Director Jon Chu says Channing Tatum might return as Duke for G.I. Joe 3

12.16.2013

Do I really need to put a spoiler warning up for this news on a sequel to G.I. JOE: RETALIATION? It's probably not absolutely necessary, but if you didn't see the last film, you'll probably want to avoid the rest of this article. Don't say I didn't warn you.

MTV News recently talked to G.I. JOE: RETALIATION director Jon Chu about G.I. JOE 3, and he commented that the next film is "gonna be a really fun movie. We're taking it in a whole new direction," and that he is "taking it to another level with this one." Chu was asked if there's a chance Channing Tatum's Duke will return for the third film, and the director teased that it could happen, even though the character died in G.I. JOE: RETALIATION.

"You never know. Storm Shadow died in the first one and came back in the second one, and then other characters have died and never come back. The G.I. Joe world, the best thing about it is you never know who's coming back and who's not."

MTV News also tried to find out which new characters might be appearing in G.I. JOE 3, but Jon Chu wouldn't reveal their identities, saying only that they are, "exciting ones that I know the fans will love, and people that I've always wanted to work with."

I suppose Duke could come back, but should he? What do you think, G.I. JOE fans? Do you want the character to return or should he stay dead?

I was a big Action Force / GI Joe fan..going right back to when Cobra Commander was Baron Ironblood...even like that GI animated movie (well the second half of it, anyway). I say this...because the best bit of the two live action movies we've been given was Tatum and the Rock playing Call of Duty - very funny scene. Needless to say…both movies sucked...have no effing idea how the second one did so well. May be it was really good...and I missed it on the count of being distracted as I was

May be it was really good...and I missed it on the count of being distracted as I was waiting for an explanation as to why Storm Shadow was still alive. Heck, I'd have taken one of those 1950's Rocket Man explanations...where you see him blow up but in the next episode...the whole scene is redone...and he actually got out in time...any explanation would have done...just wanted one. I want my GI Joe to have some meaning...you know.

"Storm Shadow died in the first one and came back in the second one"

And the explanation was... Nothing. He just came back. Suddenly he was still alive.
I make up a frase for that: Coulsonesque.

Am I missing something in these films?????

I watched 1 and 2 with an incredibly open mind and childlike excitement......but they were just TERRIBLE MOVIES. What is it that others are seeing that I don't? I actually liked the 1st one better...but it was still horrible. I did enjoy Ray Parks as Snake Eyes, and Dennis Quaid as Hawk, and the tiny Brendan Frasier cameo....but that's it. I would rather suck rancid tuna from a dead hobo's @$$ than sit through another bad G.I. JOE movie.

Retaliation took itself WAY too seriously. I didn't hate it, but I certainly don't feel the need to watch it from time to time either. At least, as hockey as the first was, it was fun...bad, but fun. Retaliation was just...a movie I saw once and don't need to see again. NOT what you want a movie to do. Bringing Duke back seems stupid. I would love to see Scarlet back though, and Destro. Honestly though, my expectations are so incredibly low that I could care less what happens now. I'm more

I'd love to see another G.I. Joe movie. Extra tidbit: Tomax and Xamot.

I hope he returns. He's one of my favorite parts about the first two films.

And I know alot of people prefer Retalition, but I thought the first one was alot more fun.

I figured he might be back in the 3rd one, since they never really did show a dead body of Duke.

Finally this guy is talking sense!

Retaliation took itself so seriously that it forgot about the goofy charm the first one had, despite its blemishes. It was completely disrespectful to Tatum's character how he went out, even if the plan was to bring him back eventually, which I don't buy. As great as the Rock is (and Bruce Willis playing Bruce Willis), the second was sorely lacking continuity by ditching its star and coming up with a forgettable storyline. (Palicki was actually one of the movie's bright spots.) I'll take

I'll take this as PR and hopes right now, but if they want to make back some money without hamstringing a 3D price tag on this, they should sign Channing Tatum up ASAP.

I enjoyed G.I. Joe: Retaliation a lot more than many others did but I'm not sure how to feel about this. On the one hand, it's a cop-out but on the other, Duke is such an important member of the team. I didn't like Tatum as the character in the first film though, he looked so profoundly bored.

Tidbit: Tomax and Xamot.

I personally don't care. But in the future, if you're going to put a spoiler warning in the article, maybe make it so the headline of the article isn't the spoiler. Just a thought.

Title really isn't a spoiler. If I never saw the movie I would just assume he was debating on returning for the 3rd one after the 2nd one.

And for those who did see it? Now are we picking and choosing who gets the spoiler warnings? People who didn't see it probably don't care.

For those who did see the movie then it isn't a spoiler it is a reminder..... I don't know how something can be spoiled if you already watched the movie...
