Director Jon M. Chu gives an update on the status of the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe movie

Mar. 27, 2013by: Niki Stephens

So every great once in awhile we get a random update on the status of the HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE movie. This is our update for 2013 from director Jon M. Chu:

"We're still early but we're deep in experimenting. This is the most fun phase for me because we get to try everything we've ever wanted to try in [Masters of the Universe] and then we get to throwout all the things that don't work, which is most of it. [This allows us to know] what our tone is, where we're going to head with it and it's a very important phase because it shows [us] the direction we're going to go in the future. So we're very early, we don't know a lot yet other than that we're playing around and having a lot of fun."

I have no idea what to expect from this movie. I watched the hell out of some He-Man as a child, and one of my favorite action figures just happened to be She-Ra, but I feel like this movie can only have hopes to come out to be either more/less corny. Chu said that the script "blew him away," because he too was hesitant at first. No matter what though, I am looking forward to seeing Skeletor come to life.

Are you guys up for a live-action version of HE-MAN? Plus, what about Chu helming it? He did films like STEP UP 2 & 3, JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER, and G.I. JOE RETALIATION. Verdict is still out on the last one. How can we make this good?

Sorry, I had to.

Can's wait to see how this turns out but I'm hoping it will be the Epic movie it should be. I am also actually pretty partial to the Dolph Lundgren version.

It's not hard...

Just take the source material seriously. He-Man has the potential to be one of the coolest looking and most fun genre mash-ups ever made. But you can't stray away from the eye candy, you gotta embrace it. With good dialogue and a smart script, this movie could be HUGE. But they have to take it seriously.

In retrospect the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was a terrible cartoon. No wonder it spawned a terrible movie adaptation. The 2002 version of Masters of the Universe is infinitely better. I hope the new movie will take it's cue from that show.

A lot of ways it could go wrong, but get it right and there's an awesome film series to be made from He-Man. Skeletor is one of my favourite weaselly villains of all time. Him and Starscream.

Well the first Masters of the Universe with Dolph Lundgren & Courtney Cox is a definite cult classic, it's the typical 80s flick. The only way for this to work is to try to make it fun but at the same time be true to the characters & try not to make it to campy & over the top, that just doesn't work tby todays standards.

I want this to happen.
As a kid, I didnt miss a single episode. No kidding.
This script Chu is talking about, is it Stuart Beatties? I remember reading years ago about this script, it was called " Grayskull" back then if Im not mistaken.

Give it to him. He's proven he's worth his salt with GI Joe Retaliation, and perhaps he just might be able to deliver a Masters of the Universe movie that can hit all the right nostalgia buttons and still take itself somewhat seriously. I'm glad Jon Chu will probably be known as "the guy who saved GI Joe" instead of "the guy who did that Justin Bieber movie" from now on.

I am a big fan of He-Man, I will say that I am curious with the choice of director and worried about what direction he will take this movie. I will say, it will be a big improvement over the 1987 version.
This new movie, better have a story that is rich in the Masters of the universe world, the characters better be awesome, believeable and have all the awesomeness of the 80's cartoon!

If done right, the movie could be The Lord of the Rings meet the old Fire And Ice cartoon from the 80s.

What I'd like to see is the look and feel of Eternia from the 80s cartoon, with a storyline similar as that of the 2002 animated series, and some updated character designs that are still reminiscent of the original designs.
A cameo from Dolph Lundgren wouldn't hurt either.

As long as its of quality and bares at least some resemblance to what we He-man fans grew up with, I'll be interested. If it is given the (Michael Bay) TMNT, G.I. Joe or Transformers kind of treatment, then fuck no!
