Directors chosen for a prequel to The Shining and a sequel to The Ring

07.18.2014by:

It looks like a couple of horror film projects are beginning to gain some traction, as directors have been announced for both. First up is THE OVERLOOK HOTEL. For fans of the film/book, you already know that's pertaining to THE SHINING. The film will evidently tell the origin story of the hotel during the era of its first owner, Bob T. Watson. Mark Romanek is being tapped to direct the piece. I can't speak for the script, but Romanek's films (NEVER LET ME GO, ONE HOUR PHOTO) excel with their pace and atmosphere. He's certainly more than an adequate director. The script was written by Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead), with James Vanderbilt, (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and Brad Fischer and Laeta Kalogridis are producing.

Next up is another sequel to THE RING, to be directed by F. Javier Gutierrez. Gutierrez first made some waves with his directorial feature-film debut, BEFORE THE FALL. Aside from a third Ring film, he's also attached to THE CROW reboot that's been floating around for a while now. No word yet on production dates for either project, although THE OVERLOOK HOTEL sounds like it's a little further along than The Ring 3: The Re-Ring-ening.

Extra Tidbit: Do you have any interest in either of these projects?

Make it TV

As soon as i heard this, I thought it would make a great cable tv series or miniseries. The cast can be huge and the supernaturalness can slow burn into a creepfest. Hmmm i like it!

Finally, the movie about a haunted hotel that isn't haunted yet that we've all been waiting for.

While I would much rather see an adaptation of Dr. Sleep rather than a prequel to the shining, given the talent that is involved with it so far I am not counting this out. The Ring 3 I really have no desire to see. However, I really want to see what Gutierrez will do with The Crow. Based on what I have heard I am excited for that. I love the original movie with Brandon Lee but this version sounds like it will be much closer to the source material which excites me.

it's really simple

You probably ignored the book, so just ignore the movie. If you don't want it, you don't have to watch it. The mystery will remain intact. If you don't want to see them made just so no one else can potentially enjoy them, now you're just being an a troll.

BS

Do not make a prequel to The Shining. I agree to leave the mystery of the Hotel alone. On a side note, who gives a sh*t about The Ring part 3. Those stopped being good halfway though the first film.

Bring on the Overlook Hotel

Fuck you Ring 3. I don't know what came first the Ring or the Grudge but both seem to have started the pussiest generation of horror movies. The first Ring was ok but it seems like right after they came out a whole bunch of horror movies started using the same cgi crap ghost/ shadow to scare poeple. Prime examples the cell phone movie, mama, and all usually pg-13. I hate it and am glad to see horror at least found a place on the small screen since major movie companies have lost all interest in

Stop the damn prequels already. Can't there be some mystery to things? Can't people use tier own imagination and come up with their own idea what happened?

I was more interested in the Shining prequel when Alfonso Cuaron was rumored to direct. That said, One Hour Photo was very decent, the screenwriters involved with Walking Dead and Zodiac are involved, so this may turn out all right.

I'm less optimistic about the Ring sequel, but we'll see.

Absolutely no desire to see a sequel or prequel to either. This is just a lazy idea to grab some more cash at the box office.
