Director Marc Webb says he won't be back for The Amazing Spider-Man 4

03.17.2014

Last month we learned Marc Webb will return for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3, however there was no word on if he will also be helming the fourth movie for Sony. It looks like the studio will have to find a new director for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4, because Webb recently revealed to The Daily Beast he'd like to move on to something new after the third Spidey flick.

"I’d like to be involved as a consultant, and I’ve already talked to these guys about it, but in terms of directing it, that will close out my tenure. I’ve had so much fun doing it, but after the third movie, it’ll be the time to find something else."

Sony might also need to find a new Spider-Man for the fourth movie. Last year Andrew Garfield said he wasn't sure if he'll be back for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4.

Marc Webb was also asked to share his thoughts on Spider-Man someday appearing with other Marvel characters in the future on the big screen, like The Avengers or Fantastic Four.

"We’re building out a more complicated Spider-Man universe with characters that people haven’t seen in other Spider-Man movies—The Sinister Six, Venom, and more. We’d all love to overlap with other studios, but it’s beyond my pay grade."

Webb goes on to say there will be other monsters in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 besides Harry Osborn's Green Goblin.

"Yeah. There will be some "creature of the night" popping up."

I wonder if "creature of the night" could be a tease for Morbius the Living Vampire. With Sony trying to expand Spidey's cinematic universe, you really can't rule anything out at this point.

Is Marc Webb leaving the franchise after THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 a good or bad thing in your opinion? And who would you like to see take over as director for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4?

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 will be in theaters on May 2nd, 2014, followed by THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 on June 10th, 2016 and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4 on May 4th, 2018.

I doubt Spider-Man will be back for 'The Amazing Spider-Man 4', either.

Not changing anything until the 4th!?! So, what this means is that we are GUARANTEED at least 2 more god awful Spiderman films.

Catching Fire didn't suffer for losing Gary Ross, if anything, it was even better than the first film, so maybe Marc Webb looks at that and feels it's safe to go after three movies. Justin Lin did solid work on three Fast and Furious movies and felt it was time to move on, and so should Webb.

I doubt it has anything to do with Webb feeling safe that someone else can make a good Spiderman movie and everything to do with him wanting to make a movie that isn't a Spiderman movie. we may all love to see the same characters in movies over and over, but as a filmmaker he likely wants to make different films instead of just the same character over and over.

Of course it is a good thing if Webb departs.

After spending about 6 years of his life making Spiderman films, if the guy has tapped his desire with the franchise how good could any subsequent film be if he doesn't really want do it?

I agree with Thunderdome. Alot of people on this site are jumping on the bandwagon of hating the old trilogy.

And I can't take anyone serious who uses grammar to describe a film like you just did.

So if Webb and Garfield both leave after three films, then this will basically turn into a Bond franchise? With a new Spider Man and director after every couple of films.

Could be interesting. Maybe. But I also wouldn't mind another reboot or at least another 'start' with a better director and actor duo.

Well, if the main actor and the director quit after the third film, Sony can reboot the series. Oh wait...

Goodbye, Marc. I do not like your interpretation of the the Spider-Man character and his universe, and this summer's Spidey movie is a skip-it for me, a major comicfan. After Amazing Spider-Man 3, a director might come along who resembles Sam Raimi in his/her vision. I want someone who respects the Spider-Man canon more than Marc Webb and his Sony bosses recently have.

While I did enjoy Raimi's first film, the other 2 are horrible. Webb has given us a far superior movie in the first one than Raimi had crafted in 3 attempts combined.

Grelber37 - I am with you. Raimi's films were at least colorful and fun. ALL SUPERHERO movies differ from the comic they are based on, so no point in arguing which is more or less - but Raimis films (at least the first 2) felt very spiderman-ish to me, a long time reader of spiderman.

Going by "its based on the comics" then I guess peter should die and doc ock can take over right? NO, because the films have to represent what the generic public knows to be spiderman - which is what raimi did

(even though they technically didn't have a golden age, unless you count namor, torch and cap.)
