Disney officially announces Star Wars: Episode VII's release in December 2015

Nov. 7, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Well, we now have an official confirmation from Disney that STAR WARS: EPISODE VII will be hitting theaters on December 18, 2015. That means that, as predicted, Disney will completely monopolize the entire schedule that year with AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, ANT-MAN, and STAR WARS: EPISODE VII amongst their normal slate of animated films.

J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm lobbied for a delay to 2016 to provide more time for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII to be developed. Disney CEO Bob Iger was set on releasing the movie in 2015 and apparently December is the perfect compromise to appease everyone. Now Abrams gets time to develop the film further as he scripts with Lawrence Kasdan and Iger and the suits are still getting their new tentpole right in time for the holiday season.

Disney chair Alan Horn issued the following statement via Star Wars.com:

"We're very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture,"

Nice compromise Disney. They could've given JJ and Kathleen Kennedy 5 years and there still would've been scheduling dramas. This is the best way to make everyone happy. They have over 2 full years now and a finished story, which should be plenty of time.

Wow, first Star Wars movie not to be featured in May. Probably needed additional time due to production delays. Which, by how it sounds, isn't perfect- but will suffice. Good to see JJ stressing on making a quality film.

Why does it feel so far away?

Star Wars needs this new blood to be awesome. You cant rush quality period. I have faith in JJ and his team and as a die hard fan I am excited for the creative help being offered by the brain behind EMPIRE. Casting is very important and I am holding my breath for some hopefully good news on who will play what. Disney is literally trying to monopolize certain genres these days and I respect their aggressive approach but they need to take the time to do things right. This is no half assed

It's legendary and important to people. Make us love it!

Guaranteed to be a surefire hit, but...

...I just can't get excited about this movie. Hiring a controversial director, writers getting fired, the studio refusing to push back the release date even though the writers feel it's being rushed, bringing back old characters rather than moving forward, plans to release new Star Wars movies every. other. year. It's the summation of all these things that just makes me really doubt how good this will end up being. It's like the movie can't get out of it's own way. It's still very early to make

So basically...

Disney just announced to the Universe that nobody should dare release a film from December 18th through Christmas if you hope to make a buck at the box office.

It isn't the first time a Star Wars property was released in the Holidays....

....I guarantee it'll be just as good considering who's in the director's chair! Can't wait for that nostalgic feeling of seeing old actors reprising their role like Nemoy did in Star Trek, or the surefire way they'll invite us back into the Star Wars galaxy like how JJ gave us completely new and original content when he got the helm of Star Trek. Can you POSSIBLY imagine how he'd handle Vader, Palpatine or Maul the way he did Khan? I'm sure it'll be something no one will be prepared for.

I was 10 years old when I went to see Episode 1 on opening day. I was too young to be discerning back then so I had a blast. Now I'll be heading back to the theaters at 27, now jaded by eps. I,II and III, but all the more ready for the next run through.

Practical

With May becoming Marvel month it makes sense to keep The Avengers: Age of Ultron where it belongs and moving Star Wars where it will likely have little to no competition and rack in the holiday money that Avatar got its hands on.

And that's calling it low...haters and fans will see this no matter what. Its like a car crash to some and the second coming for others. Part of me hopes it won't push out any of the records set by Lucas though...

It's always been a tradition for Star Wars films to open on Memorial Day weekend, but I guess if JJ Abrams needs the few extra months, he should have them.

But the Disney Exec's said it would come out in May 2015...

J.J. Abrams: "I am ALTERING the release date...*Pray* I don't alter it any further."

Not going to lie, I wish they just pushed it back to May 2016. Star Wars just feels like it should be released during the summer, like it always has. Two years ago most people figured the saga was over and we wouldn't get another movie, so I'm sure waiting 6 more months would be ok. But I guess it doesn't matter, I'll be there opening night either way.

Tradition is trumped by greed. Apparently they didn't learn anything from the morals of the prequels...too bad there isn't some snot nosed soon to be Sith lord out there capable of blowing up the Disney Federation's Capital Ship.

Appropriately put, as both films will be of similar quality and were made primarily as a cash grab.
