Director's Guild nominates Tarantino, Bigelow, Cameron...

The Directors Guild of America, eerily accurate prognosticators for the Oscars (winners of the DGA award have won the Best Director Oscar the last five consecutive years, only not jibing three times since 1990) announced their five director nominations yesterday. The names given nods aren't too surprising, but here they are nevertheless:

Kathryn Bigelow
(THE HURT LOCKER)

James Cameron
(AVATAR)

Lee Daniels
(PRECIOUS)

Jason Reitman
(UP IN THE AIR)

Quentin Tarantino
(INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS)

The nomination for Lee Daniels also represents the first time ever an African-American has been nominated for the DGA award. And Kathryn Bigelow is only the seventh woman to receive a nod since the award first began going out in 1948. Good for them, especially Daniels (even if I'd say he's the weak link of the five).

Winners of the DGA award will be announced on January 30th.
Extra Tidbit: So who are the locks come Oscar? It'll definitely be a battle of the exes with Cameron and Bigelow, of that I have no doubt. Reitman's in, I'm sure. But I'm really just happy to see QT get a nod here, seeing as how BASTERDS just gets better and better for me with each viewing.

I'm okay with this. I do hope QT wins it, as Basterds was phenomenal.

Yea

Personally, I think Spike Jonze should have been nominated for WTWTA. And I know the hate I might receive for saying this, but I think Marc Webb should be up there (or at least win an oscar) for (500) Days of Summer, which is my favorite film of the year.

BUT, as for the directors/films up there, I think Tarantino should get the win.

Knowing the Oscars, if Cameron doesn't sweep it, it would be someone from left field like Reitman or Daniels. Tarantino probably has no chance (unfortunately). But I'd love to see Bigelow take it, Hurt Locker was stunning.

Avatar better not get nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, it does not deserve it at all.

It will. There's 10 this year. No doubt whatsoever.

This is a surprisingly solid nominee crop - although I think only two of those would be on a personal list of mine. Let's hope the Oscars manage to grow some balls this year (remember, Nolan pulled a DGA nomination last year).

I'm not pre-judging it and am completely willing to believe that it is, but has anyone seen Precious that can confirm it's really THAT good?
