Downey on Iron recast

Nov. 6, 2008by:

Robert Downey Jr had a couple of comments about the now infamous recasting of Terrence Howard's Jim Rhodes character from this summer's IRON MAN. Don Cheadle replaced him, after allegedly delivering an unsatisfactory performance and for carrying too high a price-tag. Neither director Jon Favreau or Downey Jr had commented on this development until now. Downey said:

"I had nothing to do with that decision. I love Terrence very very much. Thats all Ill say because I havent talked to him yet... Ive always admired Don [Cheadle]. Its one of those situations where I still dont quite know what happened or why. Heres what happens too: things happen and you wind up commenting on them before youve actually talked to the people and its in poor taste."

I've been reading a lot of what's said about this whole thing and am I really the only person who thinks this is a good move? Howard is a great actor but his Rhodes is too soft. The voice is all wrong. He needs to be bad ass and commanding, like me, or Rambo.
Extra Tidbit: While he made MISSION TO MARS, Cheadle slept on the actual film set to ensure he was as in character as possible.

Howards a damn good actor and recasting him is weak sauce and unnecessary. he was one of the best things bout the first(and pretty overated yet entertaining) movie. Favreau should get the boot, hes a decent director but the action in the first one was weak and someone more capable shoulda stepped up for the next one

HOLY SHIT

WOW, Cheadle actually slept during the filming of that Mars movies. What incredible dedication. To actually fall asleep in order to better inhabit the character you're getting hundreds of thousands of dollars to portray. That is really intense. Much better than the starving the Bale went through for his role.

Or even more intesne than the training astronauts go through to not get themselves killed during their job.

HE FELL ASLEEP...WOW.

Kidding though, Cheadle is great.

The casting change of Howard to Cheadle to Iron Man is on a whole other level than Ghyllenhall for Holmes in the Batman movies. PLEASE STOP MAKING THAT COMPARISON.

That soft voice you speak of is part of the reason I liked Howard so much. The guy was cool as a cucumber. He'll never have his chance to get all bad-ass now and I'm bummed.

I love both of them (maybe Cheadle a bit more) but I think that Howard fits the role more. I dont think he was bad at all as Rhodes, and I would have much rather had him in the new one instead.

And do you really think Don Cheadle will come off more badass than Terrence Howard? I doubt it ...

I said it before and I'll say it again, Don Cheadle rules but recasting sucks. The recasting is the only thing that bothered me in TDK was the recast; the part ask the viewer to already be invested in the character and although Gyllenhall did well, the "new" aspect did hurt during her big emotionnal scene!

I've been on and off the fence regarding the re-cast, but after re-watching IRON MAN again I'm starting to agree with folks who say Howard was too soft. I'm starting to grow on Cheadle in the role now but the continuity thing bugs me. I'm sure I'll get over it, though.

I give RDJ major props for that comment. Very well put.

I respect what Downey said in the article above and thought that what he said was true. I mean Howard is a good actor, but in all honesty I didn't think he was that bad in "Iron Man".

I don't really mind the casting change since I think Cheadle is a much better actor then Howard. The casting change in "The Dark Knight" didn't bother me, so why would this?

I respect Favreau's decision not to bring Howard back due to Favreau not liking Howard's performance. Why bother paying Howard

I'm looking forward to seeing Cheadle in Iron Man 2 and hopefully the casting change pays off in the end.

About Cheadle's Height

I agree with BigShime that height really shouldn't matter but will add this: when Robert Downey Jr. was cast, there seemed to be some concern about his small(ish) stature and how it would fit compared to the comic version. Obviously, he turned out to be an inspired choice for the role. Now, with a second try after Howard, Marvel casts another actor who some complain is to small for the role. Anyone care to argue that Cheadle will be bad in the role? He certainly is a talented actor. Based

That said, I really think it would fit the character of Tony Stark if he made a comment on Rhodes transformation; Maybe something as simple as "Hey, Rhodey, you look different; did you do something with you hair?" It should be better than that, but the relationship Stark has with Rhodes would befit a comment on how he looks different. I wish other films would do this, especially those that already have a light enough tone, which permits poking fun at itself. This one does.

I totally agree with that change. I would have like for Howard to stay for continuity but he did not act like an Air Force pilot.

I've been in the USAF for nearly 8 years and have met many pilots. In fact am stationed at an F-16 training base and I see many fighter pilots. Almost all of them are cocky SOBs. I don't think Howard played that effective enough but Cheadle will be more believable in the role.
If you want to see how a lot of AF pilots act read the comics at

And to all you naysayers about Cheadle being too small to be a superhero... WAR MACHINE WEARS ARMOR. Does it matter how small he is? Look at Robocop. Skinny tiny dude played him = looks good in the armor.

I've loved this recasting ever since I heard about it. Howard just didn't do it for me, and Cheadle is God in my opinion. So it all works out in the end. Downey doesn't seem too disappointed either.
