Doctor Strange teaser only offered a small hint at how crazy the film gets
A week ago the first teaser trailer for Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE was released and we finally got a good look at the Sorcerer Supreme in action. The upcoming film will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions. Aside from a few mind-bendy moments, the teaser was more focused on introducing us to the title character and how he finds himself thrust into the world of magic. Some were a little disappointed that there wasn't more sequences dealing with magic, but while speaking on The Sunday Service podcast, DOCTOR STRANGE co-writer C. Robert Cargill discussed the DOCTOR STRANGE teaser trailer and how it's really only the tip of the iceberg for the craziness that the film has in store for us.
This teaser is, it’s the definition of a teaser. You are only getting a like a small taste of just how crazy this movie gets. We have only just the slightest hints of magic in there. There are major characters you don’t even glimpse in that trailer, there's so much stuff going on, that this thing is just nutty, the stuff they let us do, I can’t believe they let us do it. I would be in meetings where Kevin Feige and our other producers would be "how can we make this crazier?" And I was like "alright, lets play around" and it's a hell of an experience.
Cargill didn't get to see the DOCTOR STRANGE trailer beforehand, he watched it on Jimmy Kimmel with everyone else, so he had no idea what it would consist of. He wound up being very pleased that it focused on setting up the myth of Doctor Strange without revealing too much of the "bonkers stuff" they have in store.
Anyone who watches that trailer and goes "oh, I think I know the basic direction the story is going" has NO idea how crazy it's going to get. This movie, we got some really bonkers stuff in here, in the best way, like in the way that Doctor Strange is bonkers. You can't be a Doctor Strange fan without ever uttering the word "Ditko", and the [Steve] Ditko stuff is very much what influenced the design department on this.
As principal photography on DOCTOR STRANGE wrapped less than a month ago, I'd imagine that the next trailer we get will be filled with a little more of that magical craziness we've been promised. Directed by Scott Derrickson, DOCTOR STRANGE is set for a November 4, 2016 release.
