Does Universal want Dwayne Johnson to be their Wolf Man?

06.22.2016

Dwayne Johnson The Wolf Man

There are people who like keeping busy and there are people who really like keeping busy, and then there's Dwayne Johnson. The charismatic actor is attached to so many projects that you wonder just when he finds the time to eat or sleep, and buried within a report from Deadline that Johnson will be producing an adaptation of upcoming graphic novel "Son Of Shaolin" comes another possible project.

The outlet says that there are "persistent rumors Universal wants him howling at the moon when it gets around to the Wolf Man movie that is part of its classic monsters franchise revival plans." Take this with a grain of salt for now, but given that Universal seems to want to populate their Universal Monster films with A-listers (Tom Cruise in THE MUMMY, Johnny Depp in THE INVISIBLE MAN, and possibly Angelina Jolie in BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN) it's not completely out of the blue that they'd want to approach Dwayne Johnson. He'd certainly make for an imposing Wolf Man if that's the direction they're going. Meanwhile, Johnson is filming FAST 8 and has a variety of projects on the horizon including MOANA, BAYWATCH, SHAZAM, DOC SAVAGE, JUMANJI, RAMPAGE, as well as sequels to JOURNEY and SAN ANDREAS. As for myself, I'm starting to seriously think about reorganizing my Blu-ray shelves.

How do you feel about Dwayne Johnson potentially becoming a part of the Universal Monsters franchise?

Based on what we got with Dracula Untold, can't say I'm completely confident in this shared movie universe. These movies are meant to be scary, not action blockbusters. The only thing in excited about is the possibility of Jolie playing the Bride of Frankenstein.

It would certainly be a different take on the character. I always picture the guy who becomes a werewolf to be, initially, the less intimidating type of person, that way the change has greater significance. You can imagine Johnson punching out a werewolf as he is, moreso than the horror of succumbing to the curse.
Still, though he's got more levels to some of his performances than a lot of action stars, I'm not totally sure an action star would be the way to go with this sort of character -

I'd rather see The Rock become President than play a Wolf Man.

Que Saturday Night Live's Franchise Viagra sung by The Rock. As for the movie, it could work. The Rock has always been very likable in all of his movies.

Call me a pessimist, but I dont think the Monsters Shared Universe is going to work

Universal should really just focus on that Mummy movie with Tom Cruise before committing to expanding this whole idea into a shared universe. This thing is going to take work if its going to succeed and they cannot afford even one bad movie. I do not believe that Monsters can match the box office appeal of Super Heroes so its going to require seriously high quality films.

They've already had a bad movie. Dracula completely sucked. They might succeed with the Mummy movie, but I don't have any hope for the others (and this Superfriends idea is idiotic).
