Director found! Zack Snyder will be the one to helm Superman

10.04.2010
UPDATE: Deadline spoke to Snyder directly and, after confirming General Zod as the villain, here's what he said: "I've been a big fan of the character for a long time, he's definitely the king of all superheroes, he's the one. It's early yet, but I can tell you that what David (Goyer) and Chris (Nolan) have done with the story so far definitely has given me a great insight into a way to make him feel modern. I've always felt he was kind of awesome. I'll finish 'Sucker Punch' and get right at it."

The search is now over!

After all the names thrown in the pot, it looks like Nolan and company have decided that this is a job for Zack Snyder.

Well, there you have it ladies and gentlemen. Snyder beat out Tony Scott (MAN ON FIRE), Matt Reeves (LET ME IN), Jonathan Liebesman (BATTLE: LOS ANGELES), Duncan Jones (MOON), and if the rumors were true, Darren Aronofsky (BLACK SWAN). I think some of us might have been rooting secretly for underdog Duncan Jones, but I'm guessing they wanted a bigger name and someone with more experience.

This is not to say that Snyder is a bad choice. Bringing his style to the world of Supes could be very f*cking cool. I believe in Nolan and trust his judgment. Also, Snyder's upcoming SUCKER PUNCH looks like the ultimate cinematic wet dream. Nothing is better than kick ass visuals and hot young women with weapons.

Alright, time for me to stop typing and time for you to weigh in. Are you guys on board with this choice?

Extra Tidbit: Now the bigger question...who will be the Man of Steel?

Yes!

The pairing of Nolan and Snyder can't possibly fail. I thought it was impossible to have a better Superman movie than Donner's masterpiece, but I think this is it! Terence Stamp was great as Zod so I hope they could cast someone as menacing as him. And of course Ron Perlman as Darkseid!

If he brings his amazing visual style to something as classic as Superman, this one could be a winner. I have a feeling that they may put an actor who isn't well known in the role, as they often do in superhero movies these days. I had no idea who Routh was before Superman!

You will believe a man can fly... in SLOOOOOW [link]
Seriously though, all jokes aside, I'm totally cool with this choice. Think what you will of his movies story-wise, but there's no denying that he's an extremely visual director. His set design, the fight choreography, the costuming, etc. it's all fantastic. You can't TELL me the thought of Snyder's vision of Metropolis isn't enough to get you stoked. If Nolan sees something in him, I'm in. All Snyder needs is a solid script to work with and

P.S. I was hoping for Braniac or Metallo, but, oh well. Keep Lex a background character. And let's let Brandon Routh have another crack at it. I'm sure he could do it properly now that there's no Singer to tell him to ape Christopher Reeve.

Yeah, fine. Good. But...

Keep Routh. He made a very good man of steel. The failure of the last film was not his, and he deserves another shot.

Routh for CK!!!

I've really enjoyed ZS's films so far, and am really excited for Sucker Punch. This could be good..
I believe in Christopher Nolan!!!
& I know Zod is not everyone's choice for a villain to revisit, but just look at what Nolan did for The Joker.. Have faith people...

I'm on board for this. I loved Watchmen, 300 & can't wait to see Sucker Punch. But come on, not ZOD (or Luther for that matter). Braniac opens up sooo many possibilities. And save Darkseid for the JLA movie.

I like everything Snyder has done so far, and having met him once, he seems like a passionate guy... So YEAH ! Bring in Snyder's Big Blue. As of Zod as the villain, if it's the storyline of the phantom zone's villains invading earth, that could be EPIC !

Bizaro

I love Snyder as the director. This could be really cool. The only thing that I'm not hip to is have Zod as the main villian. Brainica, Doomsday, Darkseed are all good ideas, but what about Bizaro Superman. Now that would be cool!

How soon some people forget Snyder gave us two superior movies in the last ten years.. Watchmen and 300. Hell even Dawn of the Dead was a good time. With a Nolan script Zack will hit this one out of the park!

General Zod?

Maybe I'm missing something but where in this article or the linked Deadline one does Snyder confirm, or hell even mention, General Zod being in the film, besides being main villain...? Even on the mtv splashpage in their interview he refuses to talk about villains... Surely if it's too soon to tell us who Batman is going up against which is obviously at least partially cast, the thus far empty cast list and zero information on the new Supes would make releasing the villain this early a bit

I mean I may have missed it and if so feel free to provide the link... but as it stands I'm taking this with a pinch (or bucket) of salt!

Snyder Can Do No Wrong!

300,WATCHMEN,DAWN OF THE DEAD and SUCKER PUNCH...notice I didnt mention the owl movie...were all very amazing films visually.I dont mention the owl movie for the simple fact that I have yet to see it...Looks like a visual treat.
Snyder has tackled a graphic novel so a comic book show be right up his alley.I knew Bryan Singers torch would be extinguished soon.Too bad hes still at it...I must say Valkyrie wasnt to bad!
Now the real question is.....who to cast as the Man Of Steel?

Great choice on director. Visually he is a perfect fit, and I haven't watched a Zack Snyder movie I haven't enjoyed. To be fair I haven't seen the Owl one but Sucker Punch looks sick. With Nolan keeping an eye on character I think this is shaping up real good.

But come on, Zod? Really? Boring choice of villain, but at least he's super powered.

I like Snyder and hate Superman. I think that doing another Superman movie is a waste of time, He's a stale and boring character that Snyder shouldn't be wasting his time on.

Aww Crap.

I really wanted a great Superman movie.

This is terrible news to me. Snyder is not a director that I like. I think he butchered The Watchmen and 300 is one of my least favourite movies.

It bothers me that I won't be able to enjoy this. All I can hope is that he does something right for once. Gawd this is a bad, bad, idea.

Well.

Come on, guys - Superman is the job of a lifetime for Snyder and I'm sure he'll do his best work yet.
Personally, I may have picked someone else based on just having their films to watch but with the multitude of meetings and discussions they must have had there would have been a consensus for a reason.
C'mon Zack, prove these "oh great, slow mo" assholes wrong.

Like Night & Day

Nolan & Snyder are like Night & Day in their styles, just like Bats & Supes. Funny that. Anyways, this will have a healthy budget, as WB quite trusts Snyder.

Not good

From everything I've seen about the dude's personal life, I think Snyder is a really cool guy, but come on. He's a bad director. His hyper-stylization hasn't worked yet in anything he's tried and it most definitely won't work with what Superman is or needs to be.

Watchmen should have been one of the biggest hits of our generation, but it wasn't. It was actually one shy step above being a box-office disaster. Why do we think that is, hmm? We obviously can't blame the source material. It's

Watchmen should have been one of the biggest hits of our generation, but it wasn't. It was actually one shy step above being a box-office disaster. Why do we think that is, hmm? We obviously can't blame the source material. It's because it looked like it was directed by a 12 year old who loved comics and had never seen a naked woman before. It was received so poorly that his next project was... the owl movie?! wtf?

Why are we trusting him with this? Nolan, Warner Bros, I'm disappointed in you both.

Sorry to bust your bubble Dude but WATCHMEN would never be a massive blockbuster because it's to complex for general audiences. It's a fanboy movie for comic lovers. It has no major icons like Spiderman or Batman in it and it's not a very action oriented plot, it's a cerebral superhero movie and the general audience wants movies like Spiderman or Transformers that are just about specticle with corny jokes inbetween action set pieces.

I agree with Nite Owl, there is no way you could stick to the source material like Snyder did and Watchmen be a huge hit. He made an awesome movie out of material very difficult to portray on screen. The expectations were really high for all watchmen fans and i think he did a pretty damn good job of meeting them.

Also personally i think he may not be the best guy for superman but to say he is a bad director is just ignorance.

Sorry guys...

I'm going to red this comment. And for it I will get like 5000000 thumbs down.
I just wanted a different director... Snyder's movies have been too dark for Superman. Superman needs a bright movie with 90% of the stuff happening in the day. So I was really hoping for someone else that would be able to do that. But there's still a chance that he might do good.

P.S. Is anyone really looking forward to how they handle the "realistic" version of Clark Kent taking off his glasses and suddenly

I´m sure Snyder can adapt to the tone and feel of the Superman-franchise. I´m more worried about Nolan´s script and overall direction, he´s not known for light entertainment as well.

Snyder was a good choice, but as far as another superman movie goes...im not to excited about the movie. so many remakes and lame tv shows have been made for superman, kinda brings me back to all the Batman movies and how it took them YEARS to get it right! i HOPE this is the last remake for superman.

as much as I wanted Snyder to be the director, I didn't actually think they'd have gone with him. Awesome news! I'd have been just as excited to see Duncan Jones give it a shot, however.

I haven't seen a single bad film from Snyder yet, though, so this is very promising. Hell, I can't think of any bad movies Nolan's been involved with either so...2 perfect track records = a chance I might actually get interested in fucking Superman.

I'm kind of surprised actually. I don't know that Snyder has the right style for Superman. It's going to be a very different kind of movie than we have seen. I just pray to god he doesn't do half the film in slow-mo. It was kinda cool in The Guardians, but he needs to chill with that for this film. This is going to be a challenge.

I'm happy about this. 300 a side, I've enjoyed most of his movies and think he will bring a great visual style to the movie like he has with all of his movies, even 300, his one movie I didn't like, was still very interesting visually (didn't like the slow motion though).

Well. Of all the directors on that list, I'd say he was the best choice, although I think there might be better choices out there but I can live with Snyder. What I may have a problem with though is Zod as the villain once again. I mean, Superman has a laundry list of villains they have to work with from the comics and they just keep using the same one. Zod wasn't even his main villain in any other iteration except the movies. So why use him again. Give us something new. It's the same

It's the same problem as I have with the idea of using Khan as the villain in the next Star Trek. We've seen this guy once before and he was great. So why do it again when you have so much more to play with.

While I agree, what they're probably going for is a reboot - not a sequel. As such, they're going to want to tread SOME familiar ground as the original movies, as for most people - believe it or not - that's all they know of Superman.

Hell, I'm something of a comic dork and even I'm hard pressed to come up with Superman villians - on account that I don't read Superman due to his lameness.

The new movies supposed to explore the mythology of Krypton so the logical choice for the main villian is Zod but Brainiac would be a good choice as well. Maybe Brainiac will be in it too, who knows at this point right?

Kristen Bell as Lois

Ever since the mention of Natalie Portman as Lois Lane came up i've been pondering different choices, and it just hit me... Kristen Bell (w/ a dye job of course).

The Superman movies have been too 'normal'

A conscious effort to hold back the wilder elements of Superhero movies.

I'd love one to just let loose and go for it.

I think this is actually an inspired choice. Snyder does action. He does it well. He does visual greatness and does it well. Superman will be the big tough guy we need. Make no doubt, Superman is the Superhero we need. This movie could be one of the greats

Meh....

Snyder definitely WAS NOT my choice from that list. I wanted to see Matt Reeves take a spin at super men and alien villains. Aronofsky could have brought a more surreal, human-centered approach. I guess I'm just kind of tired of Snyders style. PROVE ME WRONG ZACK!

I like Snyder...sort of...

But I'm a little sick of his hyper-kinetic, painfully faithful comic adaptations. Duncan Jones might've been cool, though he's the least-proven. I was actually kinda hoping to see what Tony Scott could do. Though he too has an annoying aesthetic.

As for the upcoming "Sucker Punch," it all looks fine until I remember he's setting the real-world parts in the 1950s. And I can't think why you'd do that unless you wanted to pay homage to the 1950s instead of a straight-up wet-dream of the modern

My Own Unpopular Opinion

Superman is a horrible character with no appeal to me. It doesn't matter if Jesus directed the movie, it wouldn't be any good. Now, let the negatives commence.

Combination of Awesome!

Zack Snyder and Chris Nolan! Now that's what I call an awesome combo. Nolan's sense of story and character depth mixed with Snyder's uncanny sense of visual style will breathe new life into Superman. Yup, you'll truly believe a man can fly...and pop your eyes open with surreal amounts of intense eyecandy! Best piece of news in a LONG time!

Not too surprising--Snyder seemed like the most likely candidate. I couldn't see Tony Scott trying to do a movie like this at his age.

"I've always felt he was kind of awesome." Why does that statement seem just a little underwhelming?

Also--Zod again as the villain? This next film also seems fated to follow in the footsteps of Donner's original movies, just like Superman Returns. God forbid they introduce Darkseid, Metallo, Parasite, Doomsday or Brainiac into a Supes film.

I think the combination of Nolan and Snyder will be very good. Snyder will provide something very different than what we have seen before with Superman. His films have all had beautiful imagery and although the slo mo action scenes might be a bit excessive, it will still be awesome.

How is Snyder going to direct this film without a specific graphic novel to rip off every shot from. The guy has no true vision. 300 and Watchmen were carbon copies of the graphic novels except for a the ending of watchmen. The guy is boring.

As much as I technically feel this is middle-ground news, as the search for the star is on, I can't help it: I'm flippin' excited. With the Nolans behind it, and Snyder capturing it...this will be magical, epic, intelligent, and just plain great.

But. The star?

And seriously: why, why, WHY can't it be Brandon "Looks like Christopher Reeve, SOUNDS like Christopher Reeve, and might as well be the damn CLONE of Christopher Reeve, and incidentally, played a great Superman" Routh?!!!! He

He was PERFECT. And unless they pull another unknown out of the cosmos (again), I do NOT see ANYONE else even REMOTELY qualified for the role currently working. *cough*HughJackman*cough* Excuse me. But seriously...who else could do it? I hope the Nolans and Snyder are smart about this next (and perhaps most crucial) part...

Not too excited.

I like Snyder and would like to see him do another project. I guess I'm just not that interested in Superman. Watchmen is great but I wish he'd lay off the slo-mo. Too bad he cant do Dark Knight Returns based on the comic. I'm sure it will be good.

well, not a bad choice

I was rooting for Matt Reeves, but I had a feeling it would go to a bigger name. Snyder's movies are cool and all, but I just feel there's a bit of that style over substance factor, and what Superman really needs right now is substance. But, with Nolan overseeing things, maybe he can keep the digital crapola toned down and together they can create a good flick.

Hells yeah!!! I am so excited, can't believe a Christopher Nolan produced Zack Snyder directed Superman movie is in existence. Snyder is a fan just like all of us and that is who you need on this. Can't wait to see Supes do badass stuff while in slow mo. My only beef is that I heard the villain is General Zod and I would've prefered Darkseid but hey, beggars can't be choosers and Superman will definitly be punching people instead of just lifting shit for 2 1/2.

I don't know how i feel about this. I'll inevitably go see it (i'd be lying if i said i wasn't) BUT, I've already seen what Synder's brought to the table, and he's somewhat predictable. I would have ultimately liked to see Reeves helm Man O' Steel but i trust Nolan's judgement, and hopefully, with a bit of his creative input it'll turnout awesome.

This could work because he won't be a slave to the particulars of a certain graphic novel or run of the character. Being held to making such literal translations kind of stunted his directorial growth... hopefully he does a good job with this. Also, JON HAMM.

superman returns didn't need action. superman returns needed heart and tension- something at stake.
people don't just want to see action set pieces, people want a reason for superman, with all of his powers and abilities, to actually be effected by something. people need to reason to give a damn about a demi-god like superman.

this is what superman needs, not a trailer editor who calls himself a visionary.

this is what superman needs, not a trailer editor who calls himself a visionary.

Awesome choice! if the script is good, I have faith that Snyder will knock this one out of the park! bring it! NOTE: bring back Brandon Routh, he rocked that role.

I've never been a fan of Superman so I haven't been paying attention to this upcoming project. However, with Snyder at the helm, I've upgraded to 'interested'.

Wow. This is great news. It's going to be insanely epic, that's for sure! Nolan and Snyder, please, re-cast Brandon Routh, or go with Jon Hamm.

PERFECT choice! The problem with Singer's attempt was that he played it safe by making a homage, not truly taking advantage of what today's effects could bring to a Superman film. I've said it before, but we should have seen Superman rip a building out of the ground and use it as a baseball bat against a truly threatening enemy. Instead we got Superman dealing with father issues. I really think Snyder will do a great job, at least visually. Now let us pray that Goyer and Nolan nailed the script

Its going to be visually amazing, thats for sure. I hope they cast a good actor to play Superman/Clark Kent.

Though he abuses the slo-mo technique, he does know how to do action. Something that Superman Returns desperately needed. A good superman and an amazing Lex Luther with Spacey couldn't have saved that movie.

I'm not a fan of Snyder at all. He abuses the slowmo effect like no one's business and I don't think Nolan can add substance from his position of producer. The fact Spielberg was his producer did not make Michael Bay a better director. I hope I'll be proven wrong but I expect a flashy movie with bad characterization.

Best Choice on list

Time will tell if Zach can pull it off......just please NO JON HAMM......It has to be Routh or Welling with Smallville ending!

I'm not a fan of Snyder at all, I was hoping either Reeves or Jones would get it, someone talented who hasn't done this genre before.

Makes me wonder after seeing Watchmen though, will Superman rip arms of of his foes and then graphically fuck Lois Lane through the wall? Also, maybe Superman could run around through the whole film with his johnson hanging out. Then Lois can be like "So that's why they call you the man of steel:.

j/k, lol, couldn't help myself.

EXTRA TIDBIT

MATT BOMER-- from White Collar USA network fame. He was an original choice for Superman when Brian Singer was the director. Matt Bomer has proved he has the charisma and looks of Superman on his latest show.

Ladies and Gentlemen, a decision so fantastic that both Terminal_83 and The_Soloist agree on it.

So do I.

Probably the worse choice from the list of candidates. Specially because he doesn't seem to be improving as a director, we have already seen the best of him.

I can't wait for this to happen. His flicks are very easy on the eyes, I just hope the story is up to par and Luthor isn't the baddie.

I'm one of the few who really liked Superman Returns, and I will always be disappointed we never got a sequel to it. However, I am ready to embrace the reboot, and I think Snyder is more than capable for the job. I'll miss Williams' classic superman theme the most, but I hope the music is good.

Yes! Nolan produces the substance, Snyder directs the awesomeness, sounds like a great combo.

Snyder is definitely the last person I thought would direct this, I thought he'd be too busy with Xerxes, but I'm not disappointed by the decision at all. A lot of people are complaining about the slow-motion he'll probably bring to the film, but honestly it worked well in both 300 and Watchmen so I don't see an issue as long as it's used effectively. On top of that, Nolan is producing this thing with his brother writing (I hope), so there's no doubt in my mind this will be nothing but pure

Best choice for superman, now I am not worried about this "reboot" as Nolan and snyder are the 2 best directors around working today to bring life to our favorite comic book heroes on the big screen. I am sure we will have a visual threat...Now please, cast Jon Hamm! [link]

As long as he takes it easy on the slow-mo, I'm sold. I'll be honest though, I'm much more excited about this Superman project than I am in anything Marvel is serving up in the next few years.

Great Choice

So pumped Snyder got the role. He did an amazing job on Watchmen and based off what he did in that movie, Superman should be just as great. I can't wait for the visual style Synder is going to bring to this movie. This is a HUGE step in the right direction. Now all they have to do is cast Jon Hamm for Clark Kent/Superman and then you will have a GREAT Superman movie.

I'm not disappointed. This could be really very good, and--I don't say this with many directors but--I trust Nolan. This has utter potential.

I like ZS but I hope he either goes with really really great CGI(as in not noticeable), or very little CGI a la Dark Knight. This could be a beauiful thing.

well, i'm not upset about it, i know Snyder will make the exact opposite of what Singer did. I am happy knowing that Nolan will ensure it works with his Batman series ...hopefully.

Quality choice... Watchmen is amazing. The Dawn of the Dead remake was Amazing. 300 i thought was good, if not the seamen inducing experience some had. Sucker Punch looks bad ass.

But to be fair: Bryan Singer had Usual Suspects, X2: X-Men United and Apt Pupil under his belt prior to his rendition of SUperman. I still thought his version was decent, but not the end all be all that it should have been.

GREAT CHOICE

honestly, all the choices would've been great aside from Tony Scott(this doesn't seem up his alley). I think Snyder will create a badass superman flick and with the Nolan's behind it too, how can it fail?

Kind of unexpected...

But if you asked me who I'd ideally want to direct Superman, I really wouldn't be able to come up with anyone in particular. Snyder did well with Watchmen, but was held back by how reverent he was to the source, so Superman should be interesting...
