Tony Scott, director of Top Gun, Man On Fire, and True Romance, has died (1944-2012)

Aug. 20, 2012by: Paul Shirey

UPDATE: It is now being reported that the director had "inoperable brain cancer" before his suicide. UPDATE#2: Sadly, now it is being reported that he did NOT have brain cancer. We will leave the rest to the autopsy results. At this point, we're just saddened to see this man's life end.

A crushing blow has been dealt to the filmmaking community today, as legendary director Tony Scott has died of an apparent suicide.  The 68-year-old director, known for his high-octane films like TOP GUN, CRIMSON TIDE, TRUE ROMANCE, and MAN ON FIRE, is best known for redefining the action genre with his quick-cut action and macho style that continues to be imitated to this day.

Authorities reported that Scott jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island in Los Angeles after climbing a fence and jumping.  A suicide note was found at the director's office and his death is being investigated as such.  "We will go where the facts take us. We have no reason to believe it was not a suicide," said Lt. Joe Bale of the L.A. Coroner's office.

Scott, brother of Ridley, began his career directing commericals, staring his filmmaking career with the 1982 film THE HUNGER with David Bowie.  Although not a critical success, the film attracted the producing pair of Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer, who helmed the English-born director to helm their jet plane actioner TOP GUN (1985), which served as the calling card for not only the director, but for Simpson/Bruckheimer, Cruise, and the action genre as a whole.

The director followed with BEVERLY HILLS COP 2 (1987), the Kevin Costner pic REVENGE (1990).  He returned to the Simpson/Bruckheimer fold with DAYS OF THUNDER (1990), then tackled the Shane-Black scripted THE LAST BOY SCOUT (1991)with Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans.  Scott then brought Quentin Tarantino's script for TRUE ROMANCE (1993) to the big screen with a massive cast, including Christian Slater and Christopher Walken.

CRIMSON TIDE (1995) was his next film, which began a frequent collaboration with actor Denzel Washington.  The two would make four films together, including MAN ON FIRE (2004), DEJA VU (2006), and THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 (2009), and UNSTOPPABLE (2010).

His other films include THE FAN (1996), ENEMY OF THE STATE (1998), SPY GAME (2001), and DOMINO (2005).  His final film was UNSTOPPABLE (2010), starring Chris Pine and Denzel Washington.

In the days to come, more details will likely be revealed, but I will always remember the artist and the truly epic legacy he has left in his wake.  As always, we encourage you to share your thoughts and feelings on the loss of Tony Scott, but ask that you keep your comments respectful.

Here's a serving of Scott's best to send him off...

Extra Tidbit: Personally, I credit Tony Scott as being the director who first awakened me to film as an art. I first noticed his style with TOP GUN and REVENGE, two films which I always felt had a distinct style all their own, which I'd never seen in any other film. It led me to buy my first "movie book," which cross-referenced all actors, directors, and films with each other. Upon discovering the resume of Scott, my film journey began and has yet to stop. He was a true inspiration and a visionary in his own right.

I don't believe it...

This is all too hard for me to accept. What could possibly possess him to take his own life like that??? It wasn't like he was done on his luck, nor did it seem like he was terminally ill. This all just came out of nowhere.

Love it or hate it, "Top Gun" was a pop culture phenomenon. And "Crimson Tide" and "Man on Fire" were just awesome. Denzel and Tony were an entertaining pair, even with some of their "lesser" work like the Pelham remake and "Deja Vu".

RIP

This completely fuckin sucks.

Man on Fire, The Last Boy Scout and True Romance were all great movies. I'll admit that the details behind his death seem suspicious.

I'm so happy I haven't seen a green banner yet. Anybody that would say something about Tony Scott in a negative way is a gigantic asshole. Tony Scott gave us several classic films and is to be remembered and revered. Fuck anyone who says otherwise.

I'm fully aware that seems dramatic but I've already read a couple of incredibly insensitive facebook statuses about his death. I like to hold Joblo readers to a higher standard but there's always one asshole who spoils the bunch and gets -37 points.

Damn it, I was not expecting to hear such terrible news. Tony Scott's films were some of the best contemporary action/thriller films made, they were exciting movies that weren't throwaway pieces of junk food, and were well-made in addition to being enjoyable to watch. One of his slightly less-remembered films is actually one of my favourites: Enemy of the State. Such a cool techno thriller that was cutting-edge when it came out and actually does not feel dated at all today. It's just horrific

I know I am going to get thumbs down for this, but I have to point out to the writer of this article: He didnt die from a Suicide attempt, he died from a Suicide! I would say it is impossible to die from a Suicide Attempt!

As for the news, I came to Joblo earlier same way I always do to see that headline, and this was at a time almost no other sites had this news, and my mouth was agape. The guy made amazing movies.

News is he had Inoperable Brain Cancer and that may be the catalyst.

This is a huge blow to the industry indeed. I really liked Tony's work, he was a great action director. And to hear that it was a suicide too, that's awful news. This is quite shocking and I'm really sorry to hear that the industry will no longer have his talent. Whatever made him do it, I hope he's in a better place now. RIP Tony Scott.

I'm baffled & shocked

I know the investigations are still in their early stages but fuck, man! Why would Tony Scott kill himself? It dosen't make sense because I still felt his best was yet to come and suddenly we're robbed of this great man who set the pace for (and to an extent revolutionalised) action flick visuals that have become standard.

RIP (T_T')

RIP

Amid the chaos of that day, when all I could hear was the thunder of gunshots, and all I could smell was the violence in the air, I look back and am amazed that my thoughts were so clear and true, that three words went through my mind endlessly, repeating themselves like a broken record: you're so cool, you're so cool, you're so cool.

Tragic. Suicide is a tragic way to go because it isn't the death of the man but of the spirit. He had a great career and an enduring film legacy. It saddens me that he would jump off a bridge and kill himself, as accomplished as he was, it couldn't have been so bad as to be worth killing himself.

Holy shit.

I did not see that coming. Of all people, all DIRECTORS, just whoa.

I've always admired the man's style, sometimes more than the movies he made, (Taking of Pelham didn't need to exist, and Unstoppable felt like it had a lot of unneeded baggage). He was always so enthusiastic about his work. And about his STYLE.

Crimson Tide, The Last Boyscout, True Romance, Man on Fire, and Domino are probably my favorites, with special note to Days of Thunder, Enemy of the State, Top Gun,

I still just can't believe ... that Tony Scott isn't among us anymore.
The most creative and unique visual director ever.. The only one in Hollywood still experimenting with the medium (even though he already was 68).
True inspiration.
Just can't get it into my head... that there now isn't anyone left in Hollywood with such a visual eye. :(

Wow. I can't believe that...

I never would've expected to read something like this... Especially about Tony Scott. He was an amazing talent. Not all of his films were great. Some of them weren't really all that good... But they were always interesting. He may not have been as creative as his brother, but he loved to entertain, and that's all he cared about. True Romance will be playing in my home tonight. God bless you Tony. You will be missed.

No Words

Truly a sad day for cinema and admirers of the medium. Immense talent, and one of the reasons why the term "movie" is short for "moving pictures;" like his brother, he was always trying to push filmmaking techniques to their fullest, and it's a damn shame that he won't get to do it any more.

Rest in peace, Mr. Scott. And condolences to his loved ones.

Terrible news.

RIP. It's too bad we won't get to see his Top Gun 2. Despite the arguments over whether it should be made, I was rather looking forward to seeing HIS take on it. Let's hope that project either dies, or is taken over by his brother. Cause it won't be the same now.

Also, Enemy of the State has always been one of my favorite films to cite when showing people how easy it is for the government to track people. They could do that shit back in the early 90's. And people don't think they can do it

Hell, if I know where you had lunch, then the government can know anything they want, if they needed or wanted to know. Great flick.

Very sad news indeed.
