Disney's Mary Poppins sequel gets an official title and release date

Mary Poppins returns to the big screen in time for the holidays of 2018.

No, wait... We already knew she was coming back, but the return I'm talking about is right smack in the official title Disney has given to the Mary Poppins sequel that'll star Emily Blunt in the title role as the legendary nanny - MARY POPPINS RETURNS. And The Mouse has picked December 25, 2018 for the film's release date, because they know what they're doing when it comes to prying money out of your wallet around the holidays for their product. (They're pros at that sort of thing.)

Rob Marshall is behind the camera and HAMILTON star Lin-Manuel Miranda enters the Poppins-verse - it's all expanded universes these days - to play a street lamplighter named Jack that'll factor into the story and, for sure, have at least one musical number assigned to him to showcase Miranda's talents.

As for that story...

Drawing from the wealth of material in P.L. Travers’ seven additional novels, the story will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

Mary Poppins seems primed and ready for the re-quel treatment when you take into account how successful the principle "everything old becoming new again" has been lately with Disney right at the center of it working. Now we have some concrete details on how and when The Mouse intends to add this one to their win column.

Mary Poppins vs Avatar 2???? So when does the Han Solo movie come out?

If James Cameron does indeed film his 4 Avatar sequels, he will be running head to head vs Mary Poppins. That, I believe, is a much more favorable matchup for him than any Stat Wars flick. I kind of expected the Han Solo Anthology film to be released around Christmas 2018, but I doubt the House of Mouse would run interference with one of their big tentpole releases. So, Han Solo movie in Summer 2018, November????

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

I feel I may be better qualified as I can still say the above word backwards after decades since memorizing it, but since I'm much too old I'm perfectly happy to let Emily Blunt take my place. :D. This is going to be fantastic and the story sounds really good! I'm glad it's another story and not the original, and that it still takes place in the same era. Love Julie Andrews and Emily is a perfect replacement. She's my favorite actress right now.

Not a reboot. Same time era. And starring Emily Blunt as Poppins. Count me in.

"...enters the Poppins-verse - it's all expanded universes these days enters the Poppins-verse - it's all expanded universes these days..." Haha good article, and also sadly true.

I realize that I am in no way the target audience for this but I'm excited for it nonetheless. Emily Blunt is one of the two or three actors I most want to see break out and become the A-lister she so deserves to be, and she really seems like she's right on the cusp of it. It kind of amazes me that Disney never

It kind of amazes me that Disney never made a sequel back in the day, although I guess that wasn't really a thing for them in the 50's. Still, after how much money and attention "Saving Mr. Banks" made a few years back, it seems like the market is primed and ready for this.

I assume the next Star Wars spinoff will hit the week before, I just find it interesting that Disney wants to put this up against it. I'm sure this will do fine, but there would be loads of other times to put it. Like a few weeks before Star Wars.

I agree, but its not competing with Star Wars. Parents will still take their kids to this movie.

Emily Blunt has some massive shoes to fill

I never saw INTO THE WOODS so I have no idea of her singing ability. But Blunt will need pipes to match Idina Melzel if she's going to make people forget about Julie Andrews.

The comparisons will be inevitable. Andrews' work in the 1965 movie is the dictionary definition of "iconic."

I agree it will be inevitable but Emily is pretty good herself. I don't think either of them reaches Idina Menzel though.

Here's a clip of Emily singing. I think she has a beautiful voice with pretty good range: [link]

Excited for this. Blunt is one of my favorite actress' and I think she is perfect casting for Mary Poppins. And the fact that Rob Marshall is directing as well is exciting since Into The Woods was fantastic.
