Disney will turn an iconic Fantasia sequence into a live-action film

06.03.2015

They just keep coming; at this rate I wouldn't be surprised if Disney had announced a live-action remake for every single one of their animated films by the end of the year. THR reports that the latest Disney film to undergo live-actionification will...not actually be a film at all, but rather the studio is developing a live-action film based upon The Night on Bald Mountain segment from its 1940 musical classic FANTASIA.

Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless are on board to write the script for the adaptation and will also produce. If you're looking for examples of their work, the pair scripted last year's DRACULA UNTOLD and were joined by Cory Goodman for the upcoming Vin Diesel flick, THE LAST WITCH HUNTER. Sources say that the adaptation will be of a similar vein to what Disney did on MALEFICENT. It will be interesting to see how they plan on transforming the eleven minute segment into a feature, but I suppose it's been done with less in the past.

This isn't the first time that pieces of FANTASIA has been mined for live-action adaptations; the Nicolas Cage film THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE was inspired by the FANTASIA sequence by the same name. The FANTASIA live-action film will join the many other live-action Disney films which are in various stages of development, including BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, THE JUNGLE BOOK, DUMBO, MULAN, PINOCCHIO, WINNIE THE POOH, JACK AND THE BEANSTALK, and TINKERBELL. Phew.

Extra Tidbit: FANTASIA is one of my favourite Disney films and I have vivid memories of The Night on Bald Mountain sequence scaring the pants off me when I was young. Here's hoping that the live-action film will terrify a new generation of children.

Sigh...Disney

Yeah this is a much better idea than just doing a new Fantasia movie; which was intended to be a running series, Or you know a new Tron movie. /s

I'm just surprised Universal is the studio developing a live action take on The Little Mermaid (the one Sofia Coppola recently departed) instead of Disney. That would be the no-brainer one to do live action take on in my eyes.

If they went for a live-action Hieronymus Bosch's Last Judgement, that would be about in line with what a feature-length of Night on Bald Mountain would probably be like, with a little bit of Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow thrown in.

I surprisingly didn't hate Dracula Untold, at least as a stand-alone movie. And it was surprisingly gory for a PG-13. Anyway, I want to see this done justice as a truly dark, demonic story. And I wouldn't even care about the Christian symbolism as long as it

First I have to say those animators where flyin high on some type of drug. Secondly whats this going to be about some demons masturbatory activities at night, not a big appeal with the children. Although the heavy handed christian symbolism at the end my reach the pedophiles in the religious sectors.

Somebody at Disney can't keep a secret

I feel like after the success of Maleficent, Disney had a meeting where they hashed out a ton of ideas and created exploratory groups to figure out which of these movies is the best bet. So far all that is officially coming out is "Jungle Book" and "Beauty and the Beast" (plus Alice in Wonderland 2, ugh). Nothing else has release dates, writers, or directors. So lets assume that Disney releases one of these movies every year, that would mean they have things planned out to 2025. I know Marvel

I know Marvel has that kind of time frame, but it's more complicated and they havent announced anything past 2019.

Which leads me to believe that someone at Disney is a blabbermouth. They may have plans to make these movies, but no studio would announce a film they plan on doing 10 years in advance. We have no idea which of these 8 movies will show up in 2018, if any of them. It could very well be something they havent announced yet.

If it has to be done ...

but please, please, please, Disney: don't go the MALEFICENT route and make Chernabog the hero. Let this villain stay a (really fucking scary) villain. A Hard R would also be appreciated. Thank you.

i agree that Chernabog should stay the bad ass villain he is, and while i would love to see a Hard-R version, i seriously doubt Disney would do that. It has the fantasia name on it, automatically making it towards kids. Best we can hope for is a soft PG13
