Disney now developing a Cruella de Ville film, simply titled Cruella

09.30.2013

Well, I hope you like live-action Disney movies based on the original animated classics, because the studio isn't letting up on their newfound passion for them. Disney is turning cartoon characters into live-action goldmines one after another, which began of late with Tim Burton's ALICE IN WONDERLAND and is transitioning to Angelina Jolie's MALEFICENT in May 2014 and then to Kenneth Branagh's CINDERELLA in March 2015. After that, it appears that another classic Disney villain will be going live action - again - as Cruella De Ville is set to make another appearance in her own film, simply titled CRUELLA, which is being penned by CINDERELLA writer Aline Brosh McKenna.

Original live-action Cruella De Ville, Glenn Close, who portrayed the character in 101 DALMATIONS and it's sequel 102 DALMATIONS, will serve as executive producer on the solo film. The character was first introduced in the 1961 animated film of 101 DALMATIONS and is noted for her "two-face" esque appearance and penchant for stealing dalmation puppies. It's interesting that Disney is placing so much confidence in their female-driven heroines and villains from past animated films, but it feels like one of the safest gambles they could take. I mean, you've got five-decades worth of momentum for these characters; I'd say that improves your odds of a feature version taking off.

No word on story details or release date on CRUELLA, but consider yourself warned. The Disney vault is opening up and about to flood you with live-action cartoon adaptations.

Can't top Glenn Close or the original animated film

so don't even bother trying.

Live-action movies? I'm really surprised Disney Publishing allowed the PERCY JACKSON series to go to Fox. There's a good adaptation of that series out there, but Fox is pretty much screwing that one up by the numbers.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST would make a great live-action movie: spin it darker and use elements of Robin McKinley's book BEAUTY, where the heroine discovers her own beauty while saving the Beast.

As for BLACK CAULDRON, there were so many

As for BLACK CAULDRON, there were so many problems with that production: Jeffrey Katzenberg demanding 10 minutes taken off the running time (it didn't matter where) and various departments billing the production for work that had nothing to do with the movie.

but they've already done this in the aforementioned 101 & 102 Dalmatians. All due respect to Jeff Daniels and the rest of the cast but Glenn Close owned those movies.

Extra Tidbit

I always thought someone could make a really cool live action Aladdin movie. Something like the Mummy (1999 version) but with flying carpets and a genie. I'd pay to see that.

Ehh, it will be pretty much impossible to beat Glenn Close's take on the character. The two live-action Dalmatian flicks weren't great, but Close was a perfect hammy Cruella and clearly having the time of her life.

Still pissed David Fincher's '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' got shelved.

Extra Tidbit: How about a live action treatment of 'Black Cauldron?'

Dude, as soon as Disney dropped the Narnia series I said that their best, most obvious choice to cash in on the live-action fantasy boom (this was when stuff like Spiderwick Chronicles and Stardust were still popping up left and right) would be to do a live action Prydain series. For those who don't know, The Black Caldron was one of Disney's few animated films that was both a critical and financial bomb, it was also a very loose adaptation of the first two book in a 1960's YA fantasy series

The only way you can get me in a seat is a live action Gaston movie.

Or hell, I'll take a Stromboli movie, too.
