Last month we brought you word that Doug Liman was being courted by Fox to directing its planned GAMBIT movie starring Channing Tatum as the Ragin' Cajun and Lea Seydoux as Bella Donna Boudreaux, and now THR is reporting that the EDGE OF TOMORROW and THE BOURNE IDENTITY director is in final negotiations to helm the X-Men spinoff. If Liman does officially sign on, he'll be taking over for Rupert Wyatt, who exited the project in August due to a scheduling conflict (or creative differences, depending on who you ask).

Liman wasn't the only filmmaker in the running for GAMBIT though; the site claims Joe Cornish, Shane Black and F. Gary Gray were also in the mix to helm the comic book movie.

While Liman might be close to reaching a deal to direct GAMBIT, what's not clear is if the film will be able to hit its scheduled 2016 release date. Fox and company still need to finish casting for the movie, and then they have to shoot the sucker, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's an announcement that it will be hitting theaters a little later than originally planned.

GAMBIT is currently set to open on October 7, 2016.
