found it to be meh. Good acting, but the pacing was all over the place, and the ending was terrible. Not a worthy follow-up.
