Dodgeball! Sequel to the Ben Stiller/Vince Vaughn comedy moves forward

Apr. 22, 2013by:

Don't get too excited just yet, but the word from THR is that screenwriter Clay Tarver (JOYRIDE) has been hired to pen a sequel to the 2004 comedy hit, DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY, which starred Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn. Story details are under wraps, but the script is said to have "Vaughn and Stiller forced to team up to fight an even bigger threat," which sounds like a perfectly plausible direction to go.

I had a blast with DODGEBALL and feel it's one of the few comedies where everyone's character worked. It was nice to see Stiller play against type as well, playing the not-so-bright villain and leader of the GloboGym Purple Cobras vs. Vaughn's team of misfit Average Joes. It's one of those comedies you can settle into anytime.

No word on whether original director Marshall Rawson Thurber would be involved, but since Stiller's Red Hour is teaming up with Fox on the sequel you can at least wager that Stiller is onboard. Hopefully, they can get the whole gang back together as it was a terrific cast to begin with. Well, except Lance Armstrong.

More as this develops.

Extra Tidbit: My pick for the leader of the new villain? Danny McBride of course! What say you?

Justin Long ;( he was so young

Justin Long was my favorite actor back in those days... I know, but come on. This movie made his career and he was the true underdog in the movie. I really hope he is the focus of this sequel and they bring him back. The writer for this is very underwhelming. While I really enjoyed Joy Ride, the sequel sucked and so did the other 3 movies he wrote.

ESPN: The Ocho. My friends and I still use that joke today. Hell, Dodgeball even made Lance Armstrong funny.
I'm conflicted cause I think most of these guys are past their prime but the movie is really ripe for a sequel. I'm definitely going to see it no matter what.

I love this movie. Does it need a sequel? Probably not. Will the sequel be subpar? Probably so. But I'm sure it will provide plenty of laughs. White Goodman is in my top 10 movie characters

I enjoyed the first Dodgeball because it was fresh at the time it came out, comedy sequels tend to be hit or miss, unless they are fabricated to warrant a sequel. If any Stiller movie has that distinction, it's Zoolander, much like Anchorman for Will Ferrell.

Awesome

One of the better Stiller movies. Sounds great if they can get everyone back.

While I would certainly see a sequel, I think if any Stiller film deserves a sequel it would be Zoolander. Sad that didn't happen. Heck, I'd prefer a Tropic Thunder sequel instead of Dodgeball.

"Stiller's team of misfit Average Joes."

You mean Vaughn's* team of misfit Average Joes right?
Either way. This sounds great.

Proofread.

Yes!

Most people who loved this have been waiting for this news ( same with zoolander, super troopers, beerfest, step brothers and so many others) since they first saw dodgeball! I would love to see Danny Mcbride take the roll of the villian in this one

Skeptical, but hopeful...

I am all for this movie being good (because I'm not a cynical monster), but I worry that this will suffer from the same repetitive problems that other comedy sequels have in the past. The Austin Powers movies were the carrier of this terrible joke cloning disease and the Hangover series is one of the more recent victims.

This should have happened years ago

About time. Although I'm thinking they should make it the Shaolin Soccer of dodgeball. Also, Tom Cruise as the epic bad guy dodgeball player.

That's great casting! Cruise would be terrific in a comedic villain role like this.

Loved the first one and would be excited as hell to see a sequel with all of the characters coming back. The original is a comedy classic.
