Director J.A. Bayona on building a "bigger" film with Jurassic World 2

While Colin Trevorrow's JURASSIC WORLD was a box-office success, fans of the series were very critical of the movie covering familiar territory. It looks like Spielberg and Co. are conscious of this and, in turn, are pushing the franchise in a new direction with director J.A. Bayona. Speaking of, Bayona had a few things to say about the sequel to The Playlist and I've included the highlights below!

Director J.A. Bayona on JURASSIC WORLD 2:

After doing THE IMPOSSIBLE and A MONSTER CALLS I said, ‘I want to have fun now.’ So, let’s do a dinosaur film with Spielberg. It’s great, but at the same time it’s massive and way bigger than [the last] one.

I think what is tricky about doing the fifth movie of a franchise is how will you bring in new stuff and still pay tribute to what we all know and the legacy of the film. So, it’s the balance between the new stuff and the old stuff. I think Colin did a great job in the first one finding the balance between what people are expecting and what people are being again. I was kind of surprised when he pitched me the story because it leads the story to a place that we’ve never seen before and it brings some of the most important elements from the other films and makes something with them. I thought that was very interesting. It’s the second chapter of a trilogy so it gets the story to a place that wants you leaving more and more.

There's no doubt that Bayona has proved his mettle with films like THE IMPOSSIBLE and A MONSTER CALLS, so his decision to take on JURASSIC WORLD 2 has me VERY excited. I certainly have no qualms with Trevorrow, but Bayona is a much more proficient director. If the story does indeed take the franchise to a different and compelling place, then maybe I can finally get excited about dinosaurs again!

JURASSIC WORLD 2 will open in theaters on June 22, 2018.

What's Wrong With Talking Raptors with Machine Guns?

I'm not a big Jurassic Park fan, but I am a Star Wars fan and this article reminded me that we are stuck with Colin Trevarrow for Episode IX. I dont care what happens with Jurassic World 2, but I would love to see Colin Trevarrow replaced last minute as director.

If anything JP needs to go smaller scale.

Like what happens after the park was shut down and the dinos are being killed (I mean its not like after the shit that went down in JW they would keep the park open and let the dinos live...). We don't need new dinos introduced or bigger set pieces. Bring the horror elements back. Make it a fuckin slasher movie with Raptors and T-Rex's. Not some military raptors with guns. Fuck that noise.

I don't want a "bigger" JW movie. Looking at some of my favorite action films this year, some of the action scenes may have been "bigger", but for the most part, the scope of the movies was smaller. Civil War, as huge of a movie as it was, has arguably one of the smallest Marvel plots. Deadpool was kept to a medium budget. Arrival (not an action flick but still) wasn't about aliens destroying the planet. Point is: sure, go big with some of your set pieces, but keep the film scale smaller or

Loved Jurassic World and am very much looking forward to this new entry. I just wish they could somehow get Neill, Dern, and/or Goldblum into this new film. Would love to see the old trio join in on the adventure one more time with Pratt, and Howard's characters.

In movies, bigger isn't better.

Whenever a director hyping a film uses the terms bigger, louder, or scarier it turns me off. They hide behind those terms because they know the plot of the movie sucks and they need to distract you with something.(like the last 5 fast and furious crap fests) The first jurassic park had the perfect tone and they get farther from that with each movie. In terms of plot I would like to see and expedition to the first island to recover the shaving cream canister containing dino DNA. With new

With new technology they can use the canister for whatever plot device They need to use it for. Don't make the movie for 10 year olds either.

My thoughts exactly @Sir Clyde. I always thought it would be fun to have a direct sequel to the original JP where Dodgson and a team head to the island in search of Nedry and the shaving cream canister or his money. I mean, Dodgson did hand over a large amount of money and he got nothing in return.
