Downey out, Burrell in Dreamwork's Mr Peabody and Sherman

Mar. 16, 2012by: Alex Maidy

Ty Burrell, star of MODERN FAMILY, will be portraying the canine title character in Dreamworks Animation's upcoming MR. PEABODY AND SHERMAN.

Just last year it was reported that Robery Downey Jr. would be portraying the genius dog, Mr. Peabody, for LION KING director Rob Minkoff.  Obviously RDJ is in very high demand for multiple franchises, so a replacement would have to be found.

MR PEABODY AND SHERMAN will be based on the Jay Ward cartoon that was featured on the old Rocky and Bullwinkle show.  The setup is that Mr. Peabody, the world’s smartest creature, and his pet boy, Sherman, use their time-travelling WABAC machine to explore history and inadvertently cause chaos in the space time continuum.

Burrell is currently starring in one of the top rated shows on television, but has also made appearances in THE INCREDIBLE HULK and Zack Snyder's DAWN OF THE DEAD.  He is a funny guy and perfectly tailored for this type of role.

MR. PEABODY AND SHERMAN is already set for release on March 14, 2014.

Downey was good, so is Burrell

These animated movies are always in production so long that the voice talent often has to be replaced. It kind of makes the whole process tainted if you ask me, they shouldn't announce the actors until they actually start recording the dialogue. But aside from that, Burrell has fine vocal chops, soI can see him succeeding in this role. This comes out the same year as HTTYD 2, so it should be an interesting year for Dreamworks. Before then, they've got others coming out too, Guardians and Turbo

Anyway, I have a feeling some of these will become way more interesting once we learn more about them.

Too bad they didn't go after someone like Patrick Stewart for Mr. Peabody's voice. I've always thought of Ty Burrell to be a poor man's Bruce Campbell....in looks only, considering Campbell can actually act circles around this guy.

Interest in this has mysteriously vanished with him

Somebody hitch a ride on the way-back machine and fix this!
