Leaked script pages have Doctor Strange taking place before The Avengers

Jul. 11, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Comic Con next week should hopefully shed light on what is coming in Phase Three from Marvel because until then we are just speculating and grabbing at every rumor that comes across our plates. While some are more outlandish than others, the ones concerning DOCTOR STRANGE seem to have the most validity to them.

Comic Book Movie is claiming to have gotten their hands on three pages from the screenplay for DOCTOR STRANGE (using the working title EYE SEE YOU). Here is their summary:

"Nick Fury and SHIELD locate a strong power reading from a mountain in Tibet. Another person is in the same room with Fury and also sees a green-like radiation pulsing from the mountain and asks Fury is it's terrestrial. Fury says it is being analyzed but he hasn't seen such a power surge since Bruce Banner had an accident with Gamma Rays. Fury concludes by saying the Black Widow is in the vicinity and will investigate but until she sends a report, SHIELD is not sure what the proper response is at the moment.

"Then, the third page starts with Doctor Strange begin tired and goes to lay down for the night and in the morning is awakened by his trusted partner Wong. Strange is brought some coffee. Strange sits up and has some menial banter with Wong and grabs a newspaper. The first headline on the paper talks about a giant earthquake in New York, while the second headline says that Tony Stark is officially Iron Man. His response to the Stark headline is, 'Lucky bastard.'"

The lead in of hearing about Tony Stark's press conference would set the events prior to IRON MAN which means they could introduce Strange in THE AVENGERS 2 and his standalone would serve as a prequel. This seems a little confusing but we are also basing this off of second hand information. My question is less how the films link and whether or not the script is any good as a whole.

DOCTOR STRANGE is another Marvel character that die hard fans know but the average person may not be familiar with. Assuming these pages are real, Marvel must have a plan in place to bring the character into the fold, especially if they are aiming for him to be a large enough figure to take Robert Downey Jr.'s place as the central figure of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Stay tuned to JoBlo.com next week for news from Comic Con as it develops.

Please no Johnny Depp

I love the guy but damn if he hasn't tried so hard to just constantly be weird, unless he can play a straight character without a silly gimmick

With the success of Harry Potter...

And the abundance of MARVEL adaptations over the past decade, I can't believe a Doctor Strange movie hasn't been made already.

I vote for Jack Houston for Strange. He was up for Guardians at one point. Maybe they had something else in mind.

It would really depend on how they structure the story. It could be like Batman Begins which would take place over years while he travelled the world and eventually settle back in New York or it could be like Constantine, already established in the supernatural world

i think thats not a bad idea. i like the fact that other things were going on prior to the events of Avengers.

Totally down with this idea! Tony Stark became part of a bigger universe when he became Iron Man, he "just (didn't) know it yet" and neither did we. I like to think that Tony wasn't the first "superhero" type case SHIELD had come across since the super soldier program.

Justin Theroux

He brings the talent, the look, the comic timing, he'd be perfect.

Assuming that script excerpt is even real - how does only 3 pages of a script get leaked these days? It's all or nothing with digital files - it's more likely that this film just covers a lot of ground time-wise. Maybe it just takes Strange a long time to realize his potential, so that chose to give that path of discovery a backdrop of the Marvel highlight reel. Why not? This stuff can't happen in a vacuum. And if you need a story where "X years pass", you're gonna fuck things up with the

When I read "earthquake in New York", I immediately assumed that was the how the Hulk/Abomination fight was reported (despite billions of witnesses to the incident) but then Hulk was set some time after Iron Man 2 as Stark had officially joined the Avengers Initiative (going by the end credits teaser). So something else is being hinted at here...if this is all true.

Incidentally, if this is true, the Hulk/Abomination fight, a Chitari invasion...and an earth quake that happened before these two events...poor old New York! If Jackman got his wish and Spider-man and Wolverine were thrown in to the mix...you'd also have to add a biological disaster that nearly had it raining lizards! Poor old New York indeed.

I think you have some of your timing wrong in this post. The Incredible Hulk movie would have been happening at the same time or at least shortly after Iron Man 1 not 2. Nothing in the end credits teaser hints that it would be after IM2, as at the end of IM2 Stark is kicked out of the Avengers Initiative. That being said, I think you're assumption about the earthquake in New York could be the Hulk/Abomination fight could be right.

The way I saw it...was that...Fury "only" approached Stark at the end of Iron Man 1. Widow assessed him in part 2 and deemed him not worthy (words he mocked in the Avengers movie). So I assumed he became worthy sometime after Iron Man 2. The end credits I referred too (apologies - see the confusion) was the one at the end of Hulk when he meets up with Ross...asking him about the Avengers Initiative which means he is now part of it.

Now that I think about it, perhaps I'm wrong...wasn't

Now that I think about it, perhaps I'm wrong...wasn't there a scene in Iron Man 2 showing the footage from the Hulk/campus scene in the background or is my fan boy mind pi$$ing with me now and making $hit up. Either way, shame WB don't play such games with us in their movies.

That excerpt alone sounds pretty interesting. I actually like it that, if it's true, that Dr. Strange takes place before Avengers. I can't imagine an actor for Strange yet.

meh

i wouldnt bet on it taking place out of sync with the rest of the films. This is still an early draft, or it could also be a flashback or prologue.

What got me was that the news of Tony Stark as Iron Man made second page behind a New York earthquake. It isn't unheard of for the city to have earthquakes so it would have to be something substantial to overshadow a real life superhero

I'm betting the "Earthquake" is a cover story for HULK's showdown with Abomination in Harlem.

It couldn't be a cover story for the Hulk vs Abomination fight because that takes place during Iron Man 2 which is well after his press conference admitting he's Iron Man.

yeah, your probably right. im sure they would try to cover that up directly after the events of the movie. But how they talked in The Avengers seems like they didnt do a good job of the cover up

Unless this hints that these pages are an after credits scene. Where we see SHIELD bring in Strange after his stand alone movie.

Hello...

just because the first three pages are set pre-Avengers assembled, doesn't mean the whole film is. the good dr. could get sucked into something strange at this "radiation pulse" and re-emerge later in the time stream or the story could just skip ahead to modern times after the shield investigation or any number of things. Cap started in WWII, remember? not a stretch that this isn't a full on prequel. (also, hulk and strange go hand-in-hand... the defenders will replace the avengers after their

Here is a real shot in the dark. How about Christian Bale? Doctor Strange unlike Tony Stark has always been a man with a serious demeanor. His cold hard logic hardened his realizations that the world has little defense against the powers that lurk beyond human recognition. As a result he often always has this seriousness that snaps many to attention. I think Bale has shown in the past that he knows how to give off this seriousness. Its also not completely unfamiliar territory due to his past

Nope. Don't know him and don't really care, but I felt the same way about IronMan until the first movie came out.
