Disney already has some writers in mind for Star Wars: Episodes 8 and 9

11.20.2012

After choosing Michael Arndt to script STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, Deadline Hollywood is hearing that Disney has already approached writers for Episodes 8 and 9.

Those writers are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. They do not mention which sequel either scribe will be attached to. You should be familiar with the work of both men. Kasdan scripted both THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI. Kinberg had a hand in SHERLOCK HOLMES and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.

Deadline states that they are already seeking writers for the next two installments in order for George Lucas to start mapping things out.

If this is true, both of these choices are good in my opinion, especially Kasdan. He already is quite familiar with the universe, so he has one up on Kinberg. I have nothing but respect for Kinberg, who did an awesome job on another view of the X-Men. It could have been handled so horribly, yet we ended up with something fresh and far from disappointing.

Again this is just a rumor at this point. Will be interesting to see if it winds up being fact, even if it's only one of them that winds up with the job.

The Kasdan Strikes Back

Great news if it pans out, they should also get him to script the inevitable Indy reboot, sequel or whatever the hell they decide (remember he also wrote Raiders), he could turn that franchise around.

This will be a great move, to bring back someone familiar with writing for that cinematic universe and who's responsible for what many consider the best-written entry in that franchise as well - plus Raiders! I hope Kasdan meets with Michael Arndt so they can discuss some story beats before Arndt finishes up his Star Wars VII script.

Actually Leigh Brackett is the one who's *really* responsible for penning the best-written entry in the franchise, although Kasdan certainly lent a helping hand.

Overall I am very happy with two of the writers they've picked out (Arndt, Kasdan) and fairly happy with the other (Kinberg).

Lawrence Kasdan is a legend of film and getting him to write for the new series will be the best move Disney could make. On the other hand, Simon Kinberg is fucking terrible. He didn't "write" X-men First Class (just a producer) and he's the THIRD credited writer for Sherlock Holmes.
A list of stuff he DID write includes: xXx: State of the Union, Jumper, This Means War and the beloved X-Men: The Last Stand. Basically, he's awful at everything he has ever done and has already killed one

George Lucas will remain involved with Star Wars. That is good news. Lucas produces questionable quality on his own (i.e. the Star Wars prequels). However, he collaborates very well as audiences see in the original Star Wars trilogy and in the Indy movies.

That's excellent news, I've been saying all along that it is more important who they bring in to write these scripts than who they get to sit in the director's chair.

Simon Kinberg's like giving one of the movies to David Goyer, might as well get Akiva Goldsman too. Though, Kasdan is music to my ears!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I think Kasdan is a terrible idea. Star Wars needs some fresh vision & ideas. It's going to need something other than the nostalgia factor of having Kasdan return. Sure, it might make some fanboys happy in the short term but I think that the movies themselves will suffer in the long run.
