Back in August Johnny Depp officially signed on to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 and Disney announced in January that the fifth movie in the franchise would be returning to theaters in 2015. One of the big questions about PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 is who will be directing the film, and now Deadline is reporting that Disney has a short list of names they are considering for the movie.

According to Deadline, Disney is interested in Fredrik Bond (THE NECESSARY DEATH OF CHARLIE COUNTRYMAN), the directing duo Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (KON-TIKI, MAX MANUS: MAN OF WAR, BANDIDAS) and Rupert Sanders (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN). Apparently Rønning and Sandberg are getting the most buzz but an offer hasn't been made to anyone just yet. Production on the film is scheduled to start at the end of this year or the beginning of 2014 but Disney wants to get a director signed on to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 within the next couple of weeks.

I'll give Disney some credit for at least having some interesting names on the list. Rupert Sanders seems like the most conventional choice to helm the film but I wouldn't be surprised if Rønning and Sandberg end up directing PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5. I know a lot of people at this point have written off the PIRATES franchise, but there's always a chance a new movie could be decent, right? Maybe I'm like Jim Carrey in DUMB AND DUMBER and I think one in a million is a pretty good chance. But hey you never know: look what happened to the FAST AND FURIOUS franchise.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5: THE QUEST FOR MORE DINERO is scheduled to be released on July 10, 2015.
