Disney may be following the Marvel strategy with LucasFilm by releasing 2 or 3 Star Wars movies every year!

11.15.2012

So, before you lose your minds with that headline, remember that we have spent the last 35 years with a total of 6 movies, 2 Ewoks movies, 1 Holiday Special, 1 animated movie and 2 animated series. Add to that all of the comic books and official novels and there is more than enough material for what Disney has planned.

Up until now, we were under the impression that we would be getting a new STAR WARS movie every 2-3 years, starting with STAR WARS: EPISODE VII in 2015. Well, according to the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, LucasFilm head Kathleen Kennedy says that Disney is planning for something more like two or three STAR WARS movies every year!

This means that we would could potentially see the Skywalker timeline as the main series (think THE AVENGERS) while also getting extended universe movies that build up to each main film (think THOR, IRON MAN, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY). This means we could see the Zahn trilogy become a reality or we could be talking Knights of the Old Republic. 2-3 movies a year means we could see all of those dream directors helming their own bit of the series. We could get darker, adult STAR WARS, animated ones for the kids, the mind boggles at the possibilities!

And no, we can not have too much STAR WARS. Marvel has got their shit in order and the movies are getting better and better. Why can;t STAR WARS be the same way?

So, buckle up everyone, because there is a lot of Jedi goodness coming our way!

I understand your point of view. But they could be over saturating the market much like Star Trek did. Plus with Marvel, you have established characters. With Star Wars, your going to have to develop a lot of new ones. I think this is much more risky then with Marvel. But I'm optimistic and it will be fun to see how it all plays out.

OOOOOOOH!!!

I actually hope this is true. I would much rather they expand the Star Wars universe rtaher than stick to the the one story/timeline which we already know. This is encouraging news.

No thank you

The Avengers Universe works because they are completely different characters that come from their own different setting. Each character and each movie is different.

Star Wars has always been one storyline. Many characters but one central plot. Keep the movies how they are. 3 films released 3 years apart from each other. Then wait a decade and do it again. It's that simple. Yes we are thinking years and years, but this keeps the franchise fresh enough and focused enough to keep going. I'm

The Star Wars films have been one story line, but like that guy said there is way more. I think it would be great to see Han's adventures with Chewbaca that came before A New Hope, but since thats impossible, why not new (hopefully cool) characters instead? The potential is limitless. I dont understand how fans off Star Wars or just this genre of film can complain at all. If they're great movies, yes please.

Look into the novels and the comics.. theirs a ton of source material to pull stories and characters from. The only people who would be worried by this are those that have only seen the 6 movies.

This sounds great. They just need to establish some characters that would warrant their own spin off. I'm guessing they will start introducing them to us to in episode 7, Jaycen, Jayna and Anakin being the 1st I assume.

Correction

Hey Alex - there have been 4 animated series (Ewoks, Droids, Tartakovsky Clone Wars and the current Clone Wars). You may have mean 1 animated Movie (The Clone Wars) or forgot it all together.

Eh, I'll believe it when I see it. I think we'll get the sequel trilogy (eps 7-9) which will take us to 2021, then after that I could see Disney going the more serial, expanded universe route with a movie every 2 years or so (like James Bond). Unless they are counting animated direct-to-bluray or VOD series, I just don't see 2 or 3 live action movies happening in the same year. Too much $$$ to promote that and too much competition with yourself. Star Wars is not Marvel. It'll be oversaturation

Please be true!

So instead of appealing just to one audience, Disney can appeal to several. I would love a darker Star Wars that focuses on the underworld of Coruscant just as much as I'd love for them to focus on the Skywalker family. It's the best of both worlds.

Tread carefully Kathleen Kennedy

Marvel's strategy works for Marvel thanks in large part to the fact that their movies are set for the most part in the real world. 6 weeks of location shooting in New York, LA, Cleveland and half of principal photography is in the can. And because the stories they're telling are so strong, we forgive the fact that the visuals are fairly mainstream and a few corners get cut here and there on special effects.

With Star Wars, I expect things to be a bit grander. Extravagant sets, strange new worlds, perfectly refined visual effects. Lord of the Rings big. Avatar big. You know...Star Wars big.

If they have a strategy whereby they can pursue a main trilogy with that level of grandeur, and then tell side stories (say a Boba Fett movie, an Alderaan movie, a Rogue Squadron movie) without sacrificing production value...they certainly have my attention.

You are basically agreeing with me. The original Star Wars trilogy, with its on-location shoots in unforgiving terrain like Tunisia, Guatemala, glacial Norway...were exactly that. Grand. Star Wars was never more visceral and gorgeous than the sweeping vistas of 'Hoth.' Each was a long, arduous production. To say nothing of the massive sets that had to be built and painstaking detail that went into every model and prop and creature design.

A real Star Wars film...done like the Original

A real Star Wars film...done like the Original trilogy but with modern technology...should effectively come with all the challenges of making a Lord of the Rings film, a James Bond film, and a David Lean epic combined. And I'd certainly want to see a new trilogy push the envelope visually, incorporating IMAX cameras and the best motion capture has to offer. And if 3D is the choice I'd prefer Avatar-quality over the awful post-conversion jobs Marvel makes extra millions with. You don't just crank two or three of those out a year.

Oh please, just because the prequels were all completely cg backgrounds doesn't mean everything going forward has to be. that is one thing that makes the original series so good. Location shots; everything doesn't have to bee grand. Tattooine was not grand, neither was hoth or endor. also when it came to aliens the guys is suits and well crafted puppets work better than some cg character that you can tell isn't there, although for the record the Marvel movies do it quite well. Asgard was beautiful. But think "Pans Labyrinth" or the hellboy movies. Yes they use cg as well but more to enhance and some of the more larger than life characters. I'm not anti cg but you dont always have to have some immense cg landscape with a hundred things going on in the background. Back to basics!

I hope they consider the force unleashed as a possible. It presents a very interesting mid way point between the start of the first trilogy and the end of the prequel trilogy. Even if they only do the first game alone as a movie it will make for one hell of an interesting movie. At the very least there are some very epic moments in that game that would make for interesting movie moments. .

Let's be clear -- that's not what she said.

She said "I want to make two or three FILMS per year." Those could be SW movies, Indiana Jones movies, one of their other properties, or something totally new. Look at Lucasfilm's history & you'll see a bunch of non-SW movies... "Tucker", "Radioland Murders", "Willow", "Twice Upon a Time"....

Awesome Poster. Where'd it come from?

At most I would say 1 movie a year, like what Pixar does, to maintain the quality of the material. However, I have no problem with waiting 2-3 years between films and focusing on 1 film series. If Disney has extra money to throw around, how about a Star Wars tv series aimed at older fans.

not to nitpick but there were 3 animated series'.1-droids 2-clone wars twice although the superior one is more a miniseries. and yes I would love to have a new animated series in the same vein as the first clone wars series. those guys did star wars so well.

OLD REPUBLIC - NEW JEDI ORDER - THRAWN TRILOGY

I'm all for Star Wars overload. An Old Republic series of movies. New Jedi Order series on TV and especially The Thrawn Trilogy. With so much source materil, the possibilities are nearly endless. But let's face, spinoff cute cartoons for kids are great but the real meat and potatoes is serious space operas with massive and small space pitch battles that Lucas started is the way to go. All of this being PG-13 and very loud and 3D of course. I could see 2 or 3 Star Wars movies per year

The average attention span can handle it and the fanboy base would eat it up like milk duds and popcorn.
On a personal note, I have to love all this speculation that's going. Everyone guessing what the hell is going. No one knows for sure. The meetings at Disney must be nuts with all the strategic discussions about what should be done and what will be done. We can only hang back and wait and see and hope that the things we want to see regarding Star Wars come to fruition.

BRING IT ON!!! Like thembones just said, they can have different sagas going on every two years , make episodes 7, 8 and 9 and still have something like the Old Republic if they want. At this point I don't even care which stories they cover I'm just excited we are getting more Star Wars and lots of it.

Lets worry about profit and forget the artistry...

This is crazy. This is pure studio greed. I'm a Star Wars fanatic who can't wait for a new trilogy but how can quality control be maintained over 2-3 films per year?! It can't. It will only saturate Star Wars' legacy further with below standard films being pumped out like burgers. We've already experienced Episode 1, do we want more? Not me. I'm happy for one film every 2-3 years but certainly not 3-4 months. And the thought of doing different genres of Star Wars films? The kid orientated

As a fan who relied on the Expanded Universe books and comics to get me through while the prequels nearly ruined everything this is GREAT NEWS!!! I'm also calling an embargo on dissing Alex Maidy, I can't hate on a fellow Star Wars fan just because I don't always agree with the guy. This also makes it so everyone may actually get their favorite director to tackle a story or two. Maybe Kevin Smith will get his time travel Boba Fett movie after all (I realize that last sentence is going to cause

...........

Star Wars is a precious franchise to many, and for good reasons. Mainly because a generation was exposed to 3 movies, then were left wanting more for years.. then we were given 3 more.. Granted not as great on some levels but on others equal and better. However this was spread out over time, and the story line was exciting to see Darth Vader grow and evolve. Now we are about to bombarded with Star Wars, its wow factor about to be faded, the story will loose depth, and not held as a precious

The actual quote in EW is "Lucasfilm’s co-chairman and soon-to-be president, Kathleen Kennedy, has told employees she wants the company to produce two or three films a year (it’s averaged fewer than four per decade), and first up is Star Wars: Episode VII for 2015." So that could mean other films relating to the LucasfFilm/LucasArts library, not just Star Wars. Monkey Island could make a cool franchise. I would not be a fan of 2-3 Star Wars films per year. That would be saturation and take

They should try getting one or two new movies right before they start coming out with statements like this.
It's like they've jumped past the milking the Star Wars cash cow straight to pulling the damn udders off.

more star wars is a good thing

if they focus on a building up to a "main" Skywalker movie by expanding on other characters, I would be ok with that, I worry about watering down the STAR WARS franchise.... and I would love to see more animated STAR WARS movies and series... I'm talking the Samurai Jack style 2d hand drawn shit and not the wacky funky 3d shit that has some god-awful character designs.... more mature anime... like GOTHAM KNIGHTS or the MArvel movies would be nice.
