Disney may be releasing the remaining 3D Star Wars prequels in 2014

Nov. 27, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Whether you are one of the few clinging to the hopes that STAR WARS: EPISODE VII will not be in 3D, this latest news may be one of the final nails in that coffin. Last year when Disney acquired Lucasfilm for four billion dollars, they cancelled the impending release of both ATTACK OF THE CLONES and REVENGE OF THE SITH after THE PHANTOM MENACE underwhelmed at the box office. It seemed like those would never see the theatrical light of day, but it appears that may be changing.

JediNews reports that a fan in the Netherlands found a listing for both films to hit theaters on December 31, 2014. Now, I know from my days working in retail that having a release date at the end of a future year like that typically is a placeholder when no other date is known is common practice. However, this sounds like a new listing which could mean a 2014 release is pending. Why would Disney do this?

Well, it makes logical sense since the post-conversion is completed on the two remaining prequels and you have to assume they want all of the new films to use the upcharge format as well. J.J. Abrams was against doing the conversion for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS but he may not be able to fight it from happening with STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. Disney has way too much money invested in Lucasfilm to not milk it for every penny. It sucks, but it is a business reality.

While the 3D re-releases may or may not happen, I would expect that they would hit screens sometime in 2014 and possibly early 2015 to lead up to the release of STAR WARS: EPISODE VII.

J.J. Abrams spoke to MTV about the new release date for his foray into George Lucas' universe and he had this to say about it.

"I will say that it is an infinitely better situation now than when they were saying they wanted it in the summer. Before I even came onto the project, before I was brought on -- they were talking about 2015 and they made this announcement very early on. Which I understand, and I understand why they'd want that -- but it didn't necessarily have anything to do with the reality of where anyone was creatively. So I think that it's a hugely important thing that that come first, and a release date is great, but you have to release something great. So to me, the new release date is a huge improvement."

That still doesn't sound like an ideal scenario for Abrams, but I doubt he is going to argue his way out of this directing gig. Hopefully it all works out as we have been theorizing, but I doubt any of us will know for sure until the first production photos and trailers are released.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII hits screens on December 18, 2015.

Wouldn't it be cool to live in a world where we were excited for such re-releases? I mean, like, take out the 3D. Just a re-release in the theater? I'd still pay money to see Episodes 4-6 in a movie theater in their original form if it was playing down the road. Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm still bitter about 1-3. If there's actually such thing as a necessary remake, it's 1-3. Maybe if 7-9 knock the ball out of the park, people would consider such a thing possible

Re-releasing Episode I made sense, since it was the first of the prequel trilogy and significant as the last major film release of the 20th century. Nobody gives a shit about the other two (well maybe RotS, but it wouldn't make sense to release one and not the other).

Give fans what they really want, the originals. Throw in some behind-the-scenes footage/preview material from Episode VII as incentive and they will become cash juggernauts.

I did find it hillarious that George Lucas' final crime against Star Wars fans was

that he tricked people in to seeing The Phantom Menace again.

I would rather see Abrams return to Star Trek and finish the trilogy and what he started.

YES, I'M IN THE MINORITY BUT I DON'T CARE

I say bring on all the past and future SW movies in 3D. The 3D medium is awesome and even though I pretty much loathed Phantom, I still went and managed to find a level entertainment. Albeit, it was pretty much the pod race that did it for the me and was pretty much the movie. I see Clones as being about the same with Sith being pretty cool, especially the duel. And really, how cool is the trench going to be in 3D in A New Hope. Empire will have it's cool 3D moments and Jedi will of

If you take a close look at all the movies, the 3D moments will have their redeeming qualities. Furthermore, if they are released properly, they can lead right up to Chapter 7 and everyone will be caught up. This may have been Lucas' underlying plan since we've come to find out he was looking into Ep.7. Stick with the 3D plan, Thank you.

I think the 3D versions of the films should just be released on blu-ray, like the upcoming 3D version of Predator.

Awesome

I was excited about this originally. Bringing it back will only make it better.

I can't believe people actually think this is a good idea.

I just want to see the original trilogy in theaters again...

I don't care about the horrible prequel trilogy, I want New Hope, Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi in theaters. I don't care 3D or not, Star Wars needs to be in theaters more often. I am sick of seeing movies like Grease (no offense, I like that movie too) come to theaters ever couple years and yet Star Wars comes out maybe once every 10 years.

so dumb.....

Who gives a shite....best thing to do with the prequels is quietly pretend like they never happened....and all will be well...but no they can't do that because it just shows that they are not smart. so what that they already have them converted to 3D....that doesn't mean they will make any money from them....OH YEAH I FORGOT THEY WILL....THEY WILL RELEASE IT IN THE THEATERS FOR A WEEK JUST TO ADVERTISE THE 3D BLURAYS....DUH...NOW I GET IT....WELL GOOD FOR THEM...MAKE SOME MONEY BACK...NOT FROM

Oh and for the people who want to see the original trilogy in the theaters again....omg the blurays are fantastic on a big screen hdtv.....i watch them every few months or so...with Empire getting the most played of course....Seriously, every scene in Empire is a piece of ART...EVERY SCENE!!
