Director Marc Webb on The Amazing Spider-Man 2, villains and future films

07.19.2013

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

What did everyone think of the first look at Electro from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2? The Mr. Freeze comparisons in the Strike Back made me chuckle, but hopefully Jamie Foxx's performance won't have the same level as cheese as Arnold Schwarzenegger's in BATMAN AND ROBIN.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 will have it's Comic-Con panel today that should reveal more about the film (and possibly future plans), but until then we do have this interview from Movies.com with Marc Web. The director talked a little about how more than one film was always the plan for Spider-Man, and how there will be story arcs that carry from one movie to the next:

There's always been a plan to extend this universe. To make a series of films that were interrelated and weren't purely episodic. That there were certain ongoing stories that were going to play out over multiple films. So, that's always been in the works and there's been some early talks about the nature of what those next two movies are. It's too early to talk about too many of the details, but if you pay attention to this film that's coming out, you may get a feeling and sense of what's to come in the future.

Sony announced a third and fourth movie last month, but we don't know if Marc Webb will be directing those films or not. Webb was asked if he would be back to direct three and four, and while he doesn't exactly answer the question, he does say there are things he has thought about for the next two films

The fourth one was a little bit of a surprise. We always talked about there being a set of three movies, but there may be elements that expand outside Spider-Man that could fulfill that fourth film.

Could one of those "elements that expand outside Spider-Man" be a spin-off with Black Cat? The character has been rumored to appear in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 or a future film and is a fan favorite. Webb went on to talk about Electro and how powerful the villain will be in the film:

Electro is a fantastically cinematic villain and there's something truly terrifying and godlike about his powers. And that's something that's been fun to develop and conceive of; not only visually, but conceptually how what happens when this creature, who's mythological in scope, is unleashed in New York City ... the visual spectacle of it is gonna be fantastic. We're doing some terrible things to Times Square, but it's gonna be fun to watch.

There are a lot of villains (or at least potential villains) in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, and we all know what happened the last time too many bad guys were crammed into one Spider-Man movie. This was pointed out to Marc Webb in the interview, and the director was asked what his plans are for his film so it doesn't end up like SPIDER-MAN 3.

One of the things about Spider-Man that's really fun is that the people who become villains often don't start out as villains. Most of the relationships are based in love[?] in some ways. We're teasing out certain characters that may not be his main foes... but the main villain is going to be Electro.

And if you are one of those fans that is worried that Rhino (Paul Giamatti) won't have his classic horn: relax. Marc Webb confirms that the character will have one in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. Who knew Rhino had such a loyal following?

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 with Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan, Chris Cooper, Sally Field, and Colm Feore swings into theaters May 2nd, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Do you think we'll ever get to see "Kraven's Last Hunt" on the big screen? It's one character (and story) I'd love to see in a future film.

I just really hope Rhino looks badass. I didn't enjoy the look of the Lizard at all, even when I deeply liked the movie.

Doing the Last Hunt could be a great idea. Not sure what the over-arching story is for ASM 2-4, but if it's successful, the could make ASM 5 be the Last Hunt. With all the goings-on in New York and crazy [link] people running around, Kraven shows up to hunt them all down.

KRAVEN!

When, if ever, will we see KRAVEN!?!?! I know I'm not the only one who believes a spin on his Last Hunt would make for one hell of a movie. Could take the franchise in a darker direction.

Why does every single news update on this site have to be about Spiderman 2 or DFOP?
God forbid any of us want to read news about a movie OTHER than those 2 films. By comparison, I think there was what, 1-2 news articles tops about the casting of Inherent Vice? Is this site ONLY for fanboys and not movie fans, or has this always been the case and I've just been oblivious to it for the past 4-5 years?

hey a spin off of BlackCat! i can see it now - Rhianna or Nicki Minaj running around in a scandily clad costume that doesnt even hide their real identity, with cheesy effects and a villian who really sucks. Wow! Box Office gold in the making. Im there! Psst, sarcastic again

I just hope the description of the New Goblin we got isn't true. Green hair? Fangs? No thanks. I mean make him look scary and intimidating, but you don't actually have to have him looking like a Goblin. For some reason, Peter literally acting like a Spider in some scenes in Amazing Spider Man just didn't feel right and were just annoying. It's like they didn't want us to forget who he was or something.

All I know is that DeHaan and Cooper have alot to live up to after the masterful jobs

When did the term "fanboys" become to mean primarily comic book fans rather than bitchy internet people who hate when they don't get their way?

You can't compare Inherent Vice to Spiderman 2.. There is literally more news for Spiderman 2 than Inherent Vice BY DESIGN. The people behind Spiderman like to tease and keep giving updates. PTA would probably rather you not get a single bit of news until the trailer. They can't report on whats not there to report on.

Cerealkiller has got a point. But I'd love to see some more indie, foreign and arthouse film news on here. It's out there, you just have to dig around.

I've been frequenting this site for, I think, the past two years or so and it has always skewed fanboy but seems to be moving increasingly even further in that direction. But to be fair so has the film industry as a whole.

You say you would prefer more news about indie or art house fare, but what are you referring to? The old indie film system has been taken over and bought out by the big studios. Independent American cinema doesn't really exist anymore. At least not in the sense it once

Independent American cinema doesn't really exist anymore. At least not in the sense it once did; with the ability to scrounge up decent budgets and some movie star talent. There used to be actors that could make their living by ONLY appearing in indie cinema. Obviously, that no longer exists.

@Cereal Killer

I dunno about that. Other websites had about a story a week on the various casting updates on Inherent Vice. Every week there was something new about either Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, etc. joining the cast. Saw none of that here. I mean these are big stars in a huge ensemble piece by one of the most respected directors of our generation, and they get less attention then some nonsense Felicity Jones might have mentioned in passing.

And I understand the producers of Spidey 2 want to continuously tease stuff every day for the film. What I'm saying is I think the editors on THIS site should have some discretion and not bombard us with all of it because it's incredibly lazy and repetitive imo.

Trust me, if you look around, there are TONS of interesting news stories every day that go completely unmentioned on here so that instead we can have 15 threads a day on Spider-Man 2 on what Dane DeHaan may or may not have accidentally butt-tweeted Felicity Jones. It's exhausting, and it's been keeping me more and more away from this site, which is unfortunate because this used to be #1 go to for entertaining movie news

Not trying to bash, just disappointed.
