Director Kevin Tancharoen is stepping away from Mortal Kombat

10.28.2013

FINISH HIM!

Director Kevin Tancharoen took to Twitter recently to announce that he was stepping away from the MORTAL KOMBAT reboot:

This is interesting news especially since Tancharoen just spoke about the reboot in September. Everything seemed to be moving along with the director stating that they had a good script but were still figuring out the budget along with location sites. The film would be a true reboot in the sense that it would be separate from the series that Tancharoen had already created.

The director did not indicate if he was severing all ties with the world of MORTAL KOMBAT including the web series. Even Johnny Cage (Casper Van Dien) was shocked:

As someone who has loved MORTAL KOMBAT since finding the game in an arcade back in the early 90s, I don't care if they make another movie. I am completely satisfied with the one W.S. Anderson made. Yep, I have no shame in admitting that.

I think it would be better if they produced a TV series. Don't get me wrong, I would love a movie too but I think that MK: Legacy would be awesome as a full TV series(with episodes at least 30 mins long and a few flaws fixed).

Hope they can move forward.

The storylines and elements should move toward the film. The mini series has the right feel.

Woo Hoo!! Score one for the MK fans!

This dude is a joke and the miniseries was horrible. What a waste of talent and characters. This is one of those times I could just jump for joy. I hope this leads to the downfall of the reboot movie!!

its just me

I guess im the only one who doesnt like the first film from back in the 90s. Its cool that people like that version, i just didnt like how certain things in that film turned out. One example is for a film that was based off a violent video game, i dont recall a drop of blood being shown especially when Liu Kang gets kicked through a wall by Reptile, get his ass kicked, then land acouple blows and make Reptile dizzy and beats him. But i apparently am the minority and I dont want to knock others

I guess in my head at the time, the film would turn out more like "BloodSport"

Mixed

Only watched the first season. Should I watch season 2? Anyway, I don't think a movie would do justice. Maybe a TV series on FX, AMC, or Showtime?

Maybe great better can do something with it!

... but I doubt they'll bring something good on the big screen for Mortal Kombat.

As a fan of Rebirth and his Legacy series (especially season two) I'm sorry Tancharoen won't be staying with the reboot. At the same time, the man has shown himself more than capable as a director, and it would be nice to see how he'd fare with something outside of the MK universe.

I loveeeeddddd...

MK by WS it was really awesome, its a pure fun 90's movies. That is deft his best movie next to event horizon. But I don't get why kevin left this film, maybe creative differences and all. He truly made an awesome MK universe.

It's sad that the concept from Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, won't be seen anytime soon.

That sucks. I knew the amount of devotion he had with the actual path towards the big screen with MK. Sad to hear he's out. As for the 1995 MK flick, it's fun, but I like Tancharoen's vision of the characters.

Maybe not so bad...

I loved MK in the 90s, but I am in agreement, Paul W.S. Anderson's film is good enough for me. It wasn't as violent or dark as the game, but it was very enjoyable. MK was a product of its time and is best left in 90s arcades, untainted by hackneyed attempts at reviving the brand. Honestly, I think the rebooted game on PS3 should suffice for most fans.

Oh well. I for one didn't think MK Legacy was all that, so I'm not too upset

I think Gareth Evans should take over. The Raid was a gloriously bloody martial arts film, and it'll be nice to see that intensity multiplied to 10

So I'm assuming that there will be no kontinuation of Legacy? That's a shame, I guess that second season didn't do so well. I don't suppose it's too much to ask them to wrap things up. Hopefully the new movie will still be awesome.
