Disney planning movie based on Enchanted Tiki Room attraction?

Nov. 9, 2010by: Mike Sampson

Disney has had mixed success developing movies based on their popular theme park attractions. There was, of course, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and then on the other end of the spectrum, THE COUNTRY BEARS. But that's not stopping them from continuing the process with JUNGLE CRUISE, HAUNTED MANSION, 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, TOMORROWLAND and MAGIC KINGDOM all in various forms of development. Now, might you be able to add another project to that list?

The studio has picked up the spec script TIKI from writers Ahmet Zappa and Michael Wilson, a film that's based in the world of Polynesian mythology. While Disney says the script isn't specifically based on Enchanted Tiki Room, the popular Disneyland attraction it's hard to not see the similarities. Also while that spec may not have necessarily been based on the attraction, I find it hard to believe Disney will develop the project without branding it after an existing (and popular) property.

The Zappa/Wilson script is set in Hawaii and makes use of the culture's masks and ghost stories. Should the project be retrofitted to a ENCHANTED TIKI ROOM movie, expect a new version of the classic Sherman Bros. song "The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room."

Extra Tidbit: The Tiki Room was the first ever use of Audio Animatronics, now a standard in theme parks.

Hire Johnny Depp!

The ONLY reason the Pirates movies are watchable (or have made any money) is because of Johnny Depp's outstanding characterization. If that had been played straight by any other actor the first film would have sunk like a shipwrecked galleon. Disney doesn't seem to understand this (look at Haunted Mansion). The Pirates franchise was a TOTAL FLUKE because of Depp. It is NOT a repeatable phenomenon with every Disney ride/attraction that you can name. Is Walt turning over in his grave yet?

The best thing about this: maybe we'll get the original Tiki Room back at Disney World and get rid of the lousy "Under New Management" crap that's there now.

Okay, can we remember . . .

. . . that "20,000 Leagues" was a ride based on a BOOK, that the upcoming remake (as was the original movie) is based on a BOOK, NOT A RIDE?

Kind of like, "How The Grinch Stole Christmas", with Jim Carrey. I worked in a book store at the time that movie came out, and there were tons of childrens movie spinoff books representing the movie. So, in sense they were books, based on a movie, based on an animated movie, based on a book.....

I think the attraction has potential. It will suck if they make it a live action film though. They need to make it animated and let PIXAR oversee it. It would be sweet to see it done in a 2D animation style like that poster above but I doubt we will get that.It would be a good way to go back into 2D musicals for Disney. I feel like they will try modernizing it and fuck it up though. But hopefully it will contribute to getting rid of Iago and Zazu in the Disney World attraction.

i loved 20,000 leagues

as a kid one of my favorites kirk douglas and shit

this childhood obsession was further fostered by the fact that maybe the best ride at disney was the 20,000 ride

the last time i went to disney was the last summer it was there

i was saddened by the fact it was dismantled and is now covered by the hunred acre wood(much to the delight of my my all things pooh crazy wife)

i hop the new movie is more like jules vernes classic book than the original but all in all shame on disney for
