Disney's Rapunzel changes its title to Tangled

Feb. 12, 2010by: Niki Stephens

It's been awhile since we've talked any about Disney's RAPUNZEL...wait...they're not calling it that anymore. Now it's cleverly titled, TANGLED.

Producer Roy Conli explains:

Hey everyone, Im Roy Conli, producer of Disneys next animated film. I have some exciting news to share, and it was important to me that YOU guys the Disney fans hear it first. I want to tell you about Walt Disney Animation Studios 2010 release, Tangled. Its a really fresh, smart take on the Rapunzel story. In our film, the infamous bandit Flynn Rider meets his match in the girl with the 70 feet of magical golden hair. Were having a lot of fun pairing Flynn, whos seen it all, with Rapunzel, whos been locked away in a tower for 18 years. Im so proud of the crew working on this film theyre doing a fantastic job creating an awesome story with great characters and a stunning world and its all going to look amazing in 3D. All of us here at the studio are incredibly excited for you to see Tangled when it comes out in theaters this November.

Okay, so it wasn't much of an explanation. Basically I gather that the name change is because of the new take on the Rapunzel story, which is fair. The film is directed by Byron Howard & Nathan Greno and written by Mark Kennedy & Dean Wellins. Mandy Moore will provide the voice for the beautifully blonde, Rapunzel. CHUCK'S Zachary Levi gives his voice to the dashing Flynn Rider.

I'm really quite excited for this film, especially because of the new look they're bringing to it. TANGLED will still use computer animation, but it will have more of the traditional hand drawn look to it. I'm also missing the traditional Disney princess. It doesn't hurt that Alan Menken is doing the music for the film either. I want another "Whole New World". Anyone else excited about this?

Plus, she's a hot animated lady.

Actually Beauty and the Beast would become "FUGLY", "The Little Mermaid" would become "LEGS", "The Lion King" ----> "CLAWS". And "Sleeping Beauty" gets shortened to "YAWN"

By all means, keep "Rapunzel" . . .

. . . and while you're at it, let's change "The Little Mermaid" to "Ariel", "Beauty and the Beast" to "Belle", "The Lion King" to "Simba" . . . catch my drift? Is it gonna kill the movie to not have it titled after the main character? Sheesh.

I'm pretty excited for this one. It's been too long since we've had good Disney animation. (Pixar aside)

Title change

Disney made the change because they want to bring in more boy viewers. Princess and the Frog turned boys away with the title.

This makes it look like it won't be taken as seriously as the other classic animated Disney movies. Stick with Rapunzel.

Tangled?

WTF is TANGLED? Sounds like a bad thriller from the 80s. RAPUNZEL was a great title....not sure why Disney made this change...
