Director John McTiernan set to direct action pic Red Squad this spring

Feb. 9, 2014by:

It's been 11 years since John McTiernan released BASIC, his last film since the long turmoil of a seven-year legal battle began, which ultimately ended in a one-year jail sentence, which he is currently serving. However, the action auteur of such films as DIE HARD, PREDATOR, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, and THE 13TH WARRIOR is not out of the game entirely. McTiernan is expected to be released from prison this spring and has already signed on to direct his first film literally out of the gate with RED SQUAD for Hannibal Classics.

From the press release:

"To “Red Squad” producer and Hannibal Chairman/CEO Richard Rionda Del Castro, having McTiernan direct this film represents the ideal pairing. 'We are thrilled John McTiernan will be directing ‘Red Squad.’ He is known for directing smart, exciting action films. And John is the type of director our film requires,' said Rionda Del Castro. 'His style will translate all the elements on screen, superbly.'"

The film is described as:

"...a story told in the spirit of a modern-day "Magnificent Seven."  The film centers on a former DEA agent, who has always had a rogue streak, and his select team of mercenaries as they descend upon a Mexican border town in a daring attempt to neutralize a ruthless drug lord."

This is tremendous news for me personally, as I have always regarded McTiernan as my favorite director, even if he's had his misfires (ROLLERBALL and BASIC among them). I'll reserve my feelings on the case that cost us 11 years without a new film from him, but would encourage anyone to take a closer look at the details. Regardless, I'm just happy to see McTiernan get back behind the camera, rather than leave the industry altogether and RED SQUAD sounds like a great use of his skills. Hopefully, it pulls together a solid cast to boot and we can settle in for some of the kinetic energy and action mayhem of a John McTiernan film once again.

RED SQUAD begins filming this spring.

Extra Tidbit: With a Die Hard sequel already being the obvious choice, what would YOU like to see McTiernan direct?

Ugh, why does it have to be Hannibal Classics? McTiernan is too good for that shoddy production company.

I love Sam Mendes, But I have long wanted McTiernan to direct Bond. It would be awesome!!

Let's not forget he made the Thomas Crown Affair (remake)!

yes yes yes please!

Would love to see him do new movies but in my hart i would like him to make a sequel to predator, die hard and even take on a true sequel to Aliens and terminator, next to Cameron he's the only one who can make them worth it. I just hope he keeps the same Visual style he had with his older movies and doesnt try to update it with what the studios think is cool nowadays, quick cuts, zoom in and out all the time, incomprehensable action etc.

This is fantastic!

He is one of the best action directors ever. The man had one hell of a streak with die hard, predator and red October. Back to back to back! I'm so glad he's back, wish he would have come back sooner to save the last two die hard films. Can't wait for red squad. If Marvel ever makes another Iron Man, they should give John a shot.

I missed McTiernan so much. Rollerball, Medicine Man, and Basic were his worst but everything else is grade A entertainment. Glad that he'll be out of prison and he should have been left alone by the Feds.

One of the greatest directors of his generation who completely got railroaded by the justice system for being famous. Usually it works the other way around with fame and people get away with stuff for being notable. But they decided to make an example out of McTiernan and ruin over a decade of his life when he didn't even commit a crime, while a thug like Justin Beiber, who repeatedly assaults people, walks free. Glad to have John back soon - and like everyone else I hope he gets to finish up

But I'm looking forward to his original projects as well!

I feel like another Die Hard would be a waste of his talents, only because Bruce Willis doesn't bother to play John McClane anymore and just shows up as Bruce Willis in a Die Hard flick. Maybe McTiernan could coax McClane out of him one last time, though. In any case, it'll be nice to see him directing again.

It was a significant step down from what McTiernan's better films. Though, from what I hear, still a step up from Rollerball.

We all forgive you for Rollerball and Basic. The new movie's synopsis may sound a little clich, but if there's anybody who can make it work it's John McTiernan!!!!!!!!!

Yippiee kay yay!

McTiernan is almost free again! its crazy to think at one point the man was neck and neck with James Cameron but now is sitting in a cell, i look forward to him getting back to what he does best. BTW that video tribute was epic.

Sounds like a mashup of The Last Stand and Sabotage. Please let this be the start of a comeback.

I'd peg it as "Extreme Prejudice" from the perspective of Michael Ironside.

if John McTiernan made one more Die Hard film that was up to par with the old ones I would literally shit myself.

I haven't seen either since their initial release but I remember thinking
Basic wasn't bad, not like ppl were saying at the time. And rollerball wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be.

Now im curious about what happened to him? Google time.

Tidbit: He should do the "Legend of Conan" if Verhoeven doesnt get the job. Or one last "Die Hard" to conclude the series.
