Disney in very early talks with Emma Watson for a live-action Cinderella

Emma Watson/Cinderella

Looks like Disney is breaking out the glass slipper again.

Variety is reporting that the studio has been in contact with Emma Watson to play the lead in a live-action version of CINDERELLA. The film will be directed by Kenneth Branagh and Cate Blanchett has already been cast as the wicked stepmother. The talks are in the very early stages so this isn't a lock yet. Disney also considered other actresses such as Gabriella Wilde, Imogen Poots, and Alicia Vikander but couldn't get any of the actresses to commit to the role.

Look, I'd much rather see Emma Watson in Darren Aronofsky's NOAH or THIS IS THE END, but lets face it: actors and actresses have to make their money. Disney is probably going to throw a good chunk of change at her and it might be easy to shit on her for taking it, but it's not like she's only been doing kid friendly or big budget movies besides HARRY POTTER. She's got some acting chops and if there's going to be a CINDERELLA live-action movie, why not Emma Watson? Would you rather have Kristen Stewart?

Extra Tidbit: What Disney princess do you think is next to get the live-action treatment? God help us if we get an ALADDIN movie with Megan Fox as Jasmine...

Disney Princess stories are so vapid. They're all just damsel in distress stories with magic thrown in. I hope Emma recognizes this and steers clear.
The only Disney Princess that isn't a damsel in distress is Merida, but it's not like we need a live action remake so soon.
If she had to play a Disney Princess, however, she should play Ariel, since no other Disney Princess ever shows off her body like Ariel does - and Emma Watson has a smoking hot body. Unfortunately, Ariel hardly speaks, so

I don't understand why anyone would "shit on her" for playing Cinderella. Why would that even be something to consider? Did Amy Adams get shit on for being in Enchanted?

I think it's pretty spot on casting. I can't think of anyone better than Watson for Cinderella.

(Just playing the unwanted, outcast, orphan type child. She's good at that. I can totally see it.)

Conflicted

While I like the idea for the casting, do we really need another CInderella movie? The story has already been done to death through different ways (TV movies, Variations featuring other Disney child starlets HIllary Duff and Selena Gomez) why does this movie need to happen?

I'd love to see it work like how Maleficent is happening through the eyes of the villain, maybe make the wicked step mother the main focus or some kind of hook that could make this version unique. If not, i'm sorry but

Not being a Harry Potter fan, I never really understood the hype about Emma Watson. But after watching "The Perks of Being a Wallflower", I completely, completely get it. And Cate Blanchett would absolutely kill in the role of the Wicked Stepmother.

Gotta make the occasional tentpole flick to fund your indie faves

I have to respect any actor or actress who takes this approach: appear in a big-budget, tentpole flick and then use that visibility and goodwill to build interest in films they really want to be in. If making this movie ensures NOAH or THIS IS THE END get more interest, then more power to her.

I think Potter already built interest in her next 20 films.
