Director James Mangold on Jean Grey's role in The Wolverine and a certain end-credit cameo scene

May. 30, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

There really haven't been that many details released about THE WOLVERINE. We do know that it's set in Japan, Logan is going to battle some ninjas and for at least part of the film he won't have his healing abilities. Oh, and we know Wolverine is going to take a train ride at some point. In an interview that appears in the print edition of Entertainment Weekly director James Mangold opened up and talked about certain elements of the film.

One of the things people have been wondering is how Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) will be used in the film. It's no secret that she appears in the film but is it actually her or is Jean Grey just stuck in Wolverine's head? Mangold described her role as a "shadow presence" and went on to explain how she will interact with Wolverine:

Pops up to mock, comfort and advise Logan much as Number 6 tortured Gaius Baltar on Battlestar Galactica.

It really does look like Logan is going to be mentally put through the wringer in THE WOLVERINE. Logan's mental state hasn't been explored that much in the films and it's one of the things that intrigues me the most about THE WOLVERINE.

The interviewer went on to ask James Mangold about the end-credit scene the director recently shot in Montreal featuring Patrick Stewart as Professor X that would link the film to the upcoming X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. Many people were slightly annoyed with the news about the scene since THE WOLVERINE is suppose to be a stand alone film. At first Mangold wouldn't comment on the scene but then ended up confirming it and said that while Professor X does appear at the end it has nothing to do with the plot for THE WOLVERINE:

"It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what's inside ['The Wolverine']."

I don't know if they really need the cameo to link the two films together since I'm pretty sure everyone knows Wolverine is a part of X-Men anyway and it's not like a different actor is playing Logan. Still, it'll be interesting to see how the scene is used and Wolverine's reaction to seeing Professor X again.

THE WOLVERINE will be unleashed on July 26th, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE might have been fairly shitty but the video game was actually pretty solid. The mature rating definitely helped.

The latest trailer for this movie left me more optimistic than any of the other marketing has. Cautiously optimisitc. I really won't be able to forgive them if they've turned The Silver Samurai into a robot, though.

well if not a robot and wanting to stick close to the comic how do you explain a 10 foot tall guy dressed in a very old world samurai outfit? I think that's why the robot is more of a suit he wears, only way to explain how he is that big and still follow the comic

This movie isn't really high on my must-see list of summer movies. But everything so far looks like they're getting the formula right for a Wolverine solo film, and it will be a good improvement over Origins.
That being said, the post-credits scene doesn't sound like that big of a deal. Even if it is meant to directly tie into DOFP. I get the impression the story follows a post-X3 Wolverine who has disconnected himself from the world and his fellow X-Men, so his journey is about healing his

So the post-credits scene would work well as an epilogue to that story.

This just doesn't look that good.

When Darren Aronofsky left the project, most of my optimism left as well. His original idea -- of having Hugh eat a 6,000 calorie diet and bulk up (rather than look typically lean as he does now in the final product) -- was enticing, and I thought he'd approach it in a rather dark, unique way. But now this really DOES just look like a direct [link] to the last Wolverine movie, and the trailers underwhelmed me.

God-dammit... the one movie where I want Wolverine to just be a badass he turns out to be an emotional wreck having flashbacks and being mocked by a woman. Who knew Logan was such a puss.

My guess is that the end credits scene has Xavier, his consciousness now in the body of his twin brother who was previously in a vegetative state, reintroducing himself to Logan.

Can't Wait!

I've been looking forward to the Wolverine for a long time and am glad that it's almost here. I've been enjoying all of the pictures, footage, and tidbits about the film that we have gotten so far and it just gets me even more excited than I was before.

I just wish I didn't know about the Professor X cameo at the end. It would have been much more of a shock and surprise going into film without knowing it (obviously). I would have rather have seen Cyclops or hell even Gambit meeting him at

Hehehe... Geekgasm !!
Unfortunately, since this version of DoFP seems more based on the cartoon than the comics, we'll have Bishop instead of Rachel...

No, no, no, Cyclops and Jean Grey need to show up at the end of Days of Future Past. In the original timeline, Wolverine never joined the X-Men until the original X-Men movie. As a result of Days of Future Past, the original two X-Men movies are not going to play out the way they did: Senator Kelly will not be killed by Magneto, Professor Xavier and Cyclops will not be kidnapped by Stryker, Jean Grey will not sacrifice herself and then come back as Dark Phoenix, kill Cyclops and then have to

Presumably we will then have a sequel X-Men: Age of Apocalyse that explains that, because the Americans did not develop the Sentinel program to hunt down mutants, mutants ended up becoming the dominant species on Earth and enslaving mankind with Apocalypse as their emperor. The movie could have Cable traveling from the future to tell the X-Men of today that they need to stop Apocalypse now in 2017 before he gathers an army of mutants that the world cannot defend itself against. Readers of the comic know that Cable was Nathan Summers, the son of Scott Summers and Madeline Pryor: in the movie he would be the son of Scott Summers and Jean Grey although I'm not sure how they could establish that.

There should also be a movie set in the eighties with younger versions of Scott, Jean and Ororo in the same team as Banshee, Havok, Beast, Gambit and Wolverine. Taylor Hitch could reprise his role as Gambit but somebody new might have to be found to play Wolverine because Wolverine is not supposed to age but Hugh Jackman isn't getting any younger. Or they could use CGI to keep Hugh Jackman to keep Hugh Jackman looking young.

Rogue, Colossus, Jubilee, Iceman, Pyro, Angel, Lady Deathstrike and Nightcrawler can't appear in the 80s because most of them were little kids if not new born babies in the 80s. For the record though, Lady Deathstrike in particular could appear in an Age of Apocalypse movie because the entire original X-Men trilogy will not have happened as a result of Days of Future Past, which means she would also still be alive in the new timeline.

Finally, with a Fantastic Four reboot on the way, they could do X-Men / Fantastic Four: Days of Future Present. In the comics, Days of Future Present was an X-Men / Fantastic Four crossover with Rachel Summers and the grown up Franklin Richards as the main characters. The movie can start with Rachel Summers and Franklin Richards getting married with future versions of the Fantastic Four and the X-Men in attendance but then Rachel is killed by a time traveling villain named Ahab whom Franklin then pursues into the past. The X-Men and the Fantastic Four end up fighting because they don't know which time traveler, Ahab or Franklin, is the real villain. That would probably be the last we see of the X-Men from the original trilogy unless of course there are New Mutants, X-Force and Generation X movies to follow.

The Origins game was sweet as hell, I agree. I also agree with the film exploring the mental side of Logan.

In retrospect, we now know how X-Men Origins: Wolverine should have been done

"It really does look like Logan is going to be mentally put through the wringer in THE WOLVERINE. Logan's mental state hasn't been explored that much in the films and it's one of the things that intrigues me the most about THE WOLVERINE."

X-Men Origins: Wolverine should have started with Wolverine having just gone through the procedure and Wolverine coming out as a wild animal with no memories at all. The Origin of Wolverine should have been told using flashbacks as Wolverine's memories

X-Men Origins: Wolverine should have started with Wolverine having just gone through the procedure and Wolverine coming out as a wild animal with no memories at all. The Origin of Wolverine should have been told using flashbacks as Wolverine's memories slowly came back. The challenge would have been to create the narrative such that the viewer could understand what happened by putting all the clues together but Wolverine would still be in the dark as to what exactly had happened. For example, the fact that Wolverine and Sabretooth were half-brothers should have been revealed at the end with Sabretooth telling Wolverine about his father and Wolverine having flashes of memories from before when he was James Howlett. They actually did do something like this with Silver Fox faking her own death and Wolverine only finding out in the last half hour that Silver Fox was still alive but it didn't work because we were supposed to believe that Silver Fox loved Wolverine but rather than tell Logan that Stryker had her sister held captive she instead betrayed Wolverine supposedly because she believed that Stryker would release he sister if she did as he asked. That was really dumb. Oh and then it turned out that her sister not only looked nothing like her but in promotional materials she was supposedly Emma Frost who in the comics is British. *facepalm*

Another problem

The Three Mile Island accident occurred on March 28, 1979. If Wolverine from the seventies appears in DOFP does he have his adamantium yet?
