Disney is planning a reboot of The Rocketeer

Aug. 21, 2012by: Niki Stephens

THE ROCKETEER is a movie that I cherish. I remember seeing it back in 1991, and thinking it was one of the coolest things I had witnessed. I also wanted to be Jennifer Connelly. That white dress...gorgeous.

Word has it that Disney is looking to reboot the property. In the initial news from Vulture, they mention that the move is "curious" in the sense that THE ROCKETEER has similarities to another Disney-Marvel moneymaker, IRON MAN. They continue further by noting that IRON MAN came first in the grand scheme of things, and later came the action hero of the 1930s, THE ROCKETEER created by Dave Stevens and published in 1982.

Joe Johnston, who recently helmed CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER was the one who directed THE ROCKETEER. He wanted to make a sequel to the film, but the idea never came to fruition. Now Disney has decided to make a reboot/do over/whole new film, what have you, and are currently looking for a writer. Will Johnston get to come back and directed the new version? I'd say no, they will get some fresh meat on this one.

Do you look forward to another ROCKETEER?

I love the Rocketeer. I don't think a reboot could capture the magic of the original. The casting was perfect, the direction by Johnson had the right balance for a family friendly action film, and the uplifting score by James Horner is one of his best. I know the Rocketeer has a small but loyal group of fans, and I feel if Disney pushes this to be a mega box office success like John Carter or Tron Legacy it'll probably fall short of expectations.

At least set it in the same time period you Hollywood schmucks.

HELL YES!

I've wanted a sequel to the Rocketeer since I saw the original back in 91. I'll happily settle for a remake, here's hoping Disney uses their Marvel cred to bridge the Rocketeer into that cinematic universe.

I'm game for another Rocketeer. Why does it have to be a reboot though? Just make a sequel to the original. Cast someone new to play Cliff Secord. Make the story something like: After the destruction of the original rocket, Howard Hughes secretly builds another and hires Cliff to be the test pilot. When Hughes goes missing, Cliff becomes a suspect and must avoid police while investigating the Nazi underworld still remaining in Los Angeles to find him. Insert outlandish villain. Just off

Well, you know they'd go back and want to remake/reboot this gem. It's a wonderfully pulpy, modern-day classic. Not a classic in the sense of flawless filmmaking or masterful craftsmanship, but because of how emotionally attached we've become to this wonderful Boy's Own Adventure Writ Large tale. I have to agree completely with anomaly7 about how hard it will be to capture that lightning in a bottle, that combination of charm and kitsch that defined the first film so well. At any rate, I hope

I'm on the fence on this one. The 1990s version of The Rocketeer is a classic for me. It got everything right, especially the musical score and the lovely songs from Melora Hardin. If done right, the remake/reboot could be on the same level as Joe Johnston's version.

Sure

I'd like to see another Rocketeer film, just don't change the costume. It was perfect in the original film and identical to the original comic.

the child in me just orgasmed...

and I know how that title I made sounds dangerously gross. I have always wanted to see a reboot of this. The Rocketeer was one of my favorite films when I was a kid. When I was so little, I always wanted the suit and jet pack. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. To see a reboot is to see my childhood come back. I am very excited if this actually happens.

OK....Why Not?

Let me say this first. I love the Rocketeer comics and adored the movie.

That being said, I would not mind another version of the movie. Granted, it would be hard to top the players in the original, but this doesn't have to be a remake does it? I'm ready for more Rocketeer and I'll meet you all down at the Bulldog Cafe.

I'd prefer it be a TV series. There are so many potential stories. The only thing I don't want to see is another "origin of". I thought Thomas McDonell would be a good Cliff.

The Rocketeer is a movie from my childhood that cherish. I love every part of it; the characters, the actors, the story, the costumes, the visual style, and the score is one of my favorites. With that said, I'm not philosophically opposed to rebooting the film (although I've come to hate the word "reboot"), I just don't know how they could hope to improve upon such a great cult classic. To this day, I still look forward to the scene where the Nazis are getting away in their zeppelin, and it

To this day, I still look forward to the scene where the Nazis are getting away in their zeppelin, and it looks like the good guys have lost, then Paul Sorvino looks up at The Rocketeer, gun in hand and framed against a billowing American flag and says 'Go get em' kid!" How do you reboot that?
