Director Roberto Orci says Star Trek 3 will be set in deep space

Jun. 27, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

When it was announced Roberto Orci will be behind the camera for STAR TREK 3, most of you weren't too happy about the news, but maybe this will make you feel a little better about the next movie.

Orci was recently interviewed for the Humans From Earth podcast, where he revealed the Enterprise and its crew will have already started their five-year mission in STAR TREK 3, and it will be set in deep space.

In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie.  So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space.

Roberto Orci also joked about who the villains will be in STAR TREK 3.

The Horta is actually the villain in the next one – no – they are in deep space now, so lets see what’s out there.

While I enjoyed both of the new STAR TREK movies, I was disappointed with how a few things were handled in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS. I'm nervous about Roberto Orci making his directorial debut with STAR TREK 3, but I'm also not completely against it either. At least the Enterprise and its crew will actually be boldly going where no one has gone before in the next film. What strange new worlds and civilizations would you like to see in STAR TREK 3?

STAR TREK 3 should be in theaters sometime in 2016.

Let me guess: they find Klingons.
I mean it's either that, the Borg, or Tribbles, right? After those, you've officially run out of Star Trek things that the general populace is familiar with.

I like the new Star Trek movies. I know they reused elements from the original films but that is kind of the idea. Abrams remade Star Trek in a way that left the story and timeline of the original television series and films in tact so fans of those would still feel like what they grew up with was still relevant but could bring a new generation into the Star Trek universe.

ST: TNG episodes "Suspicions" and "Descent Part II" They fly ships into the Corona of a star. Don't make Trek claims when a Trek nerd is present. ;)

I believe in this one the ship comes across a probe that renders all machinery powerless as it broadcasts a strange signal. The crew must travel back in time to present day Earth in order to gather Dolphins, bring them back to the future to speak to the probe. See what they did there? It's dolphins this time instead of whales so it's a brand new story. And it's all an allegory on how 9/11 was an inside job.

Star Trek - Reboot/origin story, because we've been severely lacking those in the past 15 years.

Star Trek Into Darkness - Remake of Wrath of Khan.

Star Trek 3 - Okay now we're really gonna get into the Treking part of Star Trek and it'll be closer to what Star Trek is really about.

Three movies for them to finally try getting to what Star Trek is about. They could have done this from the beginning.

Why does no one ever bring up Space Seed? It was more like Space Seed than Wrath of Khan

Very true Ocelot, I do admittedly smile every time I hear/heard people whinging on how Into Darkness ruined Wrath of Khan, or as the above post suggests, remade it.

I've never actually seen the Space Seed episode so I couldn't draw that connection other than the fact that Khan's in it. I was just bummed to see them take take the Khan route for the sequel, when they could have done something completely new.

No, it was a rehash of Khan. Not only plot, but even lines, were lifted directly from the movie. All that was even remotely connected to Space Seed was who found Khan. The rest was rehashed bullshit.

"In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started."

No they didn't. That's like saying Rob Zombie's 'Halloween' finally showed the origins of John Carpenter's Michael Myers. They're two entirely different things, mate.

To me, Into Darkness was like Iron Man 2: I liked it but something was missing from the film that the first one had.
Hope Orci will find that.

I loved Star Trek Into Darkness. I know lots of people will disagree, but I gave it a 5 star rating. In many ways, it is the ideal blockbuster: great character beats and dynamics, exciting and coherent action sequences, breath-taking visual effects and a really memorable strong villain. The only other movie last year that I liked just as much was Her.

If Wrath of Khan didn't exist I'd almost agree. If you enjoyed it, cool. Then this is the Trek for you. For me it was the exact opposite. I'm still waiting for them to scrape together something original.

I'll believe it when I see it

Although it'll be nice to see Orci and Paramount ruin another character from the original, I would much prefer a more complex original villain. Nero was a very weak villain, Khan (Benedict was great) was a whitewashed version of a great character--they could have easily called him Gary Mitchell. I hope we don't get the Klingons as the main villains.

Look at that smug little beady-eyed shit-for-brains.

The government should castrate him so he doesn't pass his inferior and contaminated genes on to the next generation, for the good of humanity. Wouldn't that be amazing? A government mandate where if you produce too many piece-of-shit "summer blockbusters" - then the government eliminates you from the gene-pool? He can keep making his terrible "movies" and make lots of money, but I could rest easy knowing there won't be more Roberto Orci jrs coming down the pipeline.

What? Lots of states

What? Lots of states still have eugenics programs on the books.

He's the kind of man who would kiss your ass for being a fan of the property he got his greasy boney fingers on, while trying to insert a poison-laced pipe-cleaner down your urethra. Him and Kurtzman. Bunch of degerates. And he stole my lunch money.

Hey - I remember now - yeah Star TREK was about exploring. Yes that rings a bell. I'm glad it only took 2 movies to get to where the first film should've been.
They can easily establish characters and their relationships during a mission. The first hour of the first film could be how they got together and then they go on a mission in space. We don't need 2 FILMS to tell this story.
Anyway Spock better suppress his emotions now and be the real Spock. I am sick to death of crybaby Spock.
