District 9 trailer!

05.01.2009

After lots of waiting (the promo campaign for this movie began last year at Comic-Con), we finally have our first look at footage from the Peter Jackson produced DISTRICT 9.

The beginning of this new trailer is very similar, if not identical, to the footage we saw in ShoWest but where that veered off into explaining a little bit more about the plot. Sadly here an intriguing premise and a possibly cool money shot is pixelated. I understand what they were going for here (the alien is going on-record and his face is being covered to protect his identity) but why not give audiences a better look at our alien to better whet their appetite for this film? I'm still excited for it either way but I think a great "alien shot" at the end of this trailer would've sealed the deal. You can check out the latest D9 trailer below or head to Apple's trailer page to see it in HD.

Awesome

Looks great. Also, the alien's face is most likely blurred out because it's a broadcast signal (being put on TVs either in the interrogation room or people's homes) and the alien's eyes can't be looked into directly. It's something from Neill's short film "Alive in Joburg" where all the aliens had their eyes blurred on camera, or were forced to wear sunglasses. Look it up.

Cool

I have seen Blomkamp's shorts and thought they were really good. I can't see this working as a feature mind.
I also agree the interrogation scene looked poor. But I will wait until it comes out and pass judgement then. The face is possibly half mechanic and half CGI so the visuals arenít finished yet maybe.
I still think Blomkamp could be an A-list director in the future.
He just needs a big franchise film like Nolan, to get backing for his ideas and the documentary look he offers.

I have to disagree with anyone who didn't agree with the pixelated face. This IS, after all, a teaser trailer and what better way to tease us than to give us a glimpse of the ship and a glimpse of the alien, sans the face?

I don't know, i mean it seemed like a pretty interesting mockumentary until the interrogation scene. By trailer standers it went on too long, it also made me laugh. which i don't think it was intended to do.

i've seen the short and its decent, not something i would make as feature out of but whatever.

Man I was wondering what f*cking movie this was half way through the trailer... I thought it was some documentry, which... in a way it is but you know what i mean... and then BAM... I think this movie is going to be f*cking incredible. This, Star Trek, HP 6 and TF 2 is going to rock... hopefully T4 will also

If you want to see the alien...

Just do a youtube search for Blomkamp's films.

This is the feature film version of a short he made maybe 4 years ago or something. Any way...

The alien in the trailer is obviously an 'enhanced' version of the aliens in that short. But you'll get the very same general idea of what we're looking at here.

I personally dug the short film, and I'm highly interested in seeing this feature version. It was the short that pretty much nailed him the Halo job to begin with.

CRAPPY FX

Looked ok until the interrogation scene shot. Then I just laughed and the illusion shattered. Why couldn't they just have been actors in cool costume. Anyway, could be ok. But wuda made more sense/power during apartheid.

You do realize Blomkamp and Jackson initially teamed up FOR the Halo movie, right? If District 9 is a success, they will likely try to move toward Halo again. I'm not overlooking the intrigue of District 9; but as a fan of Halo, I can't help but keep my optimism.

Blomkamp

Fucking sweet to finally see Blomkamp's crazy pseudo-documentary alien stories get a high budget theatrical treatment.

Next stop: Halo *pees self*

Music is from...

Cliff Martinez's beautiful and creepy score in "Solaris," one of my favorite sci-fi movies.

Goodness, this looks amazing! I seriously can't wait.

Splice, Moon, Pandorum, Avatar, and now District 9?! Looks like this is officially an awesome year for sci-fi fans!
