Disney has come up with a short list of directors for Pirates of the Caribbean 5

May. 10, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

Pirates

Back in August Johnny Depp officially signed on to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 and Disney announced in January that the fifth movie in the franchise would be returning to theaters in 2015. One of the big questions about PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 is who will be directing the film, and now Deadline is reporting that Disney has a short list of names they are considering for the movie.

According to Deadline, Disney is interested in Fredrik Bond (THE NECESSARY DEATH OF CHARLIE COUNTRYMAN), the directing duo Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (KON-TIKI, MAX MANUS: MAN OF WAR, BANDIDAS) and Rupert Sanders (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN). Apparently Rønning and Sandberg are getting the most buzz but an offer hasn't been made to anyone just yet. Production on the film is scheduled to start at the end of this year or the beginning of 2014 but Disney wants to get a director signed on to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 within the next couple of weeks.

I'll give Disney some credit for at least having some interesting names on the list. Rupert Sanders seems like the most conventional choice to helm the film but I wouldn't be surprised if Rønning and Sandberg end up directing PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5. I know a lot of people at this point have written off the PIRATES franchise, but there's always a chance a new movie could be decent, right? Maybe I'm like Jim Carrey in DUMB AND DUMBER and I think one in a million is a pretty good chance. But hey you never know: look what happened to the FAST AND FURIOUS franchise.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5: THE QUEST FOR MORE DINERO is scheduled to be released on July 10, 2015.

Extra Tidbit: Do you like any of these directors for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 or is there someone else you'd like to see running the show?

Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg sound like pretty interesting candidates - they did, after all, make a film completely set at sea and by all accounts did a very good job at it. I actually really enjoyed Pirates 4. Yeah, it's not a popular opinion, but I found it as entertaining as the first one and chock-full of very fun set pieces (the carriage chase, the mermaid attack, Blackbeard using the ship's rigging to hang his crew, the face-off between Barbossa and Jack on the teetering ship) and

I think more than a bit is riding on how well The Lone Ranger does to see if the audience has interest for another Pirates.

" I know a lot of people at this point have written off the PIRATES franchise, but there's always a chance a new movie could be decent, right?"

Ermm, sorry but I think those people are in a pretty irrelevant minority. Critics have written off POTC. Maybe overly-critical moviegoers have written-off POTC. But the franchise still has a massive fanbase and it's proven here with Disney trying to get a fifth installment out. They may not all be great movies, but POTC is fun and entertaining and just a great way to spend 120mins in a cinema during the summer. I'm all in for a 5th go-round.

Also, Rupert Sanders. Snow White wasn't great -

Also, Rupert Sanders. Snow White wasn't great - or even good - but the man has a good grasp of wide, epic shots and has an eye for great visuals. POTC needs that.

not sure how you can get pumped about the guy that brought us Bandidas. This franchise is in trouble and if they cant do better than 4, save us all the pain

I enjoyed the first three pirates' movies...a lot (then I'm also that person who loved all three Matrix movies). Then I saw the fourth one...and bearing in mind, I'm not one of those posters that usually disses movies...it was just...so meh. I don't know...may be Sparrow's shenagians or tendencies were no longer funny...or that boring subplot with the mermaid consistently reminded me that they really needed Will and Elizabeth back (and yes, I enjoyed those characters too!)...I dunno...was

It was the second from least fun movie I saw that summer in the cinema...saved only by that mess that was the Green Lantern. Hence, I'm neutral on this for now.

I had no idea they were still making these

I stopped watching after #2. I can't imagine any director choice that would get me to come back.

Pirate Life

I liked the first few stories of this franchise but its growing old...I understand the whole thing of..if the last movie made good money then a sequel is right around the corner, but I think they should plan to wrap this franchise up on a high note and call it good.

None of the directors on that short list really get me excited.

I'll give this next film a chance since I thought the fourth one was the best one since the original. But they should really make this the last one of the franchise....at least with Depp.

Rupert Sanders all the way. Regardless of what anyone thougth about Snow White & The Huntsman, Rupert Sanders' short films are amazing. The guy is a powerhouse filmmaker.

As long as international box office grosses keep increasing, we will be seeing a lot more of these. The last Pirates was the least successful in North America, but the most successful worldwide.

Couldn't finish the last one

I take pride in finishing films that no one could sit through...I tough it out. It wasn't that "On Stranger Tides" was a bad movie but it was boring and could feel the icy chill of the apathy come through the screen. Maybe one day I will finish it.

You didn't finish the movie. Your argument is invalid.

Meh

I used to love the Pirates franchise but each subsequent movie has gone down in quality. I'll still see it but I'm not expecting it to recapture the magic of the original.

Similar comment to my own. Sit tight and wait for the 12 year olds with the maturity and movie appreciation levels of a gnat to hit you with their thumbs down.

Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg

would be an awesome and inspired choice! Hope they get the gig out of these for sure, after them I'd say the Charlie Countryman guy, but he seems too out there...

Kon Tiki is supposed to be great, and the trailer looked great. Please please not Rupert Sanders though. My personal choice would be Tim Burton though... yes, Tim Burton. I think it could both reenergize Tim Burton's career but also the Pirates franchise... plus the relationship with Depp and Burton could make for a really special,

I would've loved to see that and honestly am a bit shocked he isn't on the shortlist like he was a few months ago... damn

The 4th film was the worst yet. Much like Indiana Jones and Die Hard, this series should have stopped at 3 films. Besides, between the Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars films, I doubt Disney will be hurting for money. Lets put that Pirates 5 money towards Tron 3 instead.

Unless...

...they bring back Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley to continue their story, I have no need to see any PoC movies after the third installment. I know everyone is like, "They won't ever come back, that was their story", but that's bullshit and I know a lot of people agree with me.

Anyone else bored of Johnny Depp? I loved the first movie, tolerated the second and third and disliked the 4rth. We really do not need another POTC movie where Johnny Depp does the SAME OLD SHIT over and over and over and over and over etc.
