Director John Moore dishes some details on A Good Day To Die Hard

Jul. 26, 2012by: Paul Shirey

If you're like me then you likely have some trepidation over the next entry in the DIE HARD series, aptly titled A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD.  Bruce Willis returns to the franchise as underdog cop John McClane, this time teaming up with his son (Jai Courtney) to fight terrorists in Russia.  In the latest issue of Empire, director John Moore spilled some details about his take on the franchise and how he's approaching the tone and action of the pic.

On the question of the fifth film in the series being a "light-hearted romp":

"No, because that’s preposterous! I don’t know whether it’s post-financial crash or whatever, but I don’t think people are in the mood for that bollocks anymore. People are well savvy to the cynical reheating of any product, any franchise. Any shit won’t do. The bar’s a bit higher."

On the fish-out-of-water element with McClane in Moscow:

"There are a couple of great gags and a couple of great McClanisms. It’s not like he this idiot, bumbling around Moscow making ‘America won the Cold War’ jokes. It’s not Carry On Die Hard, I can assure you…"

On the scale of the action:

"The scope along goes from New York to Moscow. It’s very, very international. There’s a car chase through Moscow that’s taking us 78 days to shoot. So… yeah. That should answer your question!"

I don't know any director that would undersell his movie, so while these comments sound pretty good, I'm not yet convinced that Moore can deliver a worthy DIE HARD film, although I'm willing to give him a chance.  Two big factors that will influence my feelings on the continuation of this series are the rating and the footage.  If it's another PG-13 flick I'm already going to be peeved and if it doesn't tap into those signature McClane cinematic moments then all may be lost.

I'm hopeful and doubtful at the same time.  What do you think?  Do Moore's words assauge you in any way?

A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD romances it's way into your heart on February 14, 2013.

And here's some behind-the-scenes footage of the film being shot in Hungary

Extra Tidbit: At least it's not a reboot of the series, which might cause me to have a stroke.

Waiting anxiously...

I guess I'm in the minority too for liking all 4 movies. I agree the first is the best with the 3rd being right behind the 1st as my favorites. I liked Timothy Olyphant in the 4th one but I love him in almost anything he does. Can't wait to see the trailer and eventually the movie.

Max Payne

Look how brilliant the game Max Payne was from action perspective. There was a tremendous opportunity to leverage that and make a decent action flick. But no, Mr. Moore f*cked it so bad. I sincerely hope he does not screw this one up.

I'm going to hope the way "Rocky Balboa" turned out is what will happen here. "Rocky V" was hot garbage and I still refuse to believe it exists. Thank fully Stallone made up for it with "Rocky Balboa".
"Live Free and Die Hard" basically took a shit on all things Die Hard, but hopefully this movie will help me wipe that one from my conciousness of ever existing and make things right in my world and in the world of John McClane.

It's Die Hard & John McClane so I am game no matter what when it comes to these movies. I enjoyed all 4 movies & hopefully this one will be great also. On the thought of rebooting, I just don't get how you can reboot Die Hard because it's not Die Hard without Bruce Willis. Remember in the 90s when every action movie was compared to Die Hard. So a reboot will just another action movie & makes no sense.

a die hard fan

I'll probably always give a Die Hard movie a chance as long as it has Bruno in it. Even though they haven't all lived up to the awesomeness of first, each was a fun way to spend a couple hours.

I want the hardcore no bullshit John McClane back. I'm not so sure Moore can deliver but we'll see. Remember Moore, it's not just about the action. I didn't think the director of "Vantage Point" could deliver a kick-ass "Dredd" movie either but fuck was I wrong.

Minority...I think

I am probably in the minority on this site, but I enjoyed all 4 Die Hard movies (of course the first one is the best...BY FAR). I did have issues with the 4th one, but it was still fun....the Unrated DVD feels much more like a Die Hard movie than the theatrical release.
I remain optimistic as I await for the first trailer for this movie.

On the Tidbit: OH MY GOD, you just scared the hell out of me...they better NEVER reboot this. NEVER EVER!!! Oh man, now I'm sad because it's just a
