Do you want three Marvel movies a year? Another mystery movie set for 2018

Jul. 23, 2014by:

Last week Marvel set dates for five new films through to 2019, I guess they were not done announcing release dates for UNTITLED. Today they have announced that May 4, 2018 will see yet another entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony had previously scheduled THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4 for this new May 4th date, but obviously with the push given THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 earlier today, that’s a no go.

Marvel Studios already had mystery placeholders for films that will be released on July 8, 2016 (following a third CAPTAIN AMERICA film on May 6, 2016) and then another on May 5, 2017. Last week, they set July 28, 2017, November 3, 2017, July 6, 2018, November 2, 2018 and May 3, 2019 for UNTITLED.

Again, here’s one way to look at it:

What this means is, starting in 2017 we might be getting three Marvel movies a year! While the identities of the films are unknown, reports suggest that DOCTOR STRANGE, THOR 3 and THE AVENGERS 3 might fill the dates. It’s Comic-Con week, so I suspect we finally might get some answers.

In the meantime, are you team red or blue?

This is a terrible business model, I have a feeling that this is going to bite Disney in the ass. Seriously, claiming release dates for movies that haven't even been announced yet is fucking ludicrous.

I can't help but wonder if this is in response to DC, since their leaked plan *also* calls for 3 films a year. Good god, starting 2018, all theaters are going to have time to show is superhero movies, star wars, and Avatar sequels

A lot to speculate

Definitely would like 3 a year. Doc Strange, Black Panther and Hulk 2 should be on the list. Thinking Thanos gets all the Infinity gems in Guardians 2 leading to a big blowout in Avengers 3. Warlock should have his own film in between that. Introduction to a number of other characters like Quasar, Jack of Hearts, Watcher, (Will they have their own version of Galactus?)
I'll just leave it to Marvel to announce officially.....

"Do you want three Marvel movies a year?"

Sure... I guess. But only if none of them are written or directed by Joss Whedon. That beaver-faced prick needs to fuck off already with his "brilliant" dialogue and storylines.

So long as the decision is driven by creativity as well as money I welcome it.

Maybe this new movie is Black Panther after John Boyega's tweet earlier? Still want to see Chiwetel Ejiofor in the role but Boyega has grown on me as my #2 choice since thinking about it today. It's used as kind of a joke like Nathan Fillion for every role but I am so pissed that Idris Elba can't play T'Challa just like I'm pissed Sam Rockwell couldn't have played Ant-Man or Dr. Strange but at least they didn't waste Elba like they did Rockwell as a crappy version of Justin Hammer...if they

OK I'm good with all my casting thoughts now!

Team Red. My assumptions:

07/09/16 is Doctor Strange.
05/05/17 is a Hulk film.
7/28/17 is Guardians 2.
11/3/17 would be Thor 3. They've gotta give him a part 3 eventually, given his box office numbers are pretty similar to Cap.
05/04/18 = Avengers 3 (and thank GOD they announced this... I thought we'd have to wait 4 years between Avengers films).
7/6/18 would be a new film. They wouldn't follow Avengers with a sequel (I know that was the case with IM3 but that was a year later, this is 2 months). Maybe it'd be

11/2/18 and 5/3/19, no idea.
Who agrees and can help me fill the gaps here?

actually, Winter Soldier opened at $10 million higher than Thor 2 and did about $60 million better domestically. both had a budget of $170 million, so Winter Solider was about a 35% better return on investment. those are pretty substantial numbers.

i like how you just assume stuff though.

@TAE K

Cap did about 10% better on worldwide numbers, but Thor 2 still pulled in almost 650 million. Plenty of cash to warrant a third installment.

I hope to God DC does not go this route. This is already overly obnoxious and exhausted. Can't they see that the faster and the more they spew out the more awful and careless these scripts and films get.

If they are suddenly announcing one more now, just as the very happy first reactions are pouring in from The Guardians of the Galaxy...maybe it is Guardians 2 claiming it's place.

A Question

I wonder. Will Marvel do smaller projects at least once per year? Three movies is a lot. An Avengers, Dr. Strange, or Iron Man movie must take considerable capital to make. Marvel would make perhaps one or two such "blockbusters" per year. The studio's other wide releases might be smaller projects that do not have six-figure budgets. These other movie projects probably will not be the same titles as on TV: SHIELD, Daredevil, Heroes for Hire, and Jessica Jones. What could these projects be?

Black Panther might be a mid-budget action-adventure. Moon Knight could be made. Werewolf by Night is a possibility (especially if Marvel wants other stuff than standard superhero fare). The Two-Gun Kid or a Howling Commandos movie would work as a change of pace. Devil-Slayer would go nicely with the upcoming Dr. Strange. Man-Thing deserves another crack at stardom, and his strange tales could occur on-screen if Man-Thing has a budget like the Swamp Thing movies.

BTW, Team Blue. She appears to be a Captain America fan. I am too. She and I should hang-out and discuss comics and politics and stuff.

There is a lot of possibilities, including the chance that the television hero's could be looked at as testing ground for potential movies in the future with the same cast and crew, remember, they all take place in the same universe.
So not including those and The Punisher and Ghost Rider I would say the following are at the top of the list:
-Inhuman (creates more spinoff possibilities)
-solo movies for Hawkeye, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, but I assume 1 or 2 of those would be

-West Coast Avengers
-Sub Mariner
-Nova
-Runaways
-Captain Marvel and Mrs. Marvel
-Wonder Man (LOL if he gets a movie before Wonder Woman)
-Ka Zar
-Thunderbolts
-Sentry
-Quasar
-Adam Warlock
-New Warriors

I would LOVE a thunderbolts, but it'd require the characters that are both good and bad (as far as characters that already exist in the MCU right now I can only really see Loki - it'd be a good vehicle for him) to already be established. And I haven't followed it for really long, but most of the team I'm thinking of are mutants, and Spidey characters. General Ross, Electra? But still, after being established I'm all for it. Someone above mentioned a Watcher movie. From what I know about

I don't know what all Marvel has rights to, I'd love to see the galaxy developed like in the new GOTG comic with the brood, gladiator, asguardians, all those species, but i personally don't want a lot of individual space character movies. Maybe a SWORD movie? I also feel like if they get so far to where they are making Wonder Man solo movies, and they are all summer blockbuster films, it's going to put a big dent, and possibly end, the comic book movies. Unfortunately for Marvel, at least in my opinion, the X-Men have way more characters to create more solo and X-Force movies than what Marvel has the rights to. Especially when they don't have Spidey
