Downey is Sherlock!

07.10.2008
What's up, Holmes? Robert Downey Jr., that's what.

Downey will star as the titular sleuth in Guy Ritchie's SHERLOCK HOLMES movie. The Warner Bros. project is, obviously, the latest version of Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective. This probably won't come as a surprise, but Ritchie's version will incorporate plenty of fisticuffs among the deductive reasoning (plus plenty of characters with descriptive names, no doubt). Should be interesting to see who they land for Watson and Moriarty.

Downey has also recently been pursued to play Hugh Hefner, mystery novel detective Travis McGee, and a random Old West cowboy fighting aliens, but clearly he couldn't resist a paid opportunity to wear a deerstalker cap. Who could? That's just elementary.

SHERLOCK will be Downey's next project which, coupled with Marvel's noted lack of commitment in securing director Jon Favreau for a sequel, leaves Tony Stark fans pondering the likelihood of seeing IRON MAN 2 on the already-announced May 2010 release date.
Extra Tidbit: Downey's SHERLOCK races against the recently announced HOLMES comedy with Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell.

theshadowalker: I kind of understand what you are saying about being "Americanized" but still don't quite get it. I guess I just dont understand what that has got to do with America. But anyways.

The new Robinhood coming out where he is the bad guy is just a 'What if' scenerio IMO. Its just a new, different take on the character. It's not like its the first ever Robinhood movie and so they are screwing it up from day one. We have had several other great interpretations.

Just so you know

Just so you know on IMDB you're right, there were tons, I was just listing the last theatrical films I saw on there.

Anyways, we dont know anything about plot or story or charcter so how can you be so sure that Guy Richie is going to fuck this up? Is it REALLY fair for you to already compare this to Batman and Robin, not only the worst ever interpretation of Batman but also a horrific movie in general? Guy Richie is a good director, he's already proven that twice. RDJ has proven he can act more times than I can count so what exactly are you basing this hatred for this version on? Thanks for the tip on what is good to watch to get familiar with the character. Im gonna check that out.

RE: jaybro7

Sigh. I knew that someone, eventually, would misinterpret 'Americanized' as meaning 'American'.

That is, I'm talking about sensibilities...not accents.

Because, yes, Sherlock Holmes as a Tough Guy and Robin Hood as a Bad Guy are very Americanized interpretations of these characters...even if the people making them are, in fact, British.

And if, by your own admission, you're not overly familiar with the character, then why would you want to be introduced to a bastardized version of

And if, by your own admission, you're not overly familiar with the character, then why would you want to be introduced to a bastardized version of him? That's like taking someone who's not familiar with Batman, and introducing them to the character by showing them Schumacher's 'Batman & Robin'.

As for your search of IMDB? I don't think a year's gone by for, well, decades where there HASN'T been a Holmes adaptation (although, not necessarily on the Big Screen). But try watching Jeremy Brett's interpretation in the series 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'. That's about as definitive as you'll ever get. (But try to get the DVDs from the 'Complete' collection that was released in '07...as prior releases were, at best, shockingly poor transfers.)

Not so sure about this...

Love Downey but not sure if he is right for the part. Maybe Jude Law? As long as Holmes boxes, fences and does blow I will be happy.

Miscast

I like Downey a lot but it seems, after Iron Man, he is a tad overrated. He is no Sherlock. He is good in other types of roles.

I gotta say i'm incredibly worried about this one. Robert Downey JR. is great but man he's like Owen Wilson. He kidna does the same thing over and over but we love him for it you know? Or at least in recent days i mean if you can tell any other differences between Tony Stark and Harry Lockhart out of kiss kiss bang besides the moustache then i'd like to hear it frankly...
Just one mans' opinion though. Either way i do agree with Claire Quilty. I hope they're not doign it jsut cause he's the IT

Just one mans' opinion though. Either way i do agree with Claire Quilty. I hope they're not doign it jsut cause he's the IT actor and also guy ritchie has two movies out of an entire crap fest. Out of those two movies i only liked lock stock anyways but i mean i don't think that qualifies him to direct this. There was no real vision in those stories and he also seems to eb a one trick pony in London Gangster movies so combing him with a rather intellectual detective is a bad idea.

I'm still excited to see what they come out with. I just hope they don't screw it up.

Theshadowalker: Americanized?? Last time I checked Guy Richie was British. There are tons of Brits and Aussies who change their accents to play American characters all the time in award winning films. Whats wrong with a good actor like Downy Jr playing Sherlock Holmes?? Also, whoever said Richie was a hack needs to go see Lock Stock and Snatch. Sorry but he aint no hack. He's already proven himself with those two movies. Okay so he has made a stinker Swept Away and hes kinda stupid for being

Besides that guys, but I went onto IMDB and when the HELL was the last time a Sherlock Holmes movie was in theaters?? The latest thing I found was in 1979 with Christopher Plummer in the role and a spoof starring Gene Wilder about Sherlock's smarter older brother. I mean come on!! Seriously isn't this character due for the big screen? so people like me who have NEVER explored the character as much as they'd like to can get a nice introduction?

I think he'll do great as Holmes, but I really think they should get Hugh Laurie as Watson.

Wow, people are actually getting more upset about Darren Aronofsky remaking RoboCop than they are about Guy Ritchie reimagining Sherlock Holmes?

I hope Robert Downey Jr. isn't being hired because he's the "IT" actor right now. In any case, he'll probably deliver something fun. I'm really bummed out about Guy Ritchie though -- that dude is an awful filmmaker, and hasn't the elegance or intellect to make a good adaptation of a Sherlock Holmes adventure.

WTF?

Is this a comedy (like 'Without a Clue')...or a modernization (like 'Zero Effect')...or what?

Because, otherwise, I'd argue that Holmes is fine as is, thank you very much. He doesn't need to be reimagined or reinvented or rewhatevered.

And why, all of a sudden, are we getting such pointlessly obvious, Americanized reimaginings of such uniquely British figures? Sherlock Holmes as a Tough Guy? Robin Hood as a Bad Guy?

**** this.

Basically, if you HAVE to make a new Holmes movie,

Basically, if you HAVE to make a new Holmes movie, then do so (although Jeremy Brett's Holmes, like Michael Praed's Robin Hood, is going to be a difficult, if not impossible, act to follow); but don't change Holmes himself.
