Doc Brown shows up in the new TV spot for A Million Ways To Die in the West

05.22.2014

If you are a fan of Seth MacFarlane's animated series FAMILY GUY, AMERICAN DAD, and THE CLEVELAND SHOW, you are fully aware of the random pop culture references and non sequiturs that fill every episode. While MacFarlane's feature debut, TED, had a couple, it wasn't quite as pervasive as it is on the cartoon series. But, we now know of at least one that will pop up in A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST and it is a doozy.

Featured in the latest theatrical trailer, the cameo has now popped up online in the new TV spots for the comedy western. Saved for the end of the video is MacFarlane stumbling up to an old barn that looks very familiar as it glows with some unnatural light. When he opens the door to investigate, he finds Doc Brown from BACK THE FUTURE PART III along with a DeLorean half hidden under a sheet. When asked what the car is, Brown replies "just a weather experiment".

When I saw this for the first time before seeing THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, the crowd exploded with laughter while some of the younger audience members looked confused as to who the white-haired old guy was. If anything, this is a well done nod to the Robert Zemeckis films that is made better by Christopher Lloyd's involvement. Part of me wishes the cameo had been saved for those seeing the movie, but I hope it just serves as a hint of a lot more hilarity in the rest of the movie.

A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST hits theaters on May 30th.

Well until I see the movie for myself and how the whole plot lays out I will just say that as of now with what we've seen in the trailers so far this cameo is not possible.

JoBlo needs some control

Your Headlines are getting a little out of hand with constantly spoiling a movie. Surely this could have been called "Epic Cameo in A Million Ways to Die in the West".

Now thats a shame, really could have done without seeing or hearing about that. How cool that would have been seeing it in the theater.

This is one of the best cameo's I've ever seen, and it does kinda suck it was given away in the trailer. I seem to always have cameo's ruined. The Zombiieland one was ruined for me on this site, and the 21 jump street was ruined by watching the MTV movie awards. X-Men first class was the last time I was actually surprised by a cameo.

That's actually incredible. But putting this in the trailer is like putting the Sam Jones cameo in the trailer of Ted. Yet another example of how trailers show way too much.

This was the final push, I haven't been a fan of his in the past some years and when I saw this surprise cameo in the trailer when I went to see Spidey, that was it. I know he personally doesn't cut the trailers, maybe he does, but doesn't he have some creative control over that or at least should. This was one of the best cameos in a LONG time and it was too much. I warned you all, in the forum with it's own thread.

Spoiler! Even for comedies I hate when cool moments like this are ruined by spoilers

A good cameo but still a pass. Not a big Seth fan. Some American Dad and Family Guy Seasons 1-3 are about all I can stomach.

This would have been perfect to see without it being ruined. I've been fast-forwarding TV spots for this for several weeks to go in fresh and then I come here and it gets ruined in a headline. Ugh.

This was a perfect example of a trailer ruining/showing too much of a movie.

They ruined the biggest laugh of the film

I saw the film last night during a screening. When I saw this in the trailer before Spidey 2, I laughed hard, and then got immediately pissed. I was mad they gave away what was sure to be one of the best cameos in a movie in years. Well, it turns out I was right. If I hadn't seen the trailer, this scene would have gotten the biggest laugh during the whole movie. Since half the theater last night had seen the trailer, there were snickers leading up to the moment, and just a chuckle when it

If I hadn't seen the trailer, this scene would have gotten the biggest laugh during the whole movie. Since half the theater last night had seen the trailer, there were snickers leading up to the moment, and just a chuckle when it happened. Those who didn't see the trailer let out a big laugh, and I felt jealous of them for being able to see it during the actual film!

The movie is decent, but no where nearly as funny as Ted (or Family Guy for that matter). Seth and Charlize have GREAT chemistry together, and their scenes feel completely genuine. But, there is an over-abundance of toilet humor in this film that I just can't begin to enjoy. Leave that humor to the crappy Shrek films! Don't get me wrong, it's an enjoyable movie and has it's moments, but I was just waiting for it to break through and become great. It's definitely not this generation's Blazing Saddles, like many had hoped for!

I saw it last night as well and agree with every single thing you said. This would have been an amazing cameo/surprise, but I was waiting for it the entire time. Definitely a hilarious idea, but it was kinda ruined. And add to the fact that this takes place in Arizona, 1882 and Doc Brown was in California, 1885...

Anyways, yeah, it wasn't a bad film, but it wasn't great either. VERY hit and miss, with more hits than misses (though the hits don't approach any levels of being dubbed

I don't care for MacFarlane's tv shows, but I really enjoyed Ted and this looks like more of the same.

Saw the bit on the TV spot. It was neat, but I wish they hadn't shown it so I could see it for the first time in theaters. I've been avoiding spoilers and even follow-up trailers for movies that I actually want to see in theaters, e.g., X-Men DOFP, but the TV spot spoiled it for me. Hopefully the movie will be funny enough to make me forgive Seth :)
