Disney does not currently have a sequel to Big Hero 6 in development

02.18.2015

Disney made their Marvel Comics animated feature BIG HERO 6 with the knowledge that it would likely be an automatic hit. With their string of non-Pixar hits like WRECK-IT RALPH, FROZEN, and TANGLED, Disney has several burgeoning franchises on their hands. So, when will any of those movies be getting a sequel? In regards to BIG HERO 6, don't hold your breath.

Speaking with Creative Screenwriting about their Oscar-nominated hit, BIG HERO 6 directors Don Hall and Chris Williams spoke about the potential for further adventures starring Hiro, Baymax, and the other rookie heroes. Williams shared this.

"[Laughs] We’ll see. We just finished this one, and the truth is, we’re exhausted from the ordeal of making it. It was really fun, but it was long hours, and it was pretty intense. It’s a pretty emotional time for us. These are characters that we’ve grown to know very well, now it’s time to let go of them, and they’re going into the world without us. We’re in the middle of that phase. So we haven’t talked about or thought about any sequels or anything like that. Having said that, of course, we love these characters, and the thought of working with them again some day definitely has its appeal."

Hall continued with this.

"John Lasseter is very supportive of the directors, and he won’t force them to put out a sequel unless they have a story that really excited about. It has to feel like a story that really has to be told, or deserves to be told. It can’t just be cashing in on the success of a previous film."

I enjoyed BIG HERO 6 quite a bit and the movie is one of the few Disney animated films crying out for a sequel. I could leave FROZEN and WRECK-IT RALPH as standalones, but the comic book nature of BIG HERO 6 gives the filmmakers a wide range of places to take the story. I would prefer that Disney continue to try and create unique and original films rather than tons of sequels, but BIG HERO 6 is the one I would have no problem with seeing more of.

BIG HERO 6 hits Blu-ray on February 24th.

It's too bad that I'd have to boycott it (along with the original Big Hero 6, Maleficent, Need for Speed, Frozen, and Planes 2), as Disney is no longer releasing their 3D movies on 3D Bluray...
...in the USA...
...WTF?

Why not...
I'd like them to explore the secret exposed in the post credit scene (with Stan Lee)... Is/was he a superhero or a supervillain ? The consequences for the BH6 team... This kind of things.

Why not?

They have sequels for everything else and they don't deserve it...

Big Hero 6 was a great animated film

I'd prefer a sequel to Wreck-it Ralph, I thought that was better. Big Hero 6 was entertaining, but it did feel more like a pilot for a show (albeit a very beautifully animated one) with more to come rather than it's own film. Maybe it's just that there's been so many comic book origin story movies in recent years, this movie just felt like another version of what's become so familiar.

I agree this one needs a sequel more than any recent Disney. Not counting Incredibles. It felt like they were just getting going when it ended. But Mr Mambo is kind or right, it was bland. The concept and some characters were great, but it was too jokey and light. Make part 2 with a story as good as the animation!

I saw it last night - loved it. Fred is the best...pretty much anyone who grew up with comic books and an active day dreaming imagination of being a hero will relate to him - still cracking up at some of the stuff he did once he's superhero'd up. Definitely up for a sequel.

I LOVED Big Hero 6...

...but it's good to see that they won't make a sequel just for the sake of it. If they can figure out a story that comes naturally from the one they already told, then I'm all for it! Big Hero 6 managed to hit on some pretty heavy themes, so hopefully any potential sequel continues in that vein. Man, now I'm thinking back to how much fun that movie was. What a blast.

Big Hero 6 was incredibly bland

The trailers made it look really good, but it just fell flat to me. Very cliche and downright boring at times. They didn't do anything special with it, and add the fact that they took the Marvel logo off of it completely.

Good for Disney

Part of what killed Disney in the 1990's was their obsession with turning animated hits into franchises with the infamous "dreck to video" sequels. Disney's animators and writers are obviously firing on all cylinders these days, so let them create great stories. No need to sequelize BIG HERO 6 unless there's a great story to be told.

I'd love a sequel but you're dead right - No need to sequelize BIG HERO 6 unless there's a great story to be told.
