Disney unveils Black Panther’s For Your Consideration page

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Of the 17 movies Marvel Studios released prior to this year none of them had truly broken into the Oscar race in a major way. Several of the movies were nominated in the tech categories, but like many comic book movies, they failed to make it into the top-tier slots. That all may change with BLACK PANTHER, one of the best reviewed and the highest-grossing (domestically) superhero movie ever made. Disney is going all out on their campaign to get PANTHER into the race, and they have unveiled their “For Your Consideration” page for the flick.

In short, Disney wants all the Oscars. Aside from Best Actress and the animation, short film and documentary categories, Disney is vying for consideration in all Oscar slots. This includes a Best Actor nom for Chadwick Boseman, Best Supporting nominations for Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o and other cast members and, of course, Best Picture.

You can look at the full list below:

We’ve known the studio would be vying for some Oscars for a while now, with its prospects becoming evident when the movie opened to universal acclaim and went on to earn $700 million domestically, making it the third-highest grossing movie of all time in North America. Even when the Oscars’ much-maligned “Best Popular Movie” category was announced, Boseman held firm that they would be gunning for the big-ticket nomination of Best Picture. Luckily that's not an issue anymore after the category was recently dumped from this year's ceremony.

If you go onto the Disney Awards page (in the source link) it seems like the company is getting a head start on the awards season, and though they will likely seek nominations for movies like AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and THE INCREDIBLES 2, they are putting a lot of eggs into the PANTHER basket. Indeed, this movie has the best chance of any blockbuster they’ve released recently to snag major nominations, so why not go all out? The movie for sure has some tech categories in the bag, but at this point, I would be a tad surprised if it was shunned for Best Picture.
