Doug Liman to direct Splinter Cell starring Tom Hardy

Mar. 19, 2014by: Niki Stephens

The SPLINTER CELL adaptation has finally found a director.

Doug Liman is in final talks to helm the video game flick for Ubisoft and New Regency. Tom Hardy has been attached to star since 2012. The film has been slowly coming along after being passed through Dreamworks and Paramount. Peter Berg was on at one point to helm until he moved on to other things.

SPLINTER CELL is a single player stealth game based on the novels of Tom Clancy. The story centers on

Sam Fisher, a spy for a secret government organization called Third Echelon which fights terrorists. Actor Michael Ironside voiced the character throughout five games until 2013 when Eric Johnson replaced him.

Liman is a nice choice for a flick like this. Hes been doing steady work in the action genre since 2002s THE BOURNE IDENTITY. Next up for the director is the release of sci-fi-action flick EDGE OF TOMORROW starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

Eric Singer (AMERICAN HUSTLE, THE INTERNATIONAL) penned the script.

Great news! I know video games to movies doesn't have the best track record, but I think adapting something as cinematic as Splinter Cell could actually be successful. The plot is already there and with a great lead like Tom Hardy and good director with Liman this has a shot.

Sold. All I want is one long sequence with Hardy moving down a dark hallway and that light bobbing around.

This can't get here soon enough

Love this combo! Although, Peter Berg woulda done some serious justice to it as well (The Kingdom, Lone Survivor...he's a Michael Mann protege...

You're saying that the guy who birthed the Bourne franchise is doing Splinter Cell, and Tom Hardy is in it???? I'M SO IN!!!!! This is coming from a guy who has given up hope on video game movies.

Doug Liman is a good director. Love The Bourne Identity and Go. Have watched both multiple times and Edge of Tomorrow looks amazing as well.

Him and Hardy should make this a good ten dollars and two hours well spent at the movies.

Good choices for the movie. Liman isn't always a win, but more often than not he delivers. Tom Hardy is certainly an interesting choice, but I think that the character will be different in his hands. He doesn't come off as the gruff, veteran military op. that Sam Fischer is in the games.

The game came before the book.

But either way, I'm stoked to finally see a movie come to fruition. I remember on Pandora Tomorrow (I think) it had a teaser trailer for Splinter Cell: The Movie. Finally we get it.

Also, I could see it working as an HBO or Cinemax series, each mission would be an episode or so

The director and lead actor choices makes perfect sense. It has the Tom Clancy brand in its name, after all. Also since much of the games are quite grounded in reality, the adaptation is less likely to go over budget like the Bioshock movie that didn't get made.

Or the Halo movie! I remember hearing about the supposed $800 million budget that Peter Jackson said he would need.

I love everything about this.

One thing that sets the games apart from your average spy thriller is that Sam Fisher is older, so I would have loved to see someone like Clooney in the role. That said, Hardy is an amazing actor, and casting someone younger will allow for a longer franchise life if the plan is to go that route.

I've been a huge splinter cell fan for years! And I'm excited about both Hardy and Liman being attached to the movie. I can't wait for tons of gadgets, night vision, and methodical action!
